Ex-EFL boss baffled by non league club sacking him despite sitting second in the table

Ex-EFL boss Steve Lovell as been left baffled by non league club Ramsgate sacking him despite sitting second in the league table.

Earlier this week, the 62 year old, was got rid of, with some fans thinking he must be leaving for a job at another team, such as Maidstone United.

But he has since revealed to Kent Online that it wasn’t his decision to leave, with Ramsgate chairman James Lawson having a phone call to reveal the news that left fans stunned, despite winning manager of the month awards late last year and only slipped to second in the standings due to a defeat at the weekend.

“The chairman rang me and said they wanted to go in a different direction,” said Lovell. “That was basically it.

“I’ve had no proper explanation.

“We’ve been top all season; I’ve been manager-of-the-month for the last two months.

“It’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to me in football, because it’s not something you say should happen.

“If we’d lost six on the spin and it looks as though you’re going to drop down the league, that’s one thing, but there’s no reason for this to happen.

“The only reason I’ve been given is they want to go down a different direction.

“I don’t know what that is. I haven’t got a clue.

“It’s quite upsetting. I really don’t understand it.

“Me and Mark have done all we can do. It’s really strange.

“Everybody thought I had another job when it came out and I had to say, no, it’s not that.

“I wouldn’t go after other jobs anyway. I’ve always been respectful to Ramsgate.

“We’ve done a good job. It was only when we lost down at Three Bridges that put us off the top, but there’s still 15 games to go. I really don’t know why this happened.

“They’ve not given me a proper reason and I can’t think of a reason. I can’t think of anything.

“I’ve not fallen out with anybody, I’ve not had a go at anybody, I’ve done the job as I always would do, as I did in the Football League.

“There’s nothing I can think of. I always do things properly.

“We’ve just brought a couple of players in (Rowan Liburd and Gil Carvalho) and the squad’s good enough. We didn’t need anyone else.

“We had an off-day on Saturday – that’s always going to happen from time-to-time – but even with four or five not at it, we could still have got something out of it.

“I enjoyed my time working there with Mark and I’ve had so many messages from the players. They can’t believe it but there you go.”

This is what fans said with the ax-EFL boss baffled by the non league club sacking him despite sitting second in the table…

@shouting_man: Shocked. Rams are a great footballing side. Surely can’t be going back to Gills in some capacity…

@TractorBoyCCFC: Interesting interview with him online. Basically he was sacked by the club. A very strange decision and one that would be worth the club explaining to the supporters

@NJONES1969: Wrong to get rid of him in my opinion

@SMMPCServices: With Ramsgate sacking Steve Lovell – you have to wonder what was going on behind the scenes there – I think the league is Chatham’s to lose.

@DmitriusOld: Non-league is mad.

@ChazSmudge: Perhaps football isn’t a results based business 🤣

@Bloomfield4Mick: Done very well at Gillingham a little while ago

@poveysammer: Crazy. Was a great manager could of got promotion

@CharReader1986: Absolutely crazy decision

@GasworksE: This is just plain old weird. Be interesting to see what @RamsgateFC say about it. When clubs do this sort of thing they owe their supporters an explanation.

@Ralfie01: Didn’t see that coming

@chappo04: Don’t like to see that …

@dobbin59: Shocked & disappointed.

@pearcey33: Big loss.

@andyhodder: Wow! That’s a shock

@KentJJH: The shear force of @ChathamTownFC breaking the clubs management 😉

@StewArmstrong: Very strange decision

@Deanochart19: such a shame was going so well why leave guessing another club has come calling

@poveysammer: Could of got the rams promotion 😭🐏
