Eighth tier club set to make history in receiving six-figure fee

An eighth tier club are set to make history in receiving a stunning six-figure fee for their 22 year old eSports FIFA player Tom Leese.

Hashtag United are reportedly on the verge of doing something no one has ever done after allegedly getting two offers for England international eLion Tom Leese.

If this goes through, it could bank the Isthmian League North Division in the region of £50,000-£100,000, something that is big bucks for a team of the level they’re currently at.

Tom Leese is considered one of the best professional FIFA players in the world, with the top-level professional players earning around £10,000 per month and their social media brand is lucrative for organisations in attracting sponsors.

He started this journey at the age of 17 for the FUTWiz Academy and he soon got banned from mini-tournaments with his friends at each other’s houses.

Instead, he competed in tournaments on a bigger platform, built up a following throughout the time in playing, and recently won £20,000 in prize money when representing Watford in the ePremier League in August 2020.

“I definitely didn’t expect when I came into FIFA to be in such a privileged position at such a young age,” he told SPORTbible.

“The prize money can definitely help my mum out whenever she needs it because it’s repaying the faith she put into me.

“At 18, it wasn’t easy for her to just let me play FIFA for a living – especially as I’ve always been a fairly smart student and I was looking to go to university.

“I always look to help anyone out if I can, if my mum ever needs anything or my family, I’m definitely always there to do that.

“It’s something I’m very proud of being able to do at such a young age.”

“I think my aim professionally, which I don’t think will last too long and I’ll get another ten years of it because the science suggests your reaction time gets slower – is to win everything,” Leese explained.

“I don’t think I’ll be happy until I’ve won absolutely everything in the scene. After that, just to be in a position that I can look after my family.”

Leese has still yet to agree personal terms with the interested clubs or if Hashtag will accept the bid – but the potential transfer money would reportedly be reinvested into a new football/eSports stadium as the club continues to expand.

Although big money transfers have reportedly taken place in other areas of esports, a source close to the negotiations is confident this would be the ‘first of its kind’ for FIFA.

“Organisations sign a player like this to grow their brand and attract sponsors. If they get the best player they’d gain access to significantly better sponsorship opportunities,” one source told Sky Sports News.

WHAT IS ESPORTS?

Esports is a form of competition using video games and often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as teams.

Although organized competitions have long been a part of video game culture, these were largely between amateurs until the late 2000s, when participation by professional gamers and spectatorship in these events through live streaming saw a large surge in popularity.

By the 2010s, esports was a significant factor in the video game industry, with many game developers actively designing and providing funding for tournaments and other events.

In the late 2010s, it was estimated that the total audience of esports would grow to 454 million viewers, with revenue increasing to more than US$1 billion.

The increasing availability of online streaming media platforms, particularly YouTube and Twitch, have become central to the growth and promotion of esports competitions.

Despite viewership being approximately 85% male and 15% female, with a majority of viewers between the ages of 18 and 34, female gamers have also played professionally.
