Fans and pundits ‘in disbelief’ at Stoke’s Ben Gibson escaping red card for elbow on Hull player

Fans and pundits were left ‘in disbelief’ at Stoke’s Ben Gibson escaping a red card for an elbow to the face on Hull player Oscar Zambrano.

Ex-Potters boss Gary Rowett spoke about the first half incident while live on Sky, upon reviewing the footage.

Gibson went in with his elbow and sent Zambrano to the ground when a cross was sent into the Hull penalty area.

Gary Rowett said: “I’m absolutely amazed. I just don’t know what he’s doing. Ben Gibson is running with his arm out. He looks at the defender. He pushes. After that, I can’t see any other outcome really than it being a red card for that sort of incident.”

While there was an agreement from Jay Bothroyd, he felt it was more to do with Stoke’s more aggressive play under Pelach, saying: “I think it shows a real intent. I think they’ve really, really laid a marker on it.”

But it wasn’t the result the new Stoke boss wanted come full time, a 3-1 defeat to a team that hadn’t won a game this season.

Stoke took the lead through Ben Wilmot, but Kasey Palmer and Regan Slater turned the scoreline around, then Wilmot’s own goal made it three for Hull.

Hull City’s man of the match Kasey Palmer speaking to Sky Sports: “To be fair, it’s the win that matters. Happy to get on the scoresheet and obviously a big three points.

“I think we were more clinical and that’s been the problem this season so far.

“We’ve been good in the build-up and taking lots of risks but today we’ve been clinical in front of goal and scored three, so we will take it.”

On kicking on from here, Palmer said: “There was a lot of pressure from the outside and we could all hear it from the fans in the last home game.

“But that’s football and tonight’s results changes a lot and we can look up the Championship table.

“It kickstarts our season and now we’ve got to follow it up and keep climbing the table.”

Hull goalscorer Regan Slater told Sky Sports: “I saw it rising so I knew it was out of his reach. I got lucky because it was a real bad first touch from me.

“Three points was big for us today. First half arguably we struggled a little bit but the lads stuck at it as we have been in the opening games and it came good for us.”

Stoke City manager Narcis Pelach told BBC Radio Stoke: “It’s a pity we couldn’t win the game.

“We wanted to take the points but I think the lads tried to put a new style of play in place.

“But in the second half we lost control and ran out of energy. We should have pressed more but we will try to explain this tomorrow and keep working on the defensive style.

“There is some things to work on mentally and we will do it. We will take the positives and we will improve.”

Narcis to Sky Sports: “We lost control in the second half. I would say at the end of the first half as well, we started to lose control. We looked out of energy, I could see some things of new style of working to do, defending the space. But we gave them a lot of possession. We had to be more on the front foot.

“But it’s just today, we will try to be more solid, to make the team more compact. It went that way, so I’m looking forward to the next week to try to train more and be more aggressive.

“The penalty, I think it was one. It’s a big moment, we didn’t take our moments in the game. We had a big chance for 2-0 and then it’s 3-1. If we take it, it’s a different story. We shouldn’t have lost, but then the game changed.

“We were affected from the [first] goal. We all saw that. We have to be stronger mentally. Something is always going to happen in games, so we have to try to accept it and try to go into the next action. We saw some things that we started to implement, but it’s a long season and we have to keep working and try to get better.”

Hull City manager Tim Walter speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s hard to describe because I never had this feeling before. I’ve never not had a win in five games so for me it’s a new situation.

“But I also knew the whole time that we can win. Today we did it and that’s the reason I’m really proud of my boys. They deserved to win.

“I’m happy because they always believed they can win and that’s important.”

On how the game changed in the second-half, Walter said: “After conceding the goal, we were better. We were more courageous. We showed more bravery and that’s the key to the result.”

When asked if it was a reward for sticking to his principles, Walter added: “It’s a first win. All we have to do is keep working. We can do everything better but it’s a start.”

As mentioned, fans and pundits were ‘in disbelief’ at Stoke’s Ben Gibson escaping a red card for an elbow on Hull player Oscar Zambrano…
