‘Dejected, flat, no fight’ – Norwich fans vent anger after defeat at Swansea

‘Dejected, flat, no fight’ – Norwich fans vent anger after defeat at Swansea in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Zan Vipotnik found the net twice, first in the sixth minute and then with a stunning long-range strike in the second half, to secure Swansea’s first home win in five Championship games.

Despite Jovo Makama’s leveller for the Canaries just before the break, Swansea’s victory put serious pressure on manager Liam Manning and Norwich, who remain in the relegation zone after losing their last five games and failing to win in their past seven.

During the game, away fans chanted “you’re not fit to wear the shirt”, then made their feelings known further as the players applauded the travelling support.

Liam Manning said, per The Pink Un on his future: “You’d have to ask Mark. That’s not on me, to be fair, like I say, we had really good support from Ben and the people above me at the club,” he said. “I don’t fear anything. For me, it is what it is. We’re in a bad spot. I’m obviously a part of it. I’m enjoying being here, but I want to change it, I want to keep fighting.

“I want to get the lads on board, in terms of them really owning it, and stepping up. That’s the bit I concentrate on. I can’t concentrate on uncontrollables in the future and what that looks like.

“It’s quite clear in terms of understanding what the issues are, when I look at it, in terms of where we’re at, there’s so much to do right across the club. I knew the challenge when I came here.

“Has it gone how we wanted? No. But in terms of the work we do, the plans we have, when you look at so many of the games, and I look at the four before this one, and for me, there’s been so many positive elements.

“When you look at the volume of change in the last 18 months, two years at the club with the age of the squad, the signings we’ve made, then everybody would love it to be smooth and a nice, straightforward journey to performing well and winning games. But it’s not the reality of the world.

“I’ll keep my head down and I’ll keep pushing people. I think I have a good group of people around me, good staff, good support. I’m not here trying to fight everybody on my own.”

“As much as I’d love to get it over the line, I need the lads to go with me. So I have to push them and find out the ones that want to,” he added. “I have to find out the ones that want to come on the journey and the ones that, like I have said about Kenny (McLean), where you know what you get.

“Every game’s huge at the minute. So when we go into (Hull) game next week, the ones that I can trust are the ones that are going to be the players who step up and fight.

“That’s the challenge when you look at it. And again, I think having bodies return, we’ve got (Amankwah) Forson this coming week, having Mathias (Kvistgaarden) back, having bodies helps you do that.

“And because of the injuries we’ve had it’s been quite challenging to make changes and hold people to account for performances when they’re not quite at it. Having bodies back in will allow us to do that.”

Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan: “Vipi is playing with confidence,” he said.

“We have been trying to keep him and Adam (Idah) fresh so they can play with intensity.

“And his goals today were two moments of excellence really, they were top, top quality. He deserved it because he is a great lad.

“I am very pleased for the team as a whole, we started the game really positively, got the goal and we had a few more opportunities to go and get that second goal.

“It didn’t come and then we conceded before half-time. They changed formation at half-time, they bring a lot of numbers to the build-up so we adapted as it can be hard to get enough pressure on the ball high up.

“As a defensive unit we limited them to very, very little and we are delighted with the three points.

“The lads gave everything and worked tirelessly for each other and the badge, so I am very pleased.”

Canaries Trust Statement

The Trust is acutely aware of the discontent amongst Norwich City fans regarding events at our beloved club, both on and off the field.

Last night we were aware of a significant number of Norwich City fans, either by being contacted directly or by monitoring social media; many of them the type of person who would be the last to wave a burning pitchfork. But these are people who are genuinely concerned that the club that they love with all their heart, the club that in many cases they have followed around the country for many decades, is now on a slippery slope that could end in disaster.

With the furore surrounding the stadium redevelopment still very much at the forefront of people’s minds, following an extraordinarily poor run of home form with no points earned at Carrow Road, the two limp defeats this week have ignited an already volatile situation.

The heartbreaking regression on the pitch while nothing appears to change is both confusing and provocative to fans who want nothing more than to be able to take pride in their team.

There is a widespread feeling that we the fans are disconnected from, and not valued by the Club, while drifting apparently rudderless towards League 1. With that in mind, we sincerely hope that Mark Attanasio will be able to communicate a plan for recovery both on and off the pitch when he visits.

‘Dejected, flat, no fight’ – Norwich fans vent anger after defeat at Swansea…

@RichardBalls: I surrendered my season ticket after 24 years and it was a hard decision. The football had nothing to do with it. Rather it was the way I believed fans, especially the “whingers” and “divorcees in the Snake Pit” were being treated by the club. That lack of respect has been underlined by the arrogant way the club has handled the moving if fans from the River End, and the deafening silence from our Sporting Director over the complete collapse of the team he assembled. This has to end here. #ncfc

@Kate011085: I wonder what JHT is thinking now? To see Manning is still safe, in the midst of one of our worse ever starts to a season, must be quite baffling #ncfc

@NorwichPure: How can a group of extremely highly, overpaid individuals be so oblivious to the fact that this club is sleepwalking at an alarming rate into League One? Those players are gutless, spineless, and flat out not good enough. Tough conversations, an understatement. #NCFC

@Guerreronator: How on earth is this man still employed? Our club is an absolute joke and there is no one capable of making a correct decision, the Attansio’s have a lot to answer for allowing this to happen. Hull is going to be very toxic #ncfc

@SamJermy: Fck me…..when will this end as a #ncfc fan? Derby won, Blackburn won, Oxford won…..Yet it seems Norwich has a Sporting Director who won’t sack the manager as it will be admitting he can’t do his own job either. At this point, we need the owners to pull the trugger ASAP…?

@Jparker7398: My god, every time I see yesterday’s goals the more wound up I get. So passive, backing off and allowing players to run and shoot. If we carry on being that soft then we’re going down. #ncfc

@calkane: WTF were those subs. This bloke is a complete fraud. Players were knackered at 70 mins. The whole squad is unfit, the coaching is abysmal, substitutions at HT ridiculous. He is without doubt the worst manager/coach in my 55 years, and that’s saying something. GET HIM GONE.

@DrDublin1: I don’t think this forced clapping from the players helps. Just get down the tunnel and do better next week. When I first sat in the Family Enclosure, 35 odd years ago, the players didn’t do this clapping thing after a loss, they left and hopefully did better.

@canarieschatt: The forced clap just to get shouted at still confuses me #NCFC

@jimmynodge1902: We’re twenty fucking third yes TWENTY FUCKING THIRD!! No win since August the 30th the club openly said the ambition was top6 and manning and co are still here!! MANNING KNAPPER WEBBER ADAMS OUT! #ncfc

@DraytonCanary1:
People criticise if they don’t come over and clap
But I agree
Get on with it etc
Likewise, the empty words interview
Fwiw I’m not sure all interviews have empty words
But when you’ve lost, only actions and improvement dictate
When you’ve won, no one cares
Apart from celebrate
