Fan banned for five years over slurs and gestures at West Brom v Millwall

A 34 year old fan has been banned for five years over making racial slurs and gestures at the West Brom v Millwall match a few months ago.

He will not be allowed at any football matches for five years, with an additional punishment of a four-month suspended prison sentence.

Kaine Lewis was in the away end at The Hawthorns when he was spotted by officers on duty at the Championship fixture back in September.

Lewis initially denied any wrongdoing, however ended up later pleading guilty at Dudley Magistrates Court and now will also have to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

His discriminatory behaviour was directed towards supporters in the home stands and he was quickly ejected from the stadium and arrested.

As part of the police investigation, CCTV footage caught the fan making racist gestures which supported accounts of officers in the stadium that day.

West Midlands Police’s football hate crime officer PC Stuart Ward, who was in charge of the investigation, said: “This was not only disgusting behaviour but distressing for others who were at the stadium to see and hear.

“Lewis is old enough to know this is unacceptable and there’s no excuse for such appalling actions.

“We won’t tolerate racism, or any form of hate crime, within stadiums and we’ll continue to take action against offenders.”

Kick It Out reporting racism

Kick It Out is football’s equality and inclusion organisation – working throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and campaign for positive change.

A 50 year old West Brom fan was jailed after blaming autocorrect for sending a racist abuse to his own team’s players Romaine Sawyers.

A mindless Baggies ‘supporter’ has been sent behind bars for eight weeks for racially abusing the club’s midfielder on social media.

Simon Silwood was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning, with this the first case in Britain where somebody will actually serve prison time for racially abusing a footballer online.

A very significant ruling today in the fight against racism in football.

Silwood, from Kingswinford, West Midlands, has been also ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the player, who has since signed for Championship side Stoke City on loan, and £500 in prosecution costs.

Passing sentence, District Judge Briony Clarke said: “This is, Mr Silwood, a serious offence. There is no place for racism or racist abuse online.

“This clearly, in my view, crosses the custody threshold.

“I assess the remorse you have for your actions as very minimal indeed.”

Mr Silwood had denied sending the offensive message when appearing at Walsall Magistrates’ Court on the 9th of September.

He abused the footballer, who came through West Brom’s academy before stints at Walsall and Brentford and returning to The Hawthorns outfit in 2019, on social media when he suggested Sawyers should win the “Baboon d’Or”.

PC Stuart Ward, appointed the UK’s first football hate crime officer in January, said racial abuse of players was nothing new but he had been shocked by some of the complaints he had received.

The officer, who has himself suffered abuse, told Birmingham Live: “I’ve been in this role since January and within that time I’ve been taken aback by how many reports have come in. For me, it’s out there and it’s happening.

“It has been happening in football grounds since the 1970s, monkey gestures and throwing banana skins at players, it hasn’t suddenly appeared – it has always been there.

“Now players, football clubs and fans are more confident in reporting it.”

Twitter users gave their reaction with the fan banned for five years over slurs and gestures at West Brom v Millwall…

@Baggeridgebaggy: Doesn’t look the type at all…

@HookinMad: Should be a life time ban.

@TomHiggsWWFC: 34 years old!!!! Tough paper round that lad had.

@gavin_poulton: Well done WMP again!

@2vabwptb: 5 years? is this a joke? lifetime ban is REQUIRED

@MartAndSoul: Five-year ban? So his racism will be ‘cured’ after five years will it? It’s deep-seated bigotry, not whooping cough. A lifetime ban should’ve been the minimum punishment here, and following every single incident of discrimination at football matches. It’s 2021 FFS #WBA #Millwall

@MTFCFC: 1 big swinger outside McDonald’s cause my triple cheeseburger wasn’t plain and I had 200 hours CS on top of that bastard sentence what a sack of shite

@wba230388: Lifetime ban and immediate custodial sentence. Zero tolerance. Sick of this shit #wba

@Gidge11: Not good enough.

@R_Dubz14: Should be banned for life, cunt.

@mental_shuffle: Good, the cunt don’t deserve to step foot into another stadium again!

@SidNancy11: While I agree with banning, it doesn’t stop people being racist. I think it begins with education. However, it suits the Tories to keep people ignorant & give them something to fear/hate with their constant culture wars

@Nischal_SP: And after 5 years, what happens? He comes back and most likely does the same thing. If you’re being racist at football, it should be a lifetime ban and nothing less.

@stevenblake92: Let’s be honest should be a lifetime ban and why is the prison sentence only suspended???

@bighfizzle: Should be a lifetime ban and actual prison time. Proof yet again that neither the FA nor the UK justice system take the crime of racist abuse seriously enough
