Danny Welbeck winds up Newcastle fans with a goal celebration and claims he’s a “Mackem at heart” when heading down the tunnel.
The 34 year old former Black Cats player scored the winner in extra-time as Brighton beat Newcastle to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
It was a bad afternoon for Newcastle as Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card, which means he will miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

Player of the match, Welbeck, on scoring the winner at St James’ Park and his form:
“It’s a big moment, to get the winning goal. It was a solid team performance and there was a lot going on in that game today. A lot of ups and downs, but we stuck with it, stuck together and I’m so proud of the lads.
“Newcastle are a really intense side and they can always put you under pressure. They have some great players with quality in there and are very dangerous. But we stuck to our guns and put in a great shift.
“I’m feeling very good. I’m feeling fit and strong. Thanks to my mum and dad, I’ve got good genes, so there’s a lot to come.”
Welbeck, speaking to ITV: “It’s great to get the winning goal. It was a solid team performance and there was a lot going on in that game today. Lots of ups and downs, but we stuck with it. I’m so proud of the lads.
“Newcastle can always put you under pressure. They are very dangerous, but we stuck to our guns and we put in a great shift.
“I am feeling very good, feeling fit and feeling strong. Thanks to my mum and dad for giving me good genes.”
On Brighton’s chances of winning the FA Cup: “It is going to be really tough.”
Welbeck, who also scored the winner at St James’ Park earlier in the season, speaking to BBC MOTD: “It is nice to come here to St James’ Park, such a special atmosphere. The fans made it an amazing atmosphere – great to get the winner, again.
“I feel like we played well. We know when we come up against Newcastle that it’s going to be an intense game. They have some dangerous players with some great ability, and we have to match that, and we did that today and come out on top.
“When you’re on the bench you have to analyse the game and see where you can make a difference and today that’s what we did. You see Joao Pedro at the end struggling to run. He gave so much and I believe that’s what gave us the winner.”
Welbeck on Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler: “I think he knows that whenever I’m on the bench I am going to be analysing and making sure I can have an impact. I tried to do my best and thankfully I got the winning goal.
“We have got to push on. There’s a lot more to come from us as a team. It is exciting times and we’re looking forward to finishing strong.”
🗣️ “He’s a great leader, a great role model and a great player.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, speaking to BBC MOTD: “It was a very emotional game. Lots of ups and downs. The key was we stayed together, we stayed calm, we tried to find solutions.
“They had a big chance hitting the post, but then I thought we were controlling the game. The penalty was out of nowhere. We played with a lot of courage, we had some small chances and then after we conceded we showed a brilliant reaction.
“We focused on our solutions, staying clam. In the second half we were very dominant. We suffered a little bit when we received the red card, but overall it was a great performance.”
Hurzeler on Danny Welbeck and Solly March: “Two special players, very helpful to have them in the team. They are great characters, they are hard workers, they have a lot of experience and it is important to have them in the squad.”
On winning five in a row: “We can only win something if we stay together and that’s what we must focus on. In football there is not a lot of momentum, but we have to understand why it’s like this at the moment. It is important to stay grounded and keep doing the basic things.”
On possibly reaching Wembley: “They [fans] can dream, and we can work.”
Hurzeler, speaking to ITV about Danny Welbeck’s England prospects: “It might be possible, but it is not my decision. The only thing I can say is I am happy to work with him, he is a great leader, great role model and a great player.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon’s red card that rules him out of the Carabao Cup final: “I don’t think Anthony has gone with any intention to do any harm there. I have to see it properly before giving a big opinion on it.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to ITV about Anthony Gordon’s red card: “It looked harsh, but we will have to analyse it properly. We have not seen a replay of it. I am going on my original view, I thought it looked harsh.”
On the possibility of appealing the red card: “Possibly. Anthony didn’t mean any harm. I have only seen him very briefly before coming out to you and he was very disappointed.”
