FA Trophy First Round Proper sees four upsets with some rather surprising results

The FA Trophy First Round Proper sees four upsets with some rather surprising results and a bit controversy off the back of it.

This stage of the competition saw 32 ties played out with the losing sides picking up £775 and the winners £3,000.

The draw for the Second Round will take place on Monday, revealed at 1pm, with National League North and South sides entering.

Colne produced the highest scoring upset by putting five goals past league above Warrington Rylands on Saturday afternoon.

The Northern Premier League Division One West outfit booked a place into second round, but just as at Hyde in the previous round, they rose to the occasion and fought out a memorable victory and describes their current cup run as ‘stunning’.

Colne started superbly, taking the lead in the first minute when Owen Watkinson laid the ball back for Craig Carney to place a low 12 yard shot into the bottom corner of the visitors’ net.

Warrington tried to get on back fast, Dylan Vassallo’s run and cross gave Harry Pratt a sight of the Colne goal but Andre Mendes made a great save at his near post to deny the Rylands striker.

Colne went on the attack again on 11 minutes, Oli Roberts sending a free kick over the defensive wall and into the top corner of the net to double the Reds lead.

Again Rylands looked hoped to spark a comeback, but Colne defended well with Glenn Steel making a vital tackle to stop the run of Sean Cooke as he went towards goal and Mendes produced another good save to keep out Callum Dolan’s shot.

The goals didn’t stop there for Colne and went 3-0 up on the 23rd minute after Enock Lusiama’s shot was a blocked in the area and the rebound fell to Knox whose follow-up was deflected over the line by Watkinson in a crowded goalmouth.

Ten minutes later, it was 4-0 to the hosts, a free kick into the Rylands penalty area was punched by the keeper and fell to Tom Hoyle who made no mistake as he found the net with a simple finish.

Rylands up their pace come the second half and Hoyle made a great tackle to stop the run of Dolan as he ran through the Colne defence. But after 51 minutes, Warrington were reduced to ten men when Kane Drummond was sent off for a late challenge.

Colne went five up when Rylands keeper Joel Torrance strayed out of his area and was stranded as Lusiama put the ball into the empty net.

Rylands nearly got one back through Jak McCourt who saw his well struck 25 yard shot come back off the post of the Colne goal after 80 minutes.

Five minutes later, a cross sent into the crowded Colne penalty area saw the referee point to the spot for an infringement and Dolan stepped up to take the penalty, only for Mendes dived to his right to knock the shot away and keep a clean sheet.

One result that wasn’t an upset saw Guiseley comfortably beat Macclesfield 2-0, however just hours after the final whistle, the Silkmen, who are Northern Premier League Division One West leaders and are three points clear of second with a game in hand over second place, harshly sacked their manager.

Macclesfield issued the following statement: “Following a disappointing set of results that have seen The Silkmen defeated in three of the last five home games, Manager Danny Whitaker has been relieved of his First Team duties.

“This is a statement that nobody ever wanted to write, yet our current run of form – which has included elimination from the Emirates FA Cup, Isuzu FA Trophy, and two home league defeats from three games has proved to be unacceptable.

“The squad we have assembled should unquestionably be performing better than they currently are – particularly at the Leasing.com Stadium where recent showings have been nowhere near the standard we expect.

“We believe that it is the right time to make a change and that this is in the best interests of the Football Club – despite how painful it is.

“Danny will forever remain a Club Legend and will continue to play a critical part within our Academy structure going forward.”

Robbie Savage came under heavy criticism over the decision, while fans showed respect to Danny Whitaker. See more on this HERE.
