English non league ground set on fire in shocking arson attack

An English non league ground was on Tuesday night set on fire in shocking arson attack as confirmed by the club via their socials.

Emergency services were called to Egham Town of the Combined Counties League Premier Division as a fire has broken out in one of the stands.

The Runnymede Beat of Surrey Police attended the incident with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to investigate and put out the fire.

According to the police post of Facebook, the fire was large scale with the report made shortly before 7.30pm on May the 4th.

In a post, Runnymede Beat said: “We are currently on our way to assist our Surrey Fire and Rescue Service colleagues with a large fire which has broken out in the stands at #Egham Football Club. More details to follow when we have them.”

Egham wrote: “Well the kids have excelled themselves again over the Bank Holiday weekend.

“Smashing up the fences and burning the seats to the main stand. That is a pile of melted plastic in the photograph.

“These seats cannot be replaced individually. A full row needs to be purchased at considerable cost to the club!

“Despite being reported to the Police at least twice over the weekend they were still left to do their vandalism.

“KEEP YOUR KIDS AWAY FROM THE CLUB!

“Its not a playground and one of them will eventually hurt themselves.

“Every kid that has ever been seen in the ground says they didn’t do anything 🤔🤔

“EVERY parent tells us their kid wouldn’t do such a thing! Well someone clearly is and it needs to stop!”

Then a few hours later, they wrote: “And now they’ve been back and burned it all down.

“Loads of names were being given to the local Police and I’m sure they will be getting a visit soon.

“This has escalated it to a whole new level.”

The club’s chairman took to social media, saying: “Dear All.

“No doubt you have now seen the pictures taken of tonight’s arson attack on Egham Town Football Club Ltd. The fire brigade believe an acceleration was used.

“This is one of many arson attacks we have had and reported one that happened on Bank Holiday Monday when 10 seats were burnt and we subsequently sent photos to Surrey police, Surrey Fire and Mr Stephens.
Unfortunately this is a very sad situation as the whole stand is lost where the steels are disfigured and twisted and one floodlight, we can see no immediate conclusion.

“Regards, Patrick Bennett, Chairman Egham Town FC Ltd”

They add: “As Egham Town fans know the main stand was known as the Brian Askew stand. A legend lifelong supporter who is sadly no longer with us.

“The people who burned it down also burned the name plate with his name on it. Sickened to the pit of my stomach. No idea how we can recover from this.”

Surrey Police say: “We have two 14 year old males in custody on suspicion of arson following a fire at #Egham Town football club on Tuesday evening (4 May).

“A scene cordon remains in place at the location since yesterday evening whilst the investigation continues. We are awaiting SOCO to complete a forensic sweep.

“If you have information you think can assist us please send us a direct message quoting crime reference 45210045968.”

The club said: “Egham Town Football Club would like to thank all who came to assist us last night. The fire brigade, ambulance service, the police and the local Councillors who came to see what had occurred.

“Also thank you for all the messages of support the club has received.

“Its all a bit overwhelming at the moment.”

It comes just weeks after a fire damaged part of the stadium used by the women’s team of Premier League outfit Everton at Walton Hall Park.

The fire service was called to deal with the incident at 6.24pm, with scaffolding and plastic netting alight. Footage on social media showed a section of the home stand ablaze.

A fire investigation officer attended the scene and the police were also asked to attend.

Everton game against Chelsea that week in the Women’s Super League went ahead as planned.

Everton moved to the ground from Southport in the summer and had been planning to increase the capacity from 2,000.

A statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service read: “Firefighters were called to Walton Hall Park on Friday 12th March.

“Crews were alerted at 6.24pm and on scene at 6.30pm. Two fire engines attended.

“On arrival crews found a football stand to be well alight. Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

“Crews left the scene at 6.57pm and handed the incident over to Merseyside Police.”
