Ex-Prem and EFL player Callum Slattery have been punished after he assaulted police, boasted about his salary and hurled homophobic abuse.
The midfielder, currently playing for Motherwell, was fined on Wednesday after shouting abuse at police officers during an incident at a nightclub before injuring himself when trying to run away.
Slattery, 23, pled guilty to two charges of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner. One of the charges was aggravated by prejudice related to sexual orientation.
He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court less than 24 hours after he scored in Motherwell’s 5-0 victory against their opponents Ross County on Tuesday night.
On the night of the 7th of November, 2021, an aggressive Slattery went up to officers after he was kicked out of a 18 Candleriggs nightclub in Glasgow and asked for more information about his ejection.
Officers were informed the footballer had been removed from the venue due to his aggressive behaviour and he was advised to leave the area and head home.
It was at this point he said to officers: “I have more money than you and my lawyers are better than yours,” before proceeding to call them “c****.”
Slattery was then asked for his details before stating: “I have a better lawyer than you do.” Prosecutor Ross Canning added: “He told officers that the reason this situation happened was because he was English and that they were racist c****.
“He said: ‘Just because you wear a yellow coat and black hat, I have got a better lawyer than you. I know the law, I’m a citizen, you all know nothing’.”
Slattery, who has played at Chelsea, Southampton and Gillingham, left the scene before making a homophobic remark towards a female police officer.
Officers reckon Slattery attempted to film them with his mobile phone but it was unknown if he pressed the record button.
The former England under 20 was then told he would be put under arrest, but he then took to fleeing, before colliding with a member of the public and tripped over a kerb.
He was taken away by officers to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he continued to display aggressive behaviour. Slattery also stated to the constables: “My lawyer will have your jobs.”
Kevin McCarron, defending, told those in court that Slattery had been dealing with a serious illness of a relative at the time. The lawyer added: “He is horrified and humiliated by his conduct that night – it is inexcusable.
“He is a young man who has never been in trouble in his life who was working in the Motherwell area. It was a quantity of alcohol for someone who doesn’t drink which is entirely unsustainable. He is facing a penalty for it and he doesn’t shirk away from it.”
Slattery has since been issued with a fine worth up to £1,350 and has been made to pay it within two months. Sheriff Paul Reid said: “I have taken everything into consideration that’s been said by your lawyer and realise at the time you were going through severe difficulties.
“It doesn’t take away your behaviour at the time which was disgraceful. You embarrassed yourself, your profession and your football club.”
This is what Twitter users had to say as the ex-Prem and EFL player assaulted police, boasted about his salary and hurled homophobic abuse before falling over and was hospitalised…

@NorthShoreFace: Just read that hahaha, what a weapon.
@andy_sawers: Doesn’t sound like his lawyers were that great after all
@JamesMcTav2: He sounds lovely.
@MattyWhiteEsq: Alcohol never fails!
@AWa21165473: Billy Big baws on a grand a week… hahaha
@McGinleyBhoy180: I’d imagine he’ll get an SFA ban for the homophobic comments.
@mfc_snp: He’s a lucky boy. If he’s been aggressive and abusive towards police then he got off light. Him tripping over a kerb is karma for his behaviour. He should be embarrassed.
@Cammy2487: What a wanker. Hope the kerb sorted him out.
@nathanj3001: Surely he is gonna get a hefty ban as a result? The SPFL can’t seriously let a player behave like this and get off Scot free
@BillBuffalino: It’s always Motherwell, isn’t it
@__greedo__: Long live the Cinch
@Campbell3311: Peak Scottish football
@JonayBrooks: Nearly ran away but collided with someone and tripped over a kirb 😭😂😂😂
@SPM1967: What a twat
@IKM1986: Class player, seems to be going through a hard time so hopefully learns from this, certainly reads like he’s bit of a muppet tho, hopefully a one off.
@budgiemcb: “Ma Da is bigger than yours” is the only thing missing here. 🤣
@foreverayllow: sounds like he deserved that instant karma
