Fans hit out at ‘blatant cheating’ from Bruno Fernandes in Man Utd’s defeat to Fulham

Fans hit out at ‘blatant cheating’ from Bruno Fernandes in Man Utd’s 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham, their first at Old Trafford in 21 years.

The 20 second clip which focuses solely on Fernandes, sees Man Utd go on the attack, Fernandes receives a pass from Scott McTominay, and Fernandes smashes an effort from outside the box, it was parried away from keeper Bernd Leno, nothing comes of that chance for United.

But after his effort, Fernandes flings himself to ground, clutching his ankle in a nothing incident, tries to get the referee’s attention by waving his arms about in complaint, referee lets play continue, showing Fernandes the hand, Fernandes continues rolling about before watching to see what his teammates were doing with the ball, and quickly rises to his feet just as the ball comes within close proximity so Fernandes can have another chance at goal.

Bruno was also seen after the game complaining to the referee, but was once again ignored.

As mentioned, it was Fulham’s first Premier League win at Man Utd in 21 years; Calvin Bassey opened scoring before Harry Maguire netted late leveller; Alex Iwobi hit a 97th-minute winner to leave Man Utd eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Player ratings (per Sky Sports)

Man Utd: Onana (6), Dalot (6), Varane (5), Maguire (6), Lindelof (6), Mainoo (6), Casemiro (6), Forson (6), Fernandes (6), Garnacho (7), Rashford (6).

Subs: Eriksen (6), McTominay (6), Diallo (6), Antony (n/a).

Fulham: Leno (7), Castagne (6), Tosin (7), Bassey (7), Robinson (6), Reed (6), Lukic (6), Wilson (6), Pereira (7), Iwobi (8), Muniz (8).

Subs: Cairney (7), Traore (7), Diop (n/a).

Player of the match: Alex Iwobi

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag said: “We showed big character by fighting back and then we had opportunities to win the game.

“We let them escape because one player takes the wrong position. Don’t let them escape from a throw-in in the corner.

“Fulham are a good team but we could have pressed better. After we found out how to manage that I think we got better in the game. We had very good chances.

“They had chances as well but, during the first half, I had the idea we got better and better. We had a slow start in the second half and we lost Casemiro, which cost us the goal.

“We had strong belief. We went for the win. That is the character from this team and that is great to see.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva said: “It’s a great feeling. We were the better team, clearly, from the first minute until the last. We controlled the game in our way.

“After our goal the crowd started to push them and it was a little bit unlucky the way we conceded the goal. Normally, the player would be in an offside position.

“But you must always believe you can go for a second. It was really a Premier League game after the 1-1 – a little bit crazy.

“Our players showed the mentality to go again. Great moment from Adama and a really composed finish from Iwobi.”

Fans hit out at ‘blatant cheating’ from Bruno Fernandes in Man Utd’s defeat to Fulham…

@BreadCrusader: Players like this, make refereeing the game neigh on impossible. This stuff needs calling out every week by pundits, regardless of who it is or what club they play for.

@Omri_Fligel: As a united fan. Its a shame and its really not for the first time

@Gidge11: Thats the thing, this isnt a one off.

@a_j_birds: If ever the premier league needed to give a retrospective card, this is it. Clearly not been touched, trying to deceive the officials to gain an advantage, look@how quickly he moved when he thought there’s a chance he might get the ball back.

@Super__City: Wish we had retrospective bans for diving and cheating

@Cokeeffe1: Imagine ur captain feigning injury while his team are chasing a late goal in front of 75,000 fans. United will continue to be a laughing stock as long as this fella is captain of the club.

@ianrow29: This is where VAR could really be put to good use. Football just seems unwilling to grasp the nettle with this sort of stuff. Worst thing about the game. Too many up to this sort of thing now. Disgraceful.

@JoeyD999: Most dislikable player in the Prem

@bevmitchell2801: Sadly, he’s far from alone in engaging in embarrassing antics like this. Refs need to start cracking down on it. It’s a bookable offence if a player “attempts to deceive the referee eg by feigning injury or by pretending to have been fouled (simulation)”.

@nffc_evans: Should be booked for that. Simulation used to attract a yellow & VAR should be able to intervene and bring some integrity back to the game.

@d_p_ball: Got to start dealing with this retrospectively. What more evidence is needed of blatant cheating

@GoogleDebs: Time the FA cracked down on this play acting stance. Absolutely ridiculous gamesmanship

@markgooner73uk: Because he is pathetic. How is he a captain! Terrible player, terrible captain, terrible cheat!

@Peterhoest: Players like Bruno Fernandes are ruining so much for so many. This is cheating and his behavior is a disgrace.

@NCSL1892: ….meanwhile in the land of CHEATING! If ever you are asked what a scam or a cheat looks like then maybe use this clip. This is disgusting & shows unbiased people the character of a player. The guilt is in trying to stop the game then the manner in which he got back up 🙈🤦‍♂️#NUFC

@AVFCMarkM: He needs banning, horrible, dirty, flea ridden rat of a cheat. 🤮🐀

@Marshall96Scott: There’s kids watching this grown man and thinking he’s an example in the game. He’s an absolute embarrassment to the sport. 🐀

@scottyfroggatt: Always said it and will always stick by it. He’s an absolute rat when it comes to playing ball. Young players will look up to him and think it’s okay to cheat and roll around the floor. It’s truly pathetic 😴

@Tnewton_1988: I’ve never been an advocate of injuring someone! But this little weasel needs to be taken out and not on a date! His constant chasing of referees is abhorrent. He is meant to captain of the biggest team in World! Some role model he is to children! Absolutely tosspot!

@Smythers_9: Embarrassing, hes a grown man ffs. This is the kind of ‘incident’ that retrospective bans should be given out for.

@PerryBrownF1: Not just disappointed this is a Man Utd player, but the CAPTAIN of the team, shameful!

@mozzerjnr: Players like this are what ruins the game! Horrible cheating cunt! Time the @FA starter dealing with it and issuing bans

@TheSteakBake: People ask me why I dislike Bruno Fernandes so much. This. This is why. and before you come at me with “Lots of players do it”, Not like this. He is the worst in the league for it by far. Plus, when they are losing, he loses his head and goes and kicks a few people. Child.
