Fan footage sees wild celebrations, fan ‘aggro’, pitch invaders as Barnsley beat Sheff Wed in front of bumper atmosphere at Oakwell.
Barnsley netted twice in the final minutes to end South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday’s 23-match unbeaten streak, with the Owls falling to second in League One.
On the 10th minute, Devante Cole was able to pass the ball through to Mads Andersen. The striker beat Cameron Dawson with a low angle shot.
James Norwood doubled Barnsley’s lead with a second-minute strike from the outside of the area, two minutes after Cole broken the deadlock.
Wednesday got one back when Will Vaulks’ long ball found Michael Smith on his right. He sent over a low pass which Lee Gregory turned into the net from close quarters just after the half hour mark.
It was then 2-2 on the 74th minute as Barry Bannan’s over-the-top ball found Marvin Johnson on the left. Gregory completed his brace from close range.
After Luca Connell’s shot into the area caused problems, Max Watters found the net past Dawson with seven minutes left on the clock to give the hosts the lead again.
Liam Kitching scored a fourth goal in stoppage-time to give Barnsley a strong hold on fourth place and extend their unbeaten league record to 12.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, man of the match Devante Cole said: “To be fair I was thinking ‘Why has the keeper come out? When he came out I wanted to go between his legs and luckily it went there.
“If you’ve watched us recently you’ll know we’ve been starting games quickly and I think that’s what it’s about. We wanted to put them on the back foot straight away and we got two goals from it.
“It shows what we’re building here and we’re strong at home. Anybody who comes here knows they’re in for a tough game.”
Darren Moore told swfc.co.uk: “First and foremost I went around every player in that dressing room and congratulated them all on the unbeaten run because that takes incredible mentality.
“The run is over now, we accept that and we have to dust ourselves down and get ready for Sunday. We take the rough with the smooth, this is the business we are in.
“In terms of the game tonight, it was decided on chances. I don’t want to take anything away from Barnsley and credit to Michael Duff and his team.
“But they have had, I think, five shots on goal and scored with four of them. We’ve had more chances overall but not taken them and that was the difference really.
“It was a great advert for League One football and credit to both teams. When we got it back to 2-2, I thought there was only one winner and the points were coming back with us to Sheffield.
“But it wasn’t to be tonight so we look forward, we never look back, the next game is the most important one and that is Forest Green on Sunday back in front of the cameras.”

“It was a typical derby,” Barnsley boss Michael Duff admitted. “It wasn’t pretty at times, both teams going hammer and tongs. But we’ve come out of it on the right side so it’s pleasing, we’re really pleased with our performance.
“We went into self-preservation mode. I get it. The players are human beings. You get that lead, you want to protect it. But they’ve started throwing ball after ball into the box, great delivery, it’s become really direct – we’ve stood up well – and I always felt we’d get chances on the counter.
“We’re young, it’s a youthful group. We knew we’d get opportunities in the last 20 minutes. The energy we have; we get at teams late. I’m happy for the players but also, hats off to our support because that feeling at the end, it was amazing for everyone at the club – this is nine months in the making.”
🗣️ “The results are a biproduct of that”
