Ex-Ipswich, Sunderland, Palace, Sheff Wed player reveals reason for joining Forest Green

Ex-Ipswich, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Sheff Wed player Conor Wickham reveals the reason for joining League One newcomers Forest Green.

The former top flight striker has joined the Gloucestershire outfit on a short-term deal, signing an initial deal until January with the newly-promoted club.

He also had spent time on-trial with Reading earlier this summer before joining the set-up at The New Lawn Stadium.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Forest Green Rovers have completed the signing of striker Connor Wickham, signing an initial deal until January.

The 29-year-old spent last season with League One Play-Off semi-finalists MK Dons – and adds more attacking reinforcement to the Rovers ranks.

Wickham started his career with Ipswich Town before plying his trade in the Premier League with the likes of Sunderland and Crystal Palace – and had spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Preston North End.

A former England youth international, the forward featured across all levels from Under 16s right up until Under 21 level.

Upon signing for the club, Wickham said: “I had a chat with the manager last week and I had a good think about it and this is definitely an exciting project that I want to be part of.

“This team are coming into this season on the back of getting promoted and the club are going in the right direction.

“The style of play at Forest Green suits me and is a part to my game that some people may not be aware of. I want to get back to my best here.”

Ian Burchnall, Head Coach, added: “Connor’s name was brought to us a couple of weeks ago so we met with him and thought it seemed a really good fit.”

“We know his top level is extremely high and we want to build him up so he can be a great player for us.”

“He was hungry to join us and be a part of what we’re working on here at Forest Green – he’s a great fit.”

@campatyoung: @FGRFC_Official Great player, loved him at Ipswich but sadly always injured!!!!

@stayloa: Genuinely a superb player in there. Could have been amazing at palace but was plagued with injuries. Good luck to him and hope he does well for you. Powerful, fast and a lightning bolt shot on his day.

@rokerite97: Injuries literally ruined this lads career. Really could have been a regular for England if he’d had better luck. Hope he does well and stays fit.

@JxmesCPFC: So unlucky with injuries for us wish he’d made it! You’ve got a hell of a player on your hands if he stays fit

@Phillipjfry2021: Great player, nice bloke, good professional with League one experience. Fantastic signing not only for the football but also for what else he brings to the club. Welcome Connor!

@FrancescoHunt1: Interesting to see how he does, could be very good for both parties this, push his career on again and even more firepower for fgr to utilise

@CraigJo89562205: Coming from a palace fan you’ve got one hell of a player, sign him on a long term contract and you might actually get a start out of him

@JLH5464: Wtf how

@SteveWashpalace: Smash it @ConnorWickham10 you have real quality and you will shine this season! Hope you like tofu! @FGRFC_Official πŸ’ͺπŸ’™β€οΈπŸ’ͺ

@josephsafc04: If we were still in league one, you could bet your house on him scoring the winner at the SoL to give forest green the 3 points

@ashley_bfc1: Forest Green attracting better players than us πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚β€¦. This window has been absolutely abysmal

@LxcIerc: nee way he’s 29 he’s 43 at best

@ItssAlff: 45 mins then he’ll be stretchered off

@Matt_Walker96: Mad what injuries can do to a career 😳

@achrislatham: A great deal for all involved. I think ex PL experience in the squad is great for younger players. And BTW FGR have a great record of taking in players with an injury record and getting them playing regularly. We also managed the work load of L2s smallest squad last season well

@robz9x: Great signing for FGR, short term deal so not too much risk there πŸ’š

@IpswichTownFans: Nailed on to score Saturday πŸ₯²πŸ˜‚ #itfc

@_RyMcCluskey: Potential to be a great signing that for LG1

@ryangriffin89: Interesting to see what he can do if he keeps fit
