Everton are at serious risk of getting a points deduction for breaking rules, according to reports on Wednesday morning.
The Toffees are preparing to have talks with the Premier League over their financial accounts over fears they could become the first club to breach the top flight’s profit and sustainability rules.
Everton were due to publish their accounts for the 2020-21 season back in December 2021, however publication has been delayed as they seek clarification from the league organisation over how much of their losses can be offset due to the impact of the coronavirus.
Everton recorded combined losses of over £260m between 2017 and 2020, something which in ordinary circumstances would mean a clear breach of Premier League rules, which state that clubs are only permitted to lose a maximum of £105m over three years.
Journalist Matt Hughes states it an anticipated that the 2020-21 accounts will include another loss in excess of £100m and the club’s financial situation has only got worse since the exit of major sponsor Alisher Usmanov last week – which could cost them £300m over the next 20 years.
The Prem have set a deadline of later this month for all clubs to submit up-to-date accounts, as well as forecasts for the remaining of the campaign. The process of getting the accounts will take a few months, and any clubs found to have breached rules will be charged come the end of the footballing season.
League rules state that clubs breaking their spending rules can be fined or deducted points, however have yet to find any of their members guilty in top flight history. Is that about to change with Everton?
Spending rules have changed due to the pandemic, with a three-year assessment period being extended to four. The two seasons affected by Covid when attendances were barely in their thousands will be put together and an average taken, to provide a figure for the allotted three years.
Everton are deemed to be at risk of being found in breach, leading them to petition the Premier League for allowances to be made due to Covid.
In their 2019-20 accounts £67million of the club’s losses were due to the pandemic.
The Premier League have said that they will permit so-called add-backs due to Covid, but have no fixed criteria as to what they include, with each submission to be assessed on a case-by-case basis, the Daily Mail’s article goes on to say.
Everton are concerned about their losses shown last summer when their transfer spending was dramatically curtailed.
After investing around £450million on new signings over the previous six years, the Toffees brought in four players on free transfers in the summer of 2021 and signed Demarai Gray from Bayer Leverkusen for £1.7million.
Twitter users reacted when seeing that Everton are at serious risk of getting a points deduction…
@jimmy190178: This would be hilarious 😂 😂
@AnthPatterson: The really interesting thing here is that if #efc have broken the rules the #EPL have no alternative other than to apply the maximum sanction possible. The League have changed the rules on sponsorship to try to slow down #nufc What precedent will be set?
@_efcluke: Moshiri has ruined our football club. Get him out NOW
@Rio32LUFC_: Merry Christmas #lufc fans
@KeletsoCTID: Dock them!!!!!😭😭😭😭
@jonathanMGR74: I can’t stand Everton, but how do they come under this much scrutiny yet Man City cheat their way through FFP scot free?. Money really does talk. 👍🏻
@JoeBlue202: 😍😍 liquidation on the horizon. Can’t wait for stress free weekends
@LiamNUFC98: Enjoy Rotherham United away next season Everton 😂😂😂
@NUFC_933: After reading about this, they should be deducted points now, no doubt about it. Extra for being shady about their accounts which they still haven’t provided to the PL.
@MNCTed: They’re fully mudded
@Logan14Cameron: Aww i feel really sorry for them 🤥
@ToonForChange: How not to run a club blueprint #NUFC
@YanisNUFC: Everton are at genuine risk of going down, I think this would push their fans over the edge! …It would also be a little funny!
@curran_steve: That’d be a nice helping hand 🙏 #lufc
@K3V1NJ0HN: Everton will get FUCKED if they get relegated because they don’t have relegation clauses in their player contracts and the owner is a sanctioned Russian so they can’t buy their way out of it. I can see Rooney taking up the Everton job in the championship tbh.
@gimenez1982: FFS We are doomed
@MattyRyder96: Hard to keep sober being an Everton fan
@Owensmiith98: i imagine the scenes hahahahhaha we stay up because of a points deduction 🤣
@ToonMouthTyne: Everton are screwed. £260M losses from 2017-2020. Astonishing figures. #NUFC #EFC
@lufcgrace: ‘Leeds only stayed up because Everton had a points deduction’
@BlockchainCJ: Everton should be docked points this season. If they stay up at the expense of another club by cheating that wouldn’t be fair. Dock them the maximum amount of points possible.
@Paul__Dawkins: When it rains, it pours. This is unrelated to the recent Usmanov stuff, but considering how quick the FA was to throw the book at Derby, Reading, Dover Athletic and other clubs that didn’t have the financial firepower to fight back, this could be disastrous for Everton.
@GeorgeWoodEFC: Surely that’s the end of Moshiri? How am I not seeing anybody on here calling for his head? Surely if there was any time to seriously protest against the owners then this is it?
