Fans impressed with Oxford City signing an experienced EFL player

Fans have been left impressed with Oxford City who have managed to capture the signing of an experienced and much loved EFL player.

The National League South side have managed to get a deal over the line, and that man is midfielder Alfie Potter, who most recently left Billericay Town, a team from the same league.

He came through the youth team ranks at Peterborough United after being released by Wimbledon at the age of 14, then by Millwall aged 17. Before joining Peterborough he spent a few months at the Barking Abbey Centre for Football Excellence, where he made several first-team appearances for Waltham Forest in the Isthmian League. He then signed his first professional contract with Peterborough on the 1st of June 2007, signing a one-year deal.

He joined Norwegian 4th tier club Kvinesdal on loan in the summer of 2007, but failed to make any appearances. In September 2007 he had a month’s loan spell at Grays Athletic, making just one appearance, coming on as a substitute against Exeter City.

In November 2007 he made a loan move to National League South side Havant & Waterlooville, for the rest of the season and then his career got better form there on.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Oxford City are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Alfie Potter for the 2020/21 season.

Alfie is certainly no stranger to Oxford as he spent six seasons at near neighbours Oxford United, making 194 appearances for the U’s, scoring 28 goals in the process. His first season saw him earn promotion from the Conference Premier back into League Two, [his last-minute goal at Wembley Stadium securing Oxford’s return to the Football League after a four-year exile].

He would have further spells in the Football League with AFC Wimbledon before moving onto Northampton Town and Mansfield Town, before signing for City’s league rivals Billericay Town in 2017/18, where he has remained until this season.

Potter initially made his name for another of City’s league rivals, Havant & Waterlooville, as he was part of the side that lead twice at Anfield against Liverpool, even scoring the second goal for the Hawks, earning himself the Player of the Round award for the Third Round.

Alfie joins straight up with the side and will be available to play on Saturday afternoon against Dulwich Hamlet.

We’re delighted that Alfie will be sponsored by the Road Transport Consultancy Ltd for this coming season. Statement ends.

As well as winning promotion with Oxford, what also earned him a fan favourite status was coming off the bench to score an 88th-minute winner against local rivals Swindon Town in a first-round Football League Trophy match.

He also reunited with ex-U’s boss Chris Wilder, at Northampton and was part of their team who went on to win promotion to League One.

Former Oxford United player and caretaker David Oldfield was appointed manager of Oxford City in March 2020 and has had an impressive spell with them so far.

The National League suspended the 2019/20 season, then the final league standing was based on PPG (points-per-game), placing them 13th.

Oldfield was appointed for the following season which began October 2020 and his side now sit 9th in the National League South, a point behind the playoffs.

They also got to the Second Round of the FA Cup, looking the far better team when knocking out lifeless Northampton Town before losing 1-0 at Shrewsbury.

The club really does look like they could be on the up, signings are looking great and they might just reach the fifth tier of English football for the first time in their history.
