Did the ball cross the line? – Coventry left astonished by referee’s call

Did the ball cross the line? – That’s the question asked with Coventry left astonished by the referee’s call defeat to Hull City on Tuesday.

First-half goals from Richie Smallwood and Ryan Longman gave Hull a welcome Championship victory to dent the Sky Blues’ playoff hopes.

The home side started the night five points outside the top six, however fell 2-0 behind inside the opening 30 minutes with Smallwood giving the Tigers a fourth-minute lead, and then a thumping finish from Longman doubled the lead.

Ian Maatsen thought he had pulled one back late on, however officials didn’t receive confirmation that the ball had crossed the line – but fans are having a lot and it and some are convinced it went over.

As you can see, a half-volley was partially cleared off the line by Jacob Greaves and bounced into goalkeeper Matt Ingram and seemingly over the line, however goalline technology didn’t send its signal to referee John Busby.

Coventry City’s official Twitter wrote: “OH MY… Maatsen’s shot is about two yards over the line and the referee waves play on… Speechless…”

Luke Tisdale, standing in for Mark Robins who is still out with coronavirus, was questioned on whether he thought his side should have been given a goal.

“I don’t know. I have seen some footage that suggests it is, some that isn’t and obviously Hawk-Eye will send the imagery through in the next 24 hours I imagine.

“Had it have gone in it probably gives us a big lift going into the last five or six minutes obviously with the amount of late goals we score as well.

“The players think it is in and like I say some camera angles say it is.

“The goal-line technology is there for a reason, obviously you have to trust the technology.

“We have seen it go wrong once, I think, at Aston Villa a couple of years ago.

“Since then it generally looks like it has been right.

“If the technology had made a mistake it has made a mistake and it is something that has cost us the opportunity to get a draw.”

Did the ball cross the line? – As Coventry are left astonished by the referee’s call, this is what fans made of it online…

@barnsey__15: Nah this is taking the piss now

@TheHenryCheal: Ref a Hull fan. Done

@_mrjwilson: What on earth is this officiating in this country đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™‚ïž

@sarahcodd1: Goal 100%, doesn’t these refs have them watches on for when the ball goes over the line? Another team robbed

@1cornishblue: Wtf! It gets worse this game of football bollocks

@Tippex9: The ref at the @Coventry_City game tonight has waved away a stonewall penalty and not given a goal with the ball clearly over the line. Can we check his phone for betting apps @EFL

@Deoxyribo87: Some geometry for you. A football is a sphere, just because the area touching the floor is over the line doesn’t mean the full ball is.

@watto_79: What are these people talking about. Goal line tech says it didn’t cross. There’s no argument. It’s clear as day.

@joshwoodcock_: Sorry but that’s over the line. How has the ref’s watch not given that.

@susie351975: Was well over the line

@TerryWAllison: Miles over.

@Moseley3_: HAHAHA @EFL_Comms sort your officials out

@skybluedave89: It’s not even close it’s that far over

@Dom_Ren_Lewis: Goal not detected. Tears detected. Lovely.

@dionthxmas: The state of the officiating in the Championship needs serious looking in to, teams getting fucked over on a weekly basis. Officials need to be held responsible for constant bad decisions it’s getting beyond a joke
