Fans baffled with Liverpool to re-sign 33 year old Jay Spearing from Tranmere

Fans have been left a little baffled this Friday with Liverpool to re-sign 33 year old Jay Spearing from Tranmere Rovers.

The Reds are said to be close to bringing the ex-Kop midfielder back to play in their Under 21s side and then potentially look coaching.

Spearing, who left the League Two outfit this summer, is expected to return to Liverpool’s academy in an innovative development role initiated by youth director Alex Inglethorpe.

As well as offering invaluable experience to those on the cusp of breaking into Liverpool’s first team squad, Spearing – who himself is a former Liverpool U18s skipper – will player with the young players while assisting in coaching some the younger age groups in a dual role.

Spearing left Merseysiders in 2013 having made a total of 55 first team appearances and has challenged himself to launch a coaching career while continuing to play in the lower leagues in recent years, featuring regularly at the Kirkby academy.

Liverpool are the latest of several Premier League clubs taking advantage of recruiting pro players coming to the end of their playing career who can help the next generation come through.

Speaking about Spearing’s return, Academy manager Alex Inglethorpe told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s fantastic to welcome Jay back to the Academy and he will work with the U18s as a full-time coach.

“Jay will work with Bridgey and Tim and he will be actively involved on the training field with our young players.

“He will also be eligible to play for the U21s to provide experience for the young players when we need him.

“Jay is still quite young and the impact he can have around the U18s is invaluable because he is someone who lives and breathes this club.

“More important, Jay has played across all four divisions, so I think he will be a really good addition for us.”

Last summer, Man Utd did similar signing former Hull City centre-back Paul McShane, who was 35 at the time, and has never registered to appear for the senior United side.

Scott Carson is still a member of the Man City squad and two days ago signed a new deal.

The 36-year-old initially joined the Club on loan in 2019, a deal that remained in place until the end of the 2020/21 season.

When his contract with Derby County ended last summer, he signed for City on a free transfer.

The former England international has now agreed to a further 12 months at the Etihad Stadium.

As mentioned, fans have been left baffled while others have welcomed the idea of Liverpool set to re-sign 33 year old Jay Spearing from Tranmere with plans to play him in the youth team and go into coaching them…

@TrentsDelivery: There’s your midfield signing lads!

@GregoryWood74: Jay Spearing a veteran! God I’m old

@MattBrownrigg20: Great to see us tackling long term unemployment with taking Jay spearing on again.

@b1esso: Midfielder sorted

@harrywolfendale: Don’t know why everyone is moaning about midfielder choices, we’ve got Jay Spearing coming in and we still have the Coutinho money to spend #LFC

@dangiallorossi: Are we sure Jay Spearing ain’t Danny Murphy’s kid?

@jonnykermode: Signing Jay Spearing seems odd on the face of it, but having an experienced player who knows our setup, our club ethos and will be primarily an U23 coach rather than a player makes a lot of sense. He’ll never get a senior game, but has a lot to offer. Good luck to him.

@J03Wrighty: Jay spearing joining the reds again has made my week so far

@dannypea: Love the idea of older players like Jay Spearing & Jack Wilshere returning to clubs to play in U23s.. The experience they can offer is invaluable and youngsters can learn a lot from them. All clubs should do this with ex pros!!!

@AS__1976: Let’s get one thing straight, Jay Spearing will be great to have around the club for the academy players, he’s had the experience of coming through the academy, making his first team debut but ultimately not being good enough and having to drop down and play lower league. So he has seen and can pass on valuable experience and information while also learning and getting his coaching badges, it’s good for all parties. I’ve met and spoken to Jay a few times, he’s passionate about his football, clearly loves the reds so I think it’s a great opportunity for him and gives our young players valuable insight

@clarkey1601: Didn’t expect to hear that Liverpool would be resigning Jay Spearing this transfer window if I’m perfectly honest with you!

@ps2startupintro: Jay Spearing like a Vietnam veteran talking to an academy player like “ive seen some shit mannn, I was in the trenches” describing his Hodgson days

@stu_mather_: Sticking a tenner on Jay Spearing scoring the winner in the champions league final 2023.

@Pete_Thornhill: Jay Spearing returning to help coach and play for the U23’s sounds like a great idea but it also shows how old i have become….i still remember watching him captain our reserves when he was a kid

@abe_LFC: Jay Spearing would be the signing of the summer surely. This would quiet all the moaners 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

@J_wicks21: I thought this was a troll account, wtf did I just read

@Elliotttttt8: Never thought I’d see Jay Spearing and Liverpool link up again 😂

@__Beav: crying at the thought of a 17 year old lad jogging out for his U23 game and seeing 33 year old Jay Spearing lining up opposite him.

@LFCAJ__: Tyler Morton will be calling Jay Spearing dad soon I can’t breathe

@leeharibo: Never thought I’d see Jay Spearing in a Liverpool top again 😍

@GrizzKhan: We’re an Injury away to fab Hendo jones Thiago Elliot Naby from Jay Spearing getting a game 😂😂😂😂

@Li4mgr33n: Signing Jay Spearing again what a fucking club we are

@Nik01K: Ain’t no way we’re bringing Jay Spearing back hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahaha We’re defo registering him for the first team

@Jack_Moore7: If signing Jay Spearing doesn’t scare City I don’t know what will

@TheKopHQ: Jay Spearing cameo to win us the Title. #LFC

@PaulioPaulio: We’re signing Jay Spearing hahahaha. I’m not even joking.

@CACoates96: Jay Spearing is scoring the winner in the Champions League final next season #LFC

@Jordan_AC90: I fucking love it that all the transfer-shaggers are losing their minds over the fact we aren’t buying a midfielder, then Liverpool go and re-sign Jay Spearing to play in the U23s aged 33. Proper piss-takers.
