Danny Ormerod scores from just inside his own half in Fylde’s 4-1 win over Macclesfield

Danny Ormerod wows fans as he scores from just inside his own half in Fylde’s 4-1 win over Macclesfield on Tuesday night.

Ormerod got his head up, saw Rogan Ravenhill out of his goal, and then struck it hard, a superb finish with the goal going viral on social media.

The result sees Fylde top of the National League North table, with 72 points from 32 games played, and point ahead of South Shields, who beat Worksop 3-1 on the night.

Craig Mahon said on the wonder goal: “Yeah, he’s been unbelievable for me, I have to say. I always judge a person from who they are before the player.

“So the person before the player, Danny Ormerod is absolute unbelievable kid. He’s humble, he’s mannerly and he does everything he can for this club.

“And then you look at the player that’s inside him and it’s even better. He’s a joy to watch, he’s a joy to be around and tonight I think he made a statement for himself and I think a lot of ours will be on him now and he deserves all the credit, he deserves all the… anything that comes from him he deserves it because he’s been brilliant.

“But it’s off the ball for me, what he does. The walk rate and the energy that he gives the lads and then his goal scoring abilities just up there with the best in the league.

“As long as he keeps his head down and keeps working hard, think Fylde will be in good place.”

Ormerod said: “Yeah, I still can’t believe it to be fair. I looked up, I seen Basi running and I was like, I seen the keeper just like at the edge of his box I think. And I was like, I’m just hitting it. Like, just hitting hope really. Think one in 100 of them probably go in but it’s gone in and it’s a worldie yeah.”

Interviewer: “Does that just sum up your confidence at the minute? Because I think I said in commentary that last year, for whatever reason, it just wasn’t quite going for you. And this year, I think at one point I saw you with a massive smile on your face. I think it was after that free kick. And I think that just kind of sums up where you’re at at the minute. You look like you’re really enjoying your football.”

Ormerod: “Yeah, probably last season. I wouldn’t have even tried that. To be fair, I would have tried to pass it. Then I’d feel like I would have given it away or something. Do you know what mean? But yeah, that just shows the confidence I’ve got. I feel like I could shoot from anywhere. It’s got a chance of going in.”

Interviewer: “Talk about the actual performance and that second half in particular, because I think in the first half, obviously, Mack had a lot of the ball and we really had to sort of dig deep. What was the message at half time?”

Ormerod: “It was bit kind of like the Buxton game to be fair. We obviously had to dig deep in the first half. Obviously, we got the first goal. We didn’t want to concede just before the second half, but I had to dig deep the first half. Then I think second half, we played our stuff. We played through them a lot more. We had to go a bit longer at times, which I think we’re learning to do loads better. And yeah, was just good performance all around.”

@CallumHallett6: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… Danny Ormerod is as it gets for talent outside of the Football League – He’ll go onto play @ a very good level. But my word, enjoy him whilst he’s in Non-League. The kids special. 🪄
