FA Trophy sees FIVE upsets in Third Qualifying Round

The FA Trophy returned this weekend and once again we got to see more upsets being produced up and down the country.

It was the Third Qualifying Round which included teams from tiers 6, 7 and 8. A total of 5 teams managed to cause a shock against opponents in a higher league than themselves.

Boston United were one of four teams from tier 6 in the English football pyramid to be knocked out. They were defeated 1-0 by Northern Premier League side Atherton Collieries. Michael Brewster getting the only goal of the game which came in the 88th minute.

‎Southern League Division One Central side Halesowen Town also won by the same scoreline at home to National League North’s Gateshead, and just look at what Simeon Cobourne’s late goal meant to the players and fans…

Braintree Town ended up getting knocked out by Southern League Premier Division South side Yate Town who came away with a 2-1 win.

The fourth club from tier 6 to have suffered an upset was National League South leaders Wealdstone were lost 3-2 to Royston Town of the Southern League Premier Division Central. Highlights of the entertaining encounter can be seen below…

And lastly in this round-up, Isthmian League North Division’s Aveley came away from Biggleswade Town with a 4-1 win. Fair to say the journey home was celebrated well…
