Controversy with Bristol Rovers ‘set to sign’ player on trial for alleged assault on woman

There was controversy over the weekend with Bristol Rovers ‘set to sign’ player Jevani Brown who is on trial for alleged assault on a woman.

The League One outfit are reportedly closing in on signing the 28 year old on a free transfer, after he was released by Exeter last season.

Brown, who will stand trial in July for allegedly assaulting a woman, was named Exeter’s Player of the Year but hasn’t made an appearance for them after he was arrested back at the beginning of February though remained training with his fellow squad.

The footballer has admitted one charge of assaulting a female, but pleaded not guilty to a second count regarding a different female and will appear before Exeter Magistrates Court on the 7th of July. See more on that HERE.

Exeter suspended him in that month, having scored 12 goals and added nine assists, but since then, Bristol Rovers have expressed interest and after meeting with club officials, Football Insider report he has agreed personal terms.

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell said in May, after Brown’s release was confirmed, that the club could attempt at re-signing him depending on the outcome of his legal issues, saying on BBC Radio Devon: “As a footballer he’s a fantastic player and he’s contributed a lot to this club this season. But obviously his off-field problems have stopped him playing for the second half of the season, so we need to see how that develops.”

Another team Brown had been linked with was Rotherham, however manager Matt Taylor, said via Rotherham Advertiser in June that he was also holding out to see how off-field events would play out.

BRISTOL ROVERS STATEMENT:

Bristol Rovers have signed Jevani Brown following his release by Exeter City.

28-year-old Brown joins Rovers on a two-year-deal, with the option of a third, and will wear the number 20 shirt.

The forward, who was born in Letchworth, began his career at Peterborough United, before spells at the likes of Colchester and Cambridge, as well as a spell on loan at Forest Green Rovers, where he linked up with current player-of-the-year Aaron Collins.

Brown scored 14 goals in 32 games for Exeter in League One last season and has a total of 75 goals in his career. He scored once and created two more in the league games against Rovers last campaign.

Rovers’ boss Joey Barton said: “Jevani is an exciting talent. He can operate across the midfield and forward areas and will bring another dimension to our team. I am looking forward to welcoming him into our group and seeing him in action for the club.”

As mentioned, there is controversy with Bristol Rovers ‘set to sign’ the player currently on trial for alleged assault on a woman…

@Elmhart: Controversial. Great player, but quite a lot of baggage there. Hope all the off field stuff doesn’t upet the apple cart.

@Jacob95___: Not sure about this one, chief!

@Gasperoni27: Not sure what to make of this one to be honest.

@OneRoversVlogs: Jevani Brown is an absolute baller but the fact he’s on trial for assaulting a women doesn’t sit right.

@Ryann_BRFC_95: Don’t get me wrong, quality player and all that but gonna be difficult for the fanbase to get onside with him. I assume Joey’s considered that given the rep he came in with as well.

@FPLGas76: Not sure how I feel about this one. He’s no doubt a great signing for this level. But it’s the baggage he might bring. 🤷‍♂️

@Hxrry11_: good player but not sure about this un

@DiscoStu442: Doesn’t seem wise to me.

@brfc_jv: he’s an absolute baller but is it worth becoming the most hated team in league 1 😭

@Rob_B29: Tell him to fuck off and not bother coming up.

@darrell_ben: We’re gonna become the most hated team in the league but I’m all for it. On football terms he’s one of the best players in league 1 😂😂

@WillDanielsRUFC: Bullet dodged, it would seem. #rufc

@katt_j83: Properly disgusting behaviour. My thoughts about Joey Barton are well known, but even if you don’t agree with that, Brown plead guilty to an assault less than 6 months ago and has another trial coming up soon. Sends a pretty loud message from the club this…

@HarvMarksy: So so so so very Barton. If I speak.

@BRFCWill: What’s the point in football if it doesn’t feel right to celebrate a goal

@willtaylor35: Controversial signing to say the least…

@tomhwilliams23: I don’t care how good a player is, if they are on trial for assaulting a woman you shouldn’t be interested in signing them. This isn’t only aimed at Brown btw – and of course for the latest accusations he deserves a trial (although he has admitted previous allegations)

@HancockAnalysis: We’re all thinking it, I’m not gonna say it, but yeah. Christ.

@elliotbrfc: Jesus fucking christ Joey

@sfry0804: I’m 50/50 with this. Amazing player, but what he’s going to court for is hard to ignore

@Ben_H90: Staying away from Rovers twitter for a while

@dharris2077: The gift that keeps on giving 😂😂😂 whatta club

@RobGWarren4: Her Game Too partner & founder club with women abusers in the dugout & up top? 😮‍💨

@ElliotLane11: Really don’t know how to feel about this
