‘Diabolical’ – It was a tough day Jack Wilshere’s Luton, who were humiliated in their embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Barnsley.
It took 7 minutes for the hosts to go ahead, Reyes Cleary chipping the keeper, with Patrick Kelly tapping in to double Barnsley’s lead 20 minutes later.
On the verge of half time, Luca Connell scored a superb 20-yard free-kick to make it 3-0, Barnsley also hit the woodwork twice.
It was an own goal by Gideon Kodua that made it 4-0 with around 30 minutes remaining of the second half, then Davis Keillor-Dunn sealed it with a fine finish, on 75 minutes.
The result means Barnsley sit 9th with 24 points from 14 games played, a few games in hand of sides around them. Luton however are 12th with 23 points from 16 games played.

FT Barnsley 5-0 Luton
Honestly, were brilliant and fully deserve their win. They could’ve scored more.

Wilshere said, per Luton Today: “I think we started the game okay and we had some moments, they had some moments as well, but I feel like we gave opportunities up too easily.
“We have to take our chances, we have to be clinical as in this league teams will come back at you as they did and then we gave away too many easy goals and it becomes difficult as you’re chasing, so it was a tough day. I think we have to have more quality definitely, at times we showed some nice moments, we just have to be more consistent with that.
“We have to maximise our opportunities in the final third for sure and we have to make sure we’re controlling their players up the pitch when we are attacking, because we’re conceding in transition moments and we will face that a lot this season because we want to be the team that takes the ball and dominates it.
“It was way, way, way too easy today and technical efficiency is what I call it. We work on it every day, we have to get better at it, we have to be better on the ball at times, but too many easy goals.
“It’s a tough one to analyse right now, I need to get on the bus and watch it back to really see the goals, the positions we were in, the errors we made, as I said to the players before, I feel like we’re growing defensively.
“It’s important in this team that we defend with everyone, we’re compact, and we’ve done that really well since I’ve come in. We’ve kept some clean sheets and I was thinking going into the game, defensively we’ve been okay, we need to get better going forward, like we saw against Rotherham, but defensively we weren’t good enough today.”
Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane said per Yorkshire Post: “I’m delighted with the lads. I want them to play with real courage and take the ball.
“What I’m big on is not just kicking the ball away and slashing at it. We want to play and progress and get us up the pitch in the right way. I thought the lads were brilliant from that point of view.
“I’m so, so thrilled for them. But they need to know that this is hopefully a benchmark for us.
“We’ll have a really good week next week and hopefully we can go to Stockport after a really good week on the training ground and give ourselves a chance to get a result.
“We’re in a decent place at the minute, but we’ve got to keep working and keep building on it.
“We’re not at home for a while and we’ve not had a league victory at home for a while. We’ve had a lot of cup games, we’ve had international breaks, so it feels like a long time since our last home victory.
“I was delighted to put that to bed because we’re on the road now for a little bit. I said (to the players) we were pretty impressed with you.
“There’s been a good buzz, good energy. The training has been really good and I felt like they were in a really good place going into the game.
“We gave them a fair amount of detail information on how we can nullify the opposition and I felt like if we put it together, we were going to put ourselves in a real good place to build into the game and to get the result we all want.
“So credit to the lads, they’ve been amazing over this last couple of weeks.
“I asked them to put a kind of a marker down for us in-house to make us feel like we’re going in the right direction and to a man, they did it today. I’m really proud of them.
“I was shouting and screaming even in the last two or three minutes because I was desperate for the clean sheet. We’ve worked so hard on this.
“I’ve made a big point of it and we’ve done so much work on the grass. Over the last batch of games where we’ve not kept clean sheets, there’s not been too many individual errors. It’s just been work with the team and how we look when we’re in that little bit of a low block and teams have spells against us.
“We need to be more connected and we need to do our jobs and we’ve done loads of work on that.
“I know we didn’t keep a clean sheet against Donny, but the back line are starting to get even more protection now from the lads in front of them, which is adding to a team-orientated, defence-minded focus at the right time to keep clean sheets.”
Here’s how fans reacted to Jack Wilshere’s Luton being humiliated in an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Barnsley…
@ollie_poulton96: Embarrassing, half the squad are not good enough
@cclarke100: Let’s be clear here this isn’t about managers it’s about GS & 2020’s directive of recruiting and sanctioning deals for loans, cheap journeymen and injury prone players in the hope if give them time they will come good. That’s not a sound strategy for a promotion seeking club.
@Harry99245453: Really unlucky today lads, close game could’ve gone either way 🧡
@Scottie_Alex: This might be the worst Luton team ever assembled. Quite some achievement from the recruitment team.
@RCW7777: Wilshere has no loyalty to any of these players so I hope to god he’s ruthless in January. Didn’t watch so wont comment on today’s performances but there is a real case for needing players all over the pitch even in positions you’d not have expected.
@hatterneil: If I was JW I would quit now. These frauds are going to kill his managerial reputation before he’s got going.
@DeggyUK: I think it’s important that although this was a heavy and poor defeat that we don’t get too tied up on it. Another game Tuesday. We were 5 games unbeaten and still look much better passing the ball around. There’s no guarantee to win every game and it’s clear the lads still have some work on that mindset when we concede. We have 6 more games in 2 weeks. If we play this bad for all of them, then we can have more concerns, but I believe today was a bad day in the office, put it behind and look forward to Tuesday.
@EllTFC96: Refund all who travelled and dock wages. Our striker who we payed for had 1 (ONE) shot in 70 minutes (taken in 90th) against a team with 1 clean sheet in all competitions. Ill have AAH or Eli back with 1 leg between them than this. Onwards to Tuesday I guess #ltfc #coyh
@LewisT_Williams: Biggest concern is producing a performance like that after building confidence in recent games, especially one against top of the league with a new manager. 2nd half annoyed me more than the 1st… at 3–0 down you at least show some fight. Weak mentality. #LTFC
@LUT_OWN:
Walsh
Mengi
Andersen
Nelson
Wells
Yates
I don’t want to see any of these players play for us again.
Naismith and Saville not far behind.
Where is your pride?
@Dnlchzz: Absolutely nothing will change at the football club until the dictator at the top is gone, no manager will change that. He’s completely lost sight of the short term future of this football club and it will end up costing him his long term vision. Something has to give.
@MAW1912: Luton trying to play a way they clearly aren’t capable of. Pointless possession, passing around their own box, wide open when losing the ball. Tactics clearly wrong for the group of players. Outplayed and out thought in every part of the game.
Luton really poor. Basic errors. Turnovers. Passive. Not winning duals. Defensively exposed. All 3 goals started with Luton mistakes. This is giving me Lincoln vibes. Feel for the fans again. Players badly underperforming #Hatters @BBCSport3CR pic.twitter.com/bNZxijC0hs
