Derby mock Bristol City, fans walk out on 32 minutes, Struber vents fury at 5-0 defeat

Derby mock Bristol City, fans decided to walk out on 32 minutes, Gerhard Struber vents fury at his side’s 5-0 defeat on Friday night.

County move them into the Championship playoff places, with Rhian Brewster (13′), Ben Brereton Diaz (16′) and Bobby Clark (36′) scoring in the first half, then Patrick Agyemang (66′) and Lars-Jorgen Salvesen (88′) added to it in the second half.

Sam Bell also had an effort just before half time ruled out for offside.

Before the game, M5 motorway closure caused severe traffic problems in and around Bristol, with Sinclair Armstrong and Neto Borges were delayed, arriving just under 30 minutes prior to kick-off, and forced Struber into making last minute changes.

At 2-0 up, Derby fans were ole-ing every pass and there were chants of ‘can we play you every week’ from the away end.

The result sees Derby jump five places into sixth, while Bristol City drop two spots to ninth after their goal difference.

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

“In all aspects it was not really the day to control or to realise a good performance.

“In all aspects it was nothing. We have to be honest it was not our standard. It was a game far away from the Bristol City team that I know.

“It’s the first time that I would say we come completely under the bus and under the wheels with the energy from them, with the physical power from them. We were not ready and create the resilience against a team like that.

“This was not the level you need against Derby, and also the body language – I must say this was far away.”

Struber said, per Bristol World: “Everything that can go wrong went wrong today from the preparation. And I would say the game was a mirror from the preparation and at the same time, with a bad preparation you cannot play on this level. We were far away over the whole game in all aspects from our football, from our typical behaviours. I could feel a really good Derby team with a lot of physical statements, with a lot of really good transition moments.

“We were not ready in box defending, we were not ready to stop the crosses. So in more, I would say in every aspect, we were second winners and not ready today to create a resilience in this game to bounce back.”

On traffic delays disrupting his preparation: “Of course, I think we have a completely different plan today, how we find our starting eleven, but we could not bring our starting eleven on the field what we want. Some players were not here, so this was a special one. I never had this before but I think also in difficult moments we should not show a face like that. Of course, this was really bad how we prepared the boys today, but at the same time, we cannot have a performance like that. So, yeah, we have a traffic disaster, but also we have a game disaster.

“And my expectation today was, of course, also on a completely different level. And then we start in the preparation of this game. This was not professional, this was far away from that but no one can do something for that. We have to deal better with that. This is also clear, but this was not Bristol City today, this was special.”

Derby County manager John Eustace speaking to BBC Radio Derby:

“I’m delighted with the effort. We spoke about giving the front players more opportunities.

“For them all to score was great, and Lars getting his goal was good as well. It’s a shame Eamesy couldn’t get one on his Championship debut.

“There’s a lot of hard work ahead, for sure.

“Bristol are a really good footballing team and we knew they wanted to dominate possession, so it was important that we were clinical when we won the ball back.

“No-one’s getting carried away – the main thing is to get to 50 points – but the players are gelling and we’re getting that consistency.”

Eustace, per Sky Sports:

“It was an excellent performance. We’re coming up against a very top team and we were very clinical which was really pleasing.

“We could’ve easily won more games at home this season but we keep working hard, we’re a very tight group in the dressing room and there’s 16 huge games coming up.

“The first goal is always to get 50 points, we’re five away from that now. It’s about progression, it’s been about rebuilding this football club and there’s a fantastic group of players in there.”

Twitter users reacted after Derby mock Bristol City, fans walk out on 32 minutes, Struber vents fury at 5-0 defeat…

@TheFPLRobin: BREAKING: Selling your best players and spending as little as possible has a negative effect on the team.

@Walsall_Ram:
Who put the ball in the Bristol net..
Who put the ball in the Bristol net..
Who put the ball in the Bristol net..
Half the fucking team did
You Rams

@IanRatcliffe21: Be careful for what you wish for though! 🚮 I am grateful to Steve Lansdown to what he’s done with us, but it’s very clear he’s no longer interested. Sell up before we end up in league 1

@bcfc_beth: Disgusting performance. Not one player deserves any credit tonight, every single one of them shocking. No fight, passion or a pass strung together. But don’t worry we’ll fill the void with free transfers and loans 🙄

@KaiserBCFC_: Sell your best players and replace with loans or cheap kids. This is what you get Lansdown you cheapskate bastard #BristolCity

@WeatherhoggJoe: Board is a bunch of freaks. Don’t let us go up or down. Just staying where we are forever. Get out the club or invest. Embarrassing again

@BCFCRobinsView: Feels like a really sour day. Concerns regarding ownership & situation growing but that said I can’t defend Struber and the team for that. No real excuses- that team is far better than what I just saw- arguably worse home performance this decade.

@JacksonMacmanus: Our biggest defeat since 2010, the board have blood on their hands, if the Vyner deal isnt cancelled last minute after this then we collectively have to protest, get out en masse outside the gate, and not stop till something changes

@louiedun11: Genuinely they don’t get enough shit because they’ve been good for long but fuck me randall and knight dont half look like they’re strangers

@Jordwalker19: That’ll be Conways fault. At least you have your earthy song back tho lads, mind the gap x

@bcfc_ellis: Half of them on the pitch wouldn’t have gotten minutes in the Hellenic

@SLDBCFC: Somethings got to change in the hierarchy cannot continue doing this for another 20+ years of just being a stagnant championship side. Derby nearly went bust a few years ago and absolutely shit all over our squad.

@JoshGrotzke: Absolutely fucking awful from start to finish. Heart looks like it’s been ripped out of the team. Don’t call for change though, you’ll be told to “be careful what you wish for”. Should be grateful and expect Struber to work miracles with one fit centre back. Time is up.
