Dan Gosling reveals why he decided to sign for League Two high-flyers Notts County

Dan Gosling reveals why he decided to sign for League Two high-flyers Notts County, having more recently turned out for Watford.

The Magpies have signed Gosling, 33, who has featured in the Premier League for Bournemouth, Newcastle and Everton, but had been free agent after being released by Championship side Watford in July.

He linked up with Notts on a deal until the 6th of January after Matt Palmer was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Notts say Gosling brings “experience and pedigree” to their promotion push and will reassess the situation come January.

His new club currently sit 2nd in League Two, their first season back in the fourth tier since 2018/19, and have 30 points from 16 games played.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Central midfielder Dan Gosling has joined us on a short-term deal, subject to EFL approval.

Gosling, 33, has signed until 6 January and arrives with a wealth of experience having made nearly 200 Premier League appearances across spells with the likes of Everton, Bournemouth and Newcastle.

The rest of his career to date has been spent in the Championship, most recently with Watford for whom he played 17 times last season.

A statement from our board of directors reads: “We’re delighted to add a player of Dan’s pedigree to the squad at such an important time.

“We believe his obvious quality and experience will enable him to help the team in the short-term, which is vital given the unfortunate recent loss of Matt Palmer.

“Throughout his career Dan has proven himself to be a hard-working, tenacious and highly accomplished midfielder at the top levels of the game and, equally importantly, he has brilliant leadership skills and a fantastic mentality.

“He is fully aware of the culture we’re developing at the club and is coming here to win games and compete for success.

“We know our supporters will join us in welcoming Dan to the club and supporting him as he adapts quickly to life at Meadow Lane.”

Gosling will wear squad number 32.

Dan Gosling said in an interview after his first training session as a Notts player: I feel really happy, I’ve been obviously waiting, it’s November now, so been waiting a while for for a good opportunity that that really excites me, the club is obviously doing really well this season the stats speak for themselves we heard a lot of good things about the manager from various people um people speak really highly so yeah first training session and lot of information but no it’s been really good

Interviewer: You’ve just had an individual session there with with Luke and his staff um there was a lot of detail, I was watching it I was trying to keep up I’m not sure how you can do that and run around at the same time, but is that something that you’re looking for is that something to to be pushed even at this sort of stage of your career

DG: Yeah I mean look was I was obviously at Watford two and a half years could have stayed there and obviously stayed at home and had a nice season but I wanted to challenge um I wanted to sort of be challenging for for something, look into the future as well so someone I can learn off and uh this manager ticks all the boxes, the club’s obviously had a great season last year looking to kick on again this year and to be part of something that’s that’s winning and playing good football and a style that I’ve not really had before I mean I’ve had a possession based team in Bournemouth to an extent um but yeah 600/650 passes a game I’ve been looking I’ve not had that before so yeah um I’m really looking forward to playing

Interviewer: When you look around players like David McGoldrick, John Bostock, players who I’m sure probably come up against several times in your career does that sort of emphasise the project that’s building here at knots when players like that not only come here but they also thrive here

DG: Yeah I think it helps um looking at sort of the squad and how well they’ve done and they’ve added um it means progression for the club um they want to go higher and uh yes it’s a big club, big fan base and um yeah I’m really eager to to get out on the county ground and and start playing some football

Interviewer: Two month deal, clearly you’re going to want to get out on that pitch and play some football, how fit are you, what have you been able to do sort of over the season so far without being contracted to a club

DG: Yeah look I had a bad injury last year um so last November, so it’s coming up nearly 12 months since since my last competitive game, preseason I’ve done pre-season at Watford, then with the under 21s there for a period of time then went into Wycombe just to get some first team environment under my belt and yeah now it’s just about playing games, probably ease me in and then yeah hopefully get I don’t know eight/nine games till January, see if uh it’s working for both parties and yeah we’ll look the situation in January

Interviewer: You trained with your teammates for the first time today, I know it was only a short session but generally did you get much of an impression of the quality and the style of play was it was it evident

DG: Yeah I mean it was a tactical walk through really for the game tomorrow but yeah there’s been two meetings today um and a lot of detail in the tactical walk walk through in and out possession so yeah I’ve got a feel for it already obviously had my individual bits as well and yeah it’s a lot of a lot of information going in but yeah I want to be a sponge here um it’s going to be a great learning curve for me

Interviewer: Just finally your career has been spent in its entirety in the Premier League and in the Championship was there anything in the back of your mind about so-called dropping down to a level like this or is what you were saying earlier sort of alluding to the fact that you look into the future and also wanting to just be part of a philosophy is that the driving force behind this move?

DG: Yeah part of that I mean, did I envisage going to League Two if I’m honest, no. But here I am and I’m going to embrace the challenge really looking forward to it really excited about the challenge um and to work with the manager as well and his coaching team I’ve heard a lot about so I couldn’t have picked a better place I’m really happy.
