Dwight Yorke gets mocked after giving viral Sky Sports interview on Aston Villa

Dwight Yorke gets mocked after giving a viral Sky Sports interview on the Aston Villa job which went to Steven Gerrard instead.

The Premier League club’s former striker has revealed he contacted the co-owner Wes Edens about replacing Dean Smith as head coach.

Yorke has publicly pursued the managerial position at Villa Park since retiring in 2009, and he wanted the job in October 2016 when Steve Bruce was appointed and missed out two years later when Smith succeeded the Geordie in the Villa Park hot-seat.

Yorke spent eight years at Villa as a player, scoring 73 goals in 231 league games, before leaving for Manchester United in 1998.

Now, three years after his last application was turned down, Yorke has told Sky Sports that he approached American billionaire Edens about becoming Villa’s new manager before Steven Gerrard was appointed on Thursday.

“I have to say at this point in time, although I have a fantastic relationship with Wes, I still haven’t been able to get a response,” he said.

“You still would like them to say, ‘It’s not possible, we have other options, maybe another time when the job becomes available again’.

“You just like to be acknowledged, but you’re not even getting that. I have to be realistic, and real to myself, understanding the challenge I face as an individual getting in.

“It’s not going to be as straightforward as some people have it – and that’s a fact. I have to look elsewhere and try to get some managerial experience somewhere else.”

Aston Villa announce Steven Gerrard as manager

Gerrard has sealed a three-and-a-half year contract at Villa Park and has reportedly been promised a bumper transfer fund by Edens and Nassef Sawiris to build his own team ahead of the January transfer window.

The Villa owners want to take the club back into Europe and are banking on Gerrard being the man to lead them there, considering he managed to do so with Rangers who reached the Europa League knockout stages for consecutive seasons between 2019 and 2021.

As mentioned, Dwight Yorke gets mocked after giving that viral Sky Sports interview on Aston Villa, see what was said below…

@joeohara18: He does it everytime we sack a manager at least since Lambert days, suggesting its a racial slur..

@Holte_ender1: Has no parenting experience either

@CCLFC2022: Harvey still waiting for a birthday card

@jaxonac: Just think, somewhere there’s a fan who applied with his football manager CV taking villa to champ league glory, and he is more suitable than Dwight Yorke in terms of managerial experience

@RichieLionel81: does it every time. He turned his back on villa, went and played for small heath but seems to think Villa fans still adore him. We don’t.

@mg_ashmore: Think its the third time he had applied for the Villa job, never seems to learn that having played for us isn’t sufficient and does nothing to improve his chances. Also seems to think people have forgotten the disrespect he showed the club several times.

@_MB_6: Man can’t even manage his son never mind a football club

@ChristinaZandes: The guy should think about checking if his own son is okay before sending out his CV with no experience… waste

@Jackader: Can’t even get Harvey a birthday card how do you expect him to coach a football team

@azzamay90: He wants to take over being the dad to his kid before he does anything the wrongen

@Pricey1983aa: Probably mailed it to the wrong address. Along with all those child support cheques and Birthday cards for Harvey.

@Reemzestilo: He should get some experience managing his children first

@suburbiainruin: The more surprising thing is with the way football is I can’t believe he didn’t at least get an interview even with the fact

@Bk8iP3: Can’t even manage his own son, let alone being a football manager

@Lee_Bickerton: Every time the job is available he pipes up

@pard0nater: I do this too…on Football Manager. Apply for jobs I have 0 chance of getting.

@whatNeilSays: Now he knows how his son feels

@ChubbyMead: Where do these ex-players get the sense of entitlement from? Dwight Yorke has done diddly squat to even warrant a conversation about the villa job.

@1982ShOrTsTufF: Should spend his time calling his son

@MortyCraig: So they ignored a guy with zero management experience…he can’t look after his own son never mind a football team.

@jimblingeuph: Here we go with the race card again. The man has zero management experience. Doesn’t even get involved in punditry as far as I’m aware? Can’t even look after his son let alone a squad full of egos.

@Strabane_Tyrone: That Dwight Yorke is a proper looper. Does he really think that Villa would ever consider a manager with zero experience?I have some advice for Dwight, go to a smaller club and get some experience. Oh and go see your son too. I would rather have Ted Lasso #AVFC
