Coventry urged to ban abusive fans as police investigate tweets after Sheff Wed defeat

Coventry City are being urged to ban a number of abusive fans as police investigate tweets after defeat to Sheff Wed.

Twitter user @tommyuto came across a number of posts uploaded online after Coventry’s game with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

He wrote: “Silence is absolutely deafening from @Coventry_City and @CoventryPolice. 5 separate people have posted racist and vile tweets.”

To which Coventry City FC Police (@CCFC_WMP) have said: “Tom it’s been reported to us now through the appropriate channels, which isn’t X and will be duly recorded and investigated. Cheers, Stu.”

One Twitter troll has since taken down his account after a huge amount of backlash to his tweet calling Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, a “Nazi c***”.

This is how Twitter users reacted with Coventry City urged to ban abusive fans as police investigate tweets after the Sky Blues’ defeat to Sheff Wed…

@Rnbolsy13: Put the sniff down Todd, you’ve already made yourself look like a twat. Give X a miss for today and get ready for the backlash.

@PwGiggsy: Consistency is what’s needed, no place for this in the game from any set of fans. Weds had it last week and dealt with it swiftly. Why is this tweet any different? Why have they not been investigated, what have @Coventry_City not made a statement saying they do not tolerate this?

@owlsfan4eva: @WMPolice get this idiot arrested

@Run4Owls: Section 5 of the Public Order act 1986. Go and read up big man 🙄

@wawaw2024: Your first comment is inflammatory and not accepted in this world. Your second comment is racist, hope you enjoyed getting beat by Wednesday at your last game you racist.

@MarcWilcox13: Honestly I’m speechless. He’s tweeted that thinking there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s no hope.

@Jamieswfcx: @Coventry_City do u rlly allow people like this in your club??

@nanjayman: Talking about Nazis and nonces, seems like a nice bloke!!!

@mattthechef19: Another cov fan here mate! I am so sorry for that absolute idiot!!! He does not represent us a club base. I hope you are ok! Congrats on the win by the way take care

@JordanF_CCFC: You’re joking 🤦🏻‍♂️ hopefully they get the rightful punishment. Utter clowns

@DatoKhan1: Disgusting behaviour that needs to be dealt with by their club and the police? Why the silence all of a sudden? Is this racism different because it’s against Wednesday? Pull your finger out Coventry City and sort these racists out!

@Wawaw2002: It’s crazy. If this was Wednesday it would be everywhere. I mean it literally IS racism I don’t get why it’s not being punished

Djeidi Gassama and Shea Charles earned a comeback win for the Owls after Jack Rudoni’s 26th minute opener for the hosts.

It was a much needed win for Sheffield Wednesday, lifting them to 15th in the Championship table with 11 points from 9 games played, while Coventry are down to 20th with 8 points.

Rohl said, per the club website: “I think it was a tough week for us.

“To beat West Brom at home, then travel to Bristol in midweek, then to come here after two days of recovery to a strong opponent.

“But if you look at what we invested in this game, with the chances we created, it was a fantastic week.

“I must say, it was a great performance from the whole squad and not just the players who started.

“Today was the next small step and this is the way I want to see, but of course, we have to improve.”

Rohl, per Sky Sports: “It was a good week but I know in football it goes so quick. I think after Luton some guys around the club were asking about my person and today we deserved seven points from one week.

“It’s a tough, tough week. Against West Brom, go to Bristol, 48 hours to come to Coventry. I think Coventry in the last season was always a tough place, we didn’t get one point, just one draw in the cup there.

“Today I must say we invested a lot, we played with good intensity even with just 48 hours. We made five changes in the starting XI, especially with this position where we have run a lot.

“Great team performance, another small step in our journey, not more, and we still have to improve in lots of parts and this is the job in the next two weeks besides recovering.

“I said to the players in the morning in the last meeting that I have an idea how we want to start. I have an idea how we come through and how we finish the game. In football you can plan a lot but my players deserve all the credit today.”

Coventry’s Mark Robins, as per Sky Sports: “The fact we didn’t start quickly enough was really disappointing because we needed to make the most of the fact that they played 24 hours later than us.

“We didn’t do that, we let them off the hook. They made six or seven changes but that doesn’t matter.

“If you just look to match the opponent in terms of what they are doing, it’s not going to be good enough.

“You’ve got to try and blow teams out of the water and you’ve got to try and set a pace they can’t live with and put them on the back foot, and we didn’t do that.”

Jack Rudoni said, per Coventry Telegraph: “It is a hard one to take. Looking at the game you would think that there would be either a Coventry win or a draw. It is a lack of concentration, a lack of defensive concentration that has let us down and that really cannot happen. Everyone in the dressing room knows that.

“We had chances but, in that position, you have to either win or take the point, you cannot end up losing in that position, it is criminal.

“We are devastated with the result as well, but there is not a lot more we can do other than get ready for the next game over the next two weeks. We are disappointed but we are going to have to find a way to start winning.”

On the huge difference between last the 3-0 win over Blackburn and Saturday’s lacklustre display, he added: “We needed more energy. The energy we had on Tuesday night was top drawer but we need more energy and confidence to play. I do not know if confidence is the right word, but we need to just play our stuff. We can do it.

“We played some good stuff and got into good areas, we had a couple chances, but we need to be more clinical in both boxes. We need to stay in charge of these games and score our chances and keep our concentration when we are defending. Easier to just say that but it is something we need to sort out.

“We have to regroup, get together and sort it out. We have to prepare as good as we can for the next game, it is a big game away at Preston. We need these two weeks to look at ourselves and how we can do better, make sure we come back with a bang and get some points on the board.”
