Danny Lloyd opens up on the ‘heartbreaking’ downfall of Marcus Maddison

Danny Lloyd opens up on the ‘heartbreaking’ downfall of Marcus Maddison during an interview with the I Had Trials Once podcast.

Marcus Maddison was described by former teammates and managers as an unbelievable talent, who always wanted to score goals and did just that, with a magical left foot.

Then Gateshead manager Gary Mills speaking in August 2014 said on the other side, he works hard. Marcus was a selfish lad when I first came to the football club and now he’s a match-winner and team player.

He career continued to shine for years that followed, a free-kick specialist too. But following his time at Peterborough, his love for football and personal issues had an impact.

In April 2021, Maddison announced his decision to quit professional football after expressing he lost enjoyment in the sport, along with the negative effect his career was having on his wellbeing.

Marcus Maddison was also sentenced to 20 months in jail for a vicious assault on 60-year-old woman. More on that further down in this article.

Now Danny Lloyd has spoken on Maddison…

Danny Lloyd: “So they had a lad there called Marcus Madison. Now, this kid was incredible. Premier league ability, non league mentality. He was just a bit of a weird egg, do you know what I mean?

“And a bit of a recluse in the dressing room. You only mixed with certain lads, wouldn’t give any of the other lads the time of day and things like that. Especially lads coming up from non league. Look down as if you were shit on your shoe. Like mate you’re playing in League One, like and that just wouldn’t flow with me.

“I’m too opinionated for someone to think that they can look down, down at me in a dressing room where we’re now playing at the same level. Don’t care where you’ve been. Like, if I had been up there and was now down at, you know, I’ve been in League One. I don’t treat any of our lads (at Southport) different because they’ve not played in the league. Like, who am I? I’m no one.

“He was meant to be leaving. He was meant to be going to get his Champ move and then. And then, not that I was a direct replacement, because we’re completely different types of winger, right, but the profile was the same.

“Score goals, create goals, take, set pieces. That sort of maverick influence in the team where you go and create. Anything can happen off the cuff. That’s what he did for them over a long period of time.

“And he was good. Like, very good. 30 plus assists a couple of seasons on the spin.

“But he could never get up his move because of the way he was off the pitch and everyone knew it and he could never escape it.

“And it’s heartbreaking in a way, because I actually think he’s in prison now.

In August 2023, the ex-EFL and non league player discovered his prison sentence after a disgusting incident which took place the previous year.

He was described to have been boozed-up, with Gazette Live reporting that the footballer chucked cheesy chips at the 60 year old woman before breaking her nose and leaving the victim to bleed.

She had been making her way back home after spending time in Darlington town centre with her daughter, but in the incident, he called the latter a “fat s***”.
