Fans baffled at Oxford’s astonishing misses, wasted chances and penalty miss vs Sheffield Wednesday

Fans are baffled at Oxford’s astonishing misses, wasted chances and a penalty miss in game they should have won vs Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson saved an injury time penalty, as the high-flying Owls were lucky to come away from the game with a point.

Karl Robinson’s side started well and had their first chance. However, skipper Cameron Brannagan saw his effort saved by Dawson.

Wednesday striker Callum Paterson had a short-range shot saved by Simon Eastwood, only for the ball to go in the direction of Josh Windass but failed to convert.

After an hour of play, the hosts brought on striker Michael Smith to boost chances of getting that opening goal and almost found it within seconds when Marvin Johnson made a great pass for the frontman, and was just inches away from getting his head in the ball.

Oxford should have taken the lead with less than 15 minutes left when Mark McGuinness cleared Matty Taylor’s ball from the line and substitute James Henry sent it over the bar when had a perfect opportunity to score.

A penalty was handed to the visitors in stoppage time, but Josh Murphy disappointed with his spot kick going straight into the hands of Dawson, and the League One clash somehow ended goalless.

Karl Robinson felt frustrated after his players failed to take any of their chances and departed Hillsborough with one point.

Robinson said via the Oxford Mail: “It’s one kick, the greatest striker in English football missed a penalty and you hear everyone saying he’s one of the best players we’ve ever had as a striker.

“It’s okay for the greatest players in the world to do it, it’s okay for Josh Murphy to do it.

“He looked like a top, top Championship wide player and so did Yanic.

“Yanic looked like he had that power to compete at the level above, and that’s why we signed these players.

“It’s disappointing missing penalties but that’s part and parcel of football.

“Josh is an incredibly confident young man and we see that on a daily basis with tremendous ball striking.

“I thought Josh Murphy when he came on was outstanding and the penalty miss will be the talking point.

“I thought when him and Yanic came on, the whole dynamics of the team changed.”

On the game itself, he said: “That epitomises our whole season, that 90 minutes has been us.

“We’ve been very good at stages but not scoring enough goals.

“The amount of opportunities that we had to put this game to bed was unbelievable.

“Today we looked a cut above for the first time against a top team.”

Owls boss Darren Moore admitted that it’s something that has been worrying him for a while.

“Don’t think it is just worrying me now,” he told The Star. “It worried me before. The points on the board need to and can be better… But we do have a doggedness about us. The kind of performances, such as Port Vale away, are the ones we just didn’t have last season.

“We have to keep on knocking at the door. If we just accept it then how’s it going to change? We have to keep belief and keep working.”

“It’s almost as if we’re waiting for something to happen,” Moore said on a lack of urgency. “The game came alive in the last 15 or 20 minutes, and being the home team it was up to us to force the urgency.

“I thought for large parts the quiet spells suited Oxford. We’re not taking chances but maybe it can be down to over-thinking.

“In training we do work every week about finishing. Attacking players need to feel the back of the net. We had chances today but just didn’t get the right final touch.

“Before we were taking those chances. What we have to do is keep going. Nobody is going to give it us so we are the only ones that can change that… We’ll keep working hard towards it.”
