Erik ten Hag hits out at ‘unfair and unjust’ VAR decision as Man Utd lose to West Ham

Erik ten Hag hits out at an ‘unfair and unjust’ VAR decision as Man Utd lose 2-1 to West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Jarrod Bowen scored a controversial 90th-minute penalty as West Ham grabbed a much needed three points over a wasteful Man Utd side to jump above Erik ten Hag’s side in the table.

Casemiro looked to have salvaged a point for his side in the 81st minute, after substitute Crysencio Summerville took advantage of West Ham’s poor finishing in the first half to give them the lead.

However, the match took a dramatic turn in stoppage time when referee David Coote was sent to the pitchside monitor by VAR official Michael Oliver to look at a collision involving Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings.

After a lengthy assessment, Coote determined that the contact was sufficient to award a spot kick. Manchester United players were fuming by the decision, the penalty was soon taken, Bowen maintaining his composure, and sent the ball in the bottom corner.

Premier League Match Centre (@PLMatchCentre) tweeted: “#WHUMUN – 87’ VAR OVERTURN. The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by de Ligt on Ings. The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC MOTD: “Three times this season we feel injustice. We have to score, we created so many chances. We should’ve been two or three up. Second half we were forcing it but we allowed them into the game. When you are losing 1-0 you need big personality and character of the team and showed resilience to get back into it. Unfair and unjust the way we conceded the penalty.”

On penalty: “It was so difficult to see. Before the season there was the instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes. That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on field referee.

“More frustrations but I can do nothing with that. They don’t collect points and that’s what we have to do. We have to look in the mirror, we don’t score in a good game from our side. Create loads of chances and concede none but when you lose in this way it’s a bad feeling.”

Spoken to officials? “I spoke with them. But the decision is made. There’s no way back and that’s football. That’s a third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and on our scores and where we are in the table. It’s not right.”

West Ham boss Julien Lopetegui speaking to BBC MOTD: “Happy for the three points. We are happy for the fans and players, they deserve this victory after suffering a lot in the first half. Second half we changed different things and the first half was for them but the second was for us. We were able to compete better and win the match.

“We had some players with yellow cards so we changed at half time because we wanted to be aggressive. I wanted to put Crysencio Summerville on I thought he was key in second half. His energy and his way to play in the second half allowed us to get the goal. Fortunately we won. We keep positive when they scored and the commitment we appreciate the support from the fans.

“Each week I can make changes, thinking of ideas how to play against the opponent. I was thinking today Summerville could be key in the second half but he will play a lot. He did well, we are happy for him and for the team and players and fans.”

On penalty: “I didn’t see it. The players say it’s a penalty and the referee says it is a penalty so I am sure they are right. But I haven’t seen it. I prefer to highlight that after they scored we keep the energy and positive momentum to win the match. I prefer to keep that energy.

“We had a bad result last week but that can happen and today we’ve won against a big team. To win any match is a big challenge it’s difficult you have to go to the limits. We have to keep the energy to compete and be better.”

West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen speaking to PLP: “We knew we had to bounce back after a disappointing derby defeat. It was one of those games with lots of added time where it requires everything and everybody. To a fan and to a club with the fans we all dug in today.”

On penalty: “At the time I saw [Danny] Ings got kicked and I think they got kicked so I thought it wasn’t a pen. I had a feeling it might get given and then Cre [Somerville] had the ball and it was a waiting game. With penalties you have a routine you know where you’re going. But when you’re waiting you’re thinking shall I go the other way? But I stuck with what I know and stepped up and wanted to dispatch and thankfully I did that.”

On half time team talk: “We were annoyed at ourselves because we were turning the ball over and giving them chances. We kept turning the ball over and shooting ourselves in the foot against a side with quality going forward. We rode our luck at times and second half was a different feel. We knew it would be difficult but all it takes is a moment. We had a couple of chances and it felt like we were in the game and the fans knew that. We concede a poor goal and after that I think it was anyone’s game. We come away with a massive three points.”

On Somerville: “He’s been brilliant. He trains superbly, great person off the pitch and has waited for his chances. Every time he plays he has an impact and done that today. Can’t speak highly enough of him.”

On whether this is time to kick on: “It needs to be because this season we’ve been in positions where we’ve won 4-1 against Ipswich then gone and lost 4-1 to Tottenham. It’s about consistently winning games and if you want to be successful you have to see it as a building block.”

West Ham goal scorer Crysencio Summerville speaking to BBC MOTD:

“I thought when is the game going to finish?! We tried to build momentum and they scored for 1-1 and then you’re looking for the winner. Very happy, we needed this.”

On his goal: “I saw Danny [Ings] was going to hit the bar and just anticipated and thought yes I’m going to reach this ball. A lot of emotions because every forward player wants to play. I try to help the team in any way I can.

“I said to [Mohamed] Kudus if I go on I’m going to score so that’s why I went to him.”

On penalty decision: “Surprised because we played on. I tried to distract them as though I was going to take it but it was a long wait. Much needed [win] for our confidence.”

On getting more games: “I’m always patient and do my best on the training ground. I have to respect coach decisions but I try to help the team as best as possible.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Erik ten Hag hits out at the ‘unfair and unjust’ VAR decision as Man Utd lose to West Ham…

@pjjennings59: My team Wolves proposed binning Var. Premier League teams outvoted Wolves by 19-1 to retain it. ££££ talks . You reap what you sow.

@PattieJohnston: Remember Wembley, FA Cup semi final? Karma #pusb

@paulmincher1: They were happy in the summer lol 19-1 (wolves)

@lyon_maisy: Yes shouldn’t have been a penalty. But also the players are a disgrace missing those chances and playing poorly

@GarethLivesey95: Fair play.. only one win in your last 8 and you somehow manage to come out with a new excuse every time! 👏🏻

@jodiewo70620746: United were far better in the first half but West Ham were far better in the second, excuses for a side that should be chasing Europe but now are fighting relegation

@danattack515: The amount of people piling on ETH cause the PLAYERS missed a load of chances. So what you’re saying is, his tactics are working to get them into the right positions but when the players on the pitch don’t then score from those positions, it’s his fault?

@calster1520: I get it. The penalty incident was a joke but I hope Erik isn’t blaming the loss on that. We shot ourself in foot today. Chances we didn’t put away in the first half. Can only blame us for that imo…🔴⚫️

@Paul_S365: Never underestimate the power of Michael Oliver to make a bad decision even when he’s not actually the ref 🤷🏻‍♂️

@JoeWhybrow98: Absolutely a game of two halves. Man utd were dominant and could have been 3 goals up in the first half. However, the tactical subs and changes at half time gave West Ham far more possession and chances (albeit biased). How can you say FAR better than the opponent.

@DelMoulsdale: Don’t worry, you can just ignore this result and pretend it didn’t happen Erik

@lukesmart99: Players missing open goals cannot be on the manager… getting players in the right positions to create big chances is the managers job which he is doing but because these millionaire bottle jobs can’t stick the ball in the net he will take the blame for all of it… Fuck off

@DanielRSB33: How the fuck has this bloke still got a job 😂😂😂 14th in the league. 11 points after 9 games, GD -3 🤡 Yanited fans must be livid

@westhamfan86: If you took your first half chances what happened in the second half wouldn’t of mattered. 🤷‍♂️ but ya didn’t

@karenbeardy: Were you though? Missed a complete sitter. Granted more chances first half and yes, the PEN wasn’t a pen, but FAR better? I think not.
