Exeter fume at having ‘perfectly good goal’ vs Lincoln ruled out with Gary Caldwell sent off

Exeter City fume at having what has been called a ‘perfectly good goal’ vs Lincoln City ruled out with Grecians boss Gary Caldwell sent off.

The game ended 0-0, but Caldwell had been incensed when Ryan Trevitt’s stoppage-time strike was adjudged to have hit Angus MacDonald on the hand, denying Exeter a late win at Sincil Bank on Saturday afternoon.

The Imps came closest at the end of first half stoppage time, when Tom Bayliss saw his header come back off the crossbar.

Then towards the end of the second half, Exeter had the ball in the net in stoppage time, but it was ruled out due to striking MacDonald and led to Caldwell’s sending off.

The result sees Lincoln sit 12th in League One with 50 points from 38 games played, 11 points from the playoff places and Exeter 16th with 45 points from 37 games, 9 points above the drop zone.

Kevin Nicholson said, per the exetercity.co.uk: “We’ve done everything, including score a perfectly good goal, which has been taken away apparently for handball which is very hard to explain.

“We’re not allowed to talk to officials directly after the game, but we’ll see what he comes back with. I think, in a 50/50 game, they had twice as many fouls and the inconsistency and the frustration that has caused, has put the ref is a very difficult position because of course there is going to be emotion on the sideline.

“It would have been an excellent three points, but it’s still a great point. And it was an excellent defensive performance the back three and the goalkeeper deserve a lot of credit.

“Everyone is doing their job and it allows us to keep clean sheets and stay in games all the way through. A really well done to the whole group.”

Lincoln head coach Michael Skubala, via weareimps.com: “We performed well and were the better team. We did everything we did against Bristol Rovers, but just couldn’t get that goal.

“In the second half we totally dominated them. I’m frustrated with the result but the performance was good. We pushed, got on things, but just missed the goal that everyone wanted to see.

“Like a lot of teams in this league they came here and made it hard in a low block. Teams are coming here fearful because once we get the first goal then spaces open up.

“We want to keep pushing and getting points but the run is a good chance for us to look ahead towards next season already.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Exeter fume at having a ‘perfectly good goal’ vs Lincoln ruled out with Gary Caldwell sent off…

@anth_ecfc: Nothing wrong with that goal. Robbed

@Comins1Sam: It’s handball ffs. Don’t make out you’ve been done coz you haven’t. 😂😂😂😂

@LucasH170: Apparently everything was against us 😂 Magennis should’ve been sent off in the first half and Lincoln should’ve had a penalty

@youimps_: Cry, we should of had a stonewall pen were not crying about it, get a grip lads

@N_a_j95: Lucky escape there, nothing wrong with that goal

@JaydenDenton11: nothing wrong with that we should of lost 🤷

@JohnScott817587: Still fuming @EFL #ecfc #efl

@adamf_99: Can’t honestly see anything wrong with that, we’ve been lucky

@tksalwander: Can’t stand Josh Magennis but there’s nothing wrong with this

@Worthington_CL: Appalling decision.

@pastyshagger: Clear handball directly in front of his body. Spot on officiating.

@lilley1_roy: Ref had a poor game for both teams

@RodMurrell1: Looks like handball

@ECous24: Absolute travesty

@grecian1993: Not sure why this was disallowed 🫠

@Paulwhite19801: Off his leg not even sure it touched his fucking arm. @EFL_Comms your officials are fucking atrocious 💩💩💩💩

@ECFC1931:

@NigelMa20823614: @BBCMOTD @SKYSportsNews Can you explain why the @FA_PGMOL ref disallowed this goal.

@Zander_Lavall: Christ alive 😂 Refs are dreadful

@Jayslyy180: That’s unbelievable, Caldwell red again but I can’t blame him. Officials costs us two points today. It’s a standard

@NigelMa20823614: @FA_PGMOL. You are a bunch of cunts. Everyone needs to give every ref abuse at every match.

@mattydiggins11: A poor game of football that we didn’t deserve to win…… that being said, the decision to disallow the goal is atrocious and GC and the team had every right to question the decision. #ecfc

@RyanG33109: I’d be fuming if I was Exeter, no way on earth that wasn’t a goal at first glance.

@katej1984: We’ve got away with one there, replays show it was neither offside or a handball… having said that, that’s equalising the penalty we should have had early on
