Fan fighting for his life with pub cordoned off amid trouble at and after Blackpool v Burnley

A fan is reportedly fighting for his life with a pub cordoned off amid trouble at and after Blackpool v Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The Manchester Pub, Blackpool, was the scene of a serious incident that police responded to on Saturday night with Lancashire Police confirming that an active investigation is currently taking place at the pub.

Officers discovered that a man suffered a severe head injury from an attack outside the pub around 7pm as per LancsLive. He was taken to hospital and is said to be currently in a critical condition.

A 33-year old male was taken into custody on suspicion of wounding. Investigative efforts are ongoing.

The victim is said to be a Blackpool supporter, with police taping the Promenade in Blackpool.

Blackpool Police wrote: “You may have seen police activity on Lytham Road, Blackpool, this evening (Saturday) so we wanted to give you more information about it.

“At around 7pm today patrols in the Promenade area attended an assault outside the Manchester pub.

“They found a man had suffered a serious head injury.

“He has been taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains in a critical condition.

“A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of wounding and he remains in custody. Enquiries are ongoing.”

LANCASHIRE POLICE STATEMENT:

An investigation has been launched and a man remains in hospital in critical condition following an assault in Blackpool last night (Saturday, March 4th).

The incident occurred at around 7pm, when an altercation broke out involving around 15 people outside The Manchester pub, at the junction of Lytham Road and the Promenade.

Officers were in the area of the pub following the Blackpool v Burnley football match and they attended and found a man had suffered a serious head injury. They administered CPR at the scene and the man, aged in his 50s, was subsequently taken to hospital, where he remains.

It is believed the altercation broke out between a number of football fans, with the man being injured as part of this incident. At this time there is no suggestion he was specifically targeted.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of wounding and he remains in custody.

An investigation has now been launched and we are working with both Blackpool and Burnley football clubs to establish who else was involved in the incident and what exactly occurred.

We are also asking anybody with information about what happened to get in touch.

DCI Tracey McMurdo, of Lancashire Police, said: “Officers were in the Promenade and Lytham Road area when they were made aware of a group of people fighting outside the nearby Manchester pub. Officers were in immediate attendance and provided medical assistance, before the man was taken to hospital.

“He remains in a critical condition and his next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers.

“A man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody while our enquiries continue.

“We are taking this incident extremely seriously and will do everything in our power to identify anybody who may have been involved. This type of violence is simply not acceptable on the streets of Lancashire.

“We are now appealing for information and are asking anybody who can help to get in touch straight away. Perhaps you have mobile phone or dashcam footage, or perhaps you saw all or part of the incident as it happened. Whatever you know, please tell us.”

Anybody with information should contact us on 101, quoting log 1262 of March 4th, or report it online at doitonline.lancashire.police.uk.

Meanwhile, there was also a problem in the stands, with a Burnley fan turning on his own supporters in the away end of Bloomfield Road.

The male who got thrown over seats is alleged by @jacbratcliffe to have ‘started on an old man and a woman with a child which is why he got decked’.

The game itself saw Blackpool hold Burnley to a goalless Lancashire derby draw with the Clarets close to breaking the deadlock just before half time, but Chris Maxwell made an excellent save to deny Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s well-hit effort.

Vincent Kompany’s men had almost 80% possession against the Seasiders, but couldn’t find a way past the hosts’ Maxwell giving each side a point each.

Mick McCarthy’s side has only picked up one win in their last 18 matches, and while it’s a point, they are still six points behind Cardiff who sit outside the Championship relegation zone, having beaten Bristol City.

Burnley are now 13 points ahead of second-placed Sheffield United, who had lost earlier in day at Blackburn and are now 17 points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough.

Twitter users reacted to reports a fan is fighting for his life with The Manchester pub cordoned off amid trouble at and after Blackpool v Burnley…

Teresa Williams: Sending thoughts to his family I am a travelling burnley supporter and this is not what football is about, not true football fans anyway It’s about drunken men becoming aggressive and looking for trouble I just don’t get it, family’s ruined today and people seriously hurt

Marie Kelly: Saw this all unfold was so very sad the poor guy was being worked on as we were walking up the prom towards the junction all this over a football game .. I hope and pray he recovers it was such a devastating scene tonight not just for those involved but for the emergency services having to deal with it too xx 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Iain Lucas: No one should leave to go to a football match and end up in ICU because of the team you support. Wishing him a very speedy recovery 🧡

Samantha Barlow: My kids and I are Burnley supporters, this man is in our thoughts and we’re preying he makes a full recovery. A fun sport to watch ruined by a select few who can’t handle their beer and now someone life has been turned upside down 💔

@PNEFansForum: Hope the reports of the Blackpool fan dying at the Blackpool v Burnley fixture yesterday, aren’t true. Nobody shouldn’t return from the beautiful game. Rivarly aside at times like this. I genuinely hope this is fresh in everyones mind at our fixture. #pnefc #BlackpoolFC #UTMP

@ClaretFPL: If the reports about a Blackpool fan losing his life in a pub fight yesterday are true, Im sickened. No one should go out to the footy and not come home. Stop playing at being hard men thugs, theres no such thing as a safe punch and what if someone pulls out a blade next. Senseless. It’s all ‘bravado’ and ‘fuck around and find out’ until someone never comes home to their kids. If even one person is carrying, that changes everything, if you’ve seen the look of panic in someone’s face as they’re bleeding out, that stays with you. Sickening

@JohnDoeFPL: Far too many match-going fans in this country feel the need to live up to the hooligan stereotype. Just go to the footy, have a drink beforehand if you want and support your team. Banter between fans is great, but leave violence out of it. It infuriates me

ON THE FAN IN THE AWAY END:

@nmclean77: He was a complete idiot who was steaming and possibly coked-up. He could barely stand, and he had been a nuisance since half time! The stewards had several opportunities to deal with it, but failed to do so, hence why the situation escalated the way it did.

@TurfCastPodcast: I remember my first beer. Gimps

@W1LBA: How this lad didn’t get thrown out at halftime is beyond me… it was inevitable

@theElgrunn: Fighting with your own fans when you’re so clear at the top is particularly shameful

@carlallanstutt1: Stupid idiots with any luck the lot of them will be banned not the type of people we need in our fan base !!

@JacobHorsfall_: Lad started on a mum and her kid, deserved it

@abbie_bfc: Apparently because of some fucking mong starting on a woman and her kid, absolute whopper.

@Joe99881636: Just embarrassing 🤣🤣

@ecleveland12341: Imagine being top of the league and fighting your own fans, strange bunch

@callum_linnane: Oh deary me 🤦🏻‍♂️

@billybrfc17: Hahaha absolute state of that lot

@ryan_murton: This wasn’t about loyalty points or somebody hearing a southern accent all jokes aside. It was somebody being a moron and everyone telling him to behave 👍

@ryan_murton: Burnley fail to score a goal for the first time in 31 games and they turn on each other 🫡
