FA have successor in mind with reports Gareth Southgate could ‘quit’ England after Euros

The FA already have a successor in mind with reports claiming that manager Gareth Southgate could ‘quit’ England after the Euros.

Sami Mokbel of Mail Sport claims that the FA chiefs expecting to say goodbye to Southgate following next summer’s European Championship in Germany.

Doubts were first raised oer his future prior to the last World Cup with the likes of Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino all considered should Southgate walk away.

However, the FA are plotting to to tempt in Pep Guardiola — an option officials are open to especially with his contract at Premier League holders Man City running down.

Mail Sport go on to say that last winter, the FA had been desperate for Southgate to remain as boss regardless of the outcome in Qatar.

A quarter-final defeat by finalists France was enough of a reason to keep him, as 2022 also boosted their admiration of him.

But before the tournament in Qatar, FA technical director John McDermott is said to have held discussions with colleagues, impressed by both Howe and Potter, while the merits of Brendan Rodgers, who was with Leicester at the time, had also been discussed, as even Pochettino, who was out of work, was considered.

However, talks along with their preferred vision concluded to be that Southgate was staying.

They know a succession plan is needed, and is said to be more relevant now, with Southgate’s contract expiring at the end of next year.

Howe, Potter, Pochettino and Rodgers will again no doubt be on the FA’s list, but officials are ‘testing the water’ with Guardiola, with his deal coming to an end in 2025 — which is 12 months after Euro 2024.

Guardiola is reportedly offered public support for Catalan independence, with that potentially ‘creating political barriers’ which could stop him from getting the Spain job.

Mail Sport go on to add that Southgate could possibly stay on until the 2026 World Cup, there was expectation hee was going to leave after Qatar, instead he chose to stay — but a ‘well-placed source’ reckons Southgate would have quit had an attractive job offer came in for him.

England are already favourites for Euro 2024, with anything other than getting to the final next summer said to be a disappointment. Their is a lot of pressure and expectation on him this time around, can he do it? Can he bring it home? Or will England get their dream target in Pep Guardiola should Southgate fall short?

This is what fans said as the FA have successor in mind with reports Gareth Southgate could ‘quit’ England after the Euros…

@_chancey_: Any chance before the Euro’s?

@joshdownes2001: For me the national team manager should always be from that nation

@VillaVisionMatt: Can’t he walk now to give someone else a year’s prep for the euros

@macwills95: Pep would win the lot with that England squad

@Ste_Healy: Southgate leaving can’t come soon enough.

@WeahsCousin: It’s a warm summers day in July 2024, Gareth Southgate steps off a plane at Heathrow following a brave semi-final exit at the Euros, Summertime by Robbie Williams plays in the background. Gareth, embraced by his wife and son turns to the crowd and exclaims “FOUR MORE YEARS”

@A1ZH4RY: Feel like Pep would be open to this, in England feel he’s been most appreciated than the other countries he’s managed in. The media especially love him, barely have a bad word to say

@JasonTweets1980: Praise the fucking Lord. 1 more tournament and we are free

@badwaltirath: Cannot wait for the Southgate era to be over. His legacy will be that he created a better, less toxic atmosphere in the England set up & that’s it. Time to bring in a manager that we can win trophies with. Too many talented England players that we should not let go to waste.

@WorldofHotspur: After Euro’s 😂😂😂 Yeah let’s just waste yet another tournament with the worlds most boring man before bringing in a proper manager 🙄

@RossWNA_: Pep will do very wicked things with Jude and Trent

@AzamWHUFC: Not a chance Pep takes it imo. Would absolutely love him too but I can’t see it happening. I’ll be grateful for what Southgate has done in 2018 & 2020 however he should’ve gone after the World Cup last year.

@CharlieStorUTB: I may be outnumbered by supporting Southgate but holy shit if we get Pep Guardiola we might fucking win it all

@Tkmcnamara: I’d be buzzing with southgate going but pep wouldn’t go near this job. Still think he wants to break more records at city

@McDevitMyles: I really hope this isn’t the case but sadly I have the feeling the negativity around Southgate by an unintelligent minority of supporters, has seen him make this decision if this is to be believed. Cannot see Pep in the job though.
