An England fan who died in Bulgaria has been named as Rob Spray and £21,000 has been raised for his family to bring him home and mourn him.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the 32-year-old West Brom supporter, having been discovered in the city centre ‘helpless’ at 10am Monday.
Various reports claim it happened when he was taken to a police station for ‘threatening behaviour’ towards medics.
A spokeswoman for the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said of the death that he was a British citizen, 32 years old, at 10am in the city centre and was taken to hospital after being found in a “helpless condition” but he has died and the police are now working to clarify all the circumstances.
She couldn’t confirm local reports that the person involved had taken drugs before the incident.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed another man suffered a broken arm after being involved in a separate incident in the city.
The said: “Our staff are supporting a British man following an incident in Sofia and are in contact with the Bulgarian Police.”
Baggies season ticket holder Rob Spray from Cannock was described as “one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet”.
His sister Katie Brown claims he died in suspicious circumstances while in police custody.
She added: “We need to get my brother home.
“Could you please help my absolutely broken family get their son back and my brother home?
“Anything left over will be given to prostate cancer which my dad is fighting.”
Devastated pal Steve Overton said: “I love you very much my friend.
“This news has had a massive impact on everyone that was lucky to have known you.
“You were a fantastic lad, a great character and we will all miss you for the rest of our lives.”
The GoFundMe reads: “Don’t know exactly what’s happened but we do know Spray was the nicest softest lad everyone ever met .
“What happened is nothing but a tragedy. We all need to come together to support Spray’s family as much as we can.”
£10,000 was the target, and the family stated the rest would go to the Prostate Cancer charity as the West Brom fan’s father is currently suffering with.
