Disallowed goal causes controversy as Port Vale and Cardiff play out draw

Disallowed goal causes controversy as Port Vale and Cardiff play out a 0-0 draw in the second round of League One fixtures.

In the first league meeting between the sides in 22 years, Cardiff were fortunate to come away with a pick, despite being outplayed. Port Vale dominated physically, creating multiple chances through set-pieces, with Jesse Debrah and George Byers nearly finding the net, while Cardiff’s Calum Chambers almost gifted an own goal.

Cardiff struggled offensively while Vale were strong performance, including a disallowed goal by Mitch Clark, gave them the edge, but were also wasteful in their bid to convert chances.

Phil Sproson (Ex-Port Vale captain on BBC Radio Stoke): “It’s hard to criticise Port Vale because they put in a right shift to nullify Cardiff.

“Cardiff showed quality at times but never really showed much to hurt us.

“Vale pushed Cardiff back and I was impressed with the midfield three. They stood strong and they gave confidence to the front two and give problems to Calum Chambers and co.

“After having a bloody nose at Rotherham on Saturday – to a man they’ve played well tonight.”

Port Vale manager Darren Moore speaking to Sky Sports:

“When it’s the first game of the season at home you want to try and win and get the three points but I just thought today we were set up right, we had the right energy, we had the right temperament and I thought we caused Cardiff one or two problems and we might have capitalised in the one or two areas that we got in to. But overall I’m pleased with the group.

“Brian [Barry-Murphy] has got a wonderful team at Cardiff and they play some lovely football but we knew we had to be disciplined off the ball but also at the same time capitalising on some of the areas that they’d leave open get into certain area and we did do that.

“If I’m critiquing the team in a small area was that we could have shown a little bit more composure in the final third and just got that contact on the ball.

“We’ll learn a lot from tonight and we’ll apply it to the next game.”

Port Vale midfielder George Byers speaking to Sky Sports:

“I’m disappointed we aren’t coming way with three points. We dominated most of the game.

“We were aggressive on the front foot right from the whistle.

“In future games, I’m sure we will score three or four on a night like this.”

Port Vale defender Mitch Clark said:

“I think the boys know that every game is going to be tough but if we go out and give it our all, we’ve got a chance.

“We are creating the chances so time will tell and we will hopefully get some goals.

Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy speaking to Sky Sports:

“I think it was a difficult game for us, I thought Port Vale played really well and we weren’t at our best so I’m fairly happy that the lads stuck to the task and managed to secure the draw but a lot of the things in the game weren’t how’d we’d wished.

“In the first half we misinterpreted where we should be on the pitch and things can become quite stressful and rushed. We attacked very quickly and never had quite enough composure to switch play and get our positions from the wide players correct.

“Credit to the opponent, they were effective in their game plan and our game wasn’t quite at the level as it was on Saturday but we’re very new together and it’s my responsibility to show the players how to be in the right position and hopefully make the game more comfortable. It takes a lot of work and that’s my job.”

Here’s how fans reacted after a disallowed goal causes controversy as Port Vale and Cardiff play out a 0-0 draw…

@KieJW21: Looked on side I thought, officials are dreadful in the EFL.

@grassrootsrefJa: Incredibly close decision, I would say it is just onside but the attacker could easily be just leaning offside. Easy for people to criticise the assistant referee when they’ve got the benefit of a still on a replay with no pressure.

@spaulinnit: Offside for me. Bear in mind the lino can’t see through the attacker to see if he’s level. He takes a position just in front of the line to make his judgement. He’s making that judgement through highly trained eyes. At semi-pro or grassroots that would be offside every time.

@BenMorris82: Nothing changes, Vale getting atrocious decisions against us, again.

@Nozzzaaaa: Nice to see the ref and Linos are still as 💩 as ever in this league 🙄

@wilko2012: Port Vale are literally against 14!!!!! Shocking officiating!

@ARTibbs94: We got away with that, he’s miles on

@nickcarr49: Goals are The Entertainment, yet they try like fck cancel them all out 🤷🏼‍♂️.. Terrible decision… get rid of offsides altogether, by doing so, it will get rid of liners cheating and Likewise VAR

@_kieranbl: That’s ridiculously tight tbf. Hardly a bad call

@sherratt1876: The liner has guessed that & got it horribly wrong. Absolute piss take

@JWILSON990: Now the officials are even bantering us when the nations cameras are on them. Shocking officiating.

@diffanalysis: It just is offside…… right? Am I eyes deceiving me with pure delusions or bias?? Blokes offside muhn

@trainfanmatt: The linesman is standing perfectly in line and he still calls that as offside? 🤣🤣🤣 How are football officials so bad in this country? 🤣

@scfc_rob: People expect far too much of officials. Guys an inch or two onside and people are acting like it’s absolutely blatant and that it’s an easy decision

@TomDearlove1: His big toe was offside. Good to see an improvement of EFL officials
