Controversial decisions from officials as Notts County win 4-1 against Grimsby

We saw controversial decisions from officials as Notts County win 4-1 against Grimsby in a rare Thursday night League Two fixture.

Dan Crowley scored twice while goals from Alassana Jatta and Jodi Jones helped give Stuart Maynard’s Magpies side a thumping victory at Meadow Lane.

Questions though were raised over an offside call and handball for Notts County’s two goals inside the first 20 minutes against Grimsby. Take a look at the clips below, plus the post-match reaction…

Notts County XI: Bass; Bedeau, Platt, Macari; Tsaroulla (Austin 68′), Jones; Robertson (Hinchy 25′), Crowley; Edwards (Scott 76′), Grant (Palmer 68′); Jatta (McGoldrick 68′)

Subs not used: Slocombe, Chicksen

Grimsby XI: Wright, Cass, Rodgers, McJannet, Khouri, McEachran (Hume, 62), Green, Davies (Ainley, 12), Barrington (Svanthorsson, 57), Wilson (Rose, 62), Vernam

Subs not used: Eastwood, Warren, Gardner

ATTENDANCE: 10,046 (257)

“We knew we had a gameplan and, all credit to the lads, the execution of it was incredible,” Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham.

“We were super-brave, when we got through their first line of the press we drove through them and we knew we couldn’t turn back into them because they’d go man for man.

“But we wanted to give the fans a real performance and the lads delivered that.”

Maynard added that Crowley’s performance was “flawless”.

“When we came in we said we can’t be predictable – we’ve got to have a plan for each game – a lot of the time it’s to control the game with the ball,” Maynard said.

“You have to set the team up to control it as best as we can to make sure the outcome comes our way.

“We need to be consistent with it.

“We just can’t turn up and do it in one game here and there.

“It’s a marathon in this league and we’ve got to make sure we’re up for the fight.

“This is what it takes. It can’t be a one-off. It’s going to take everyone in the squad – one to 20 – all in it together. Different games will need different personnel.

“We’re not always going to be flawless. We’re going to have bumps in the road but we just need to make sure we stick together.

“The fans have been incredible and the players can’t wait for the next game.”

Speaking to the media following the loss, David Artell said: “I thought we were our own worst enemies. We didn’t get to grips with the best man on the pitch Dan Crowley.

“Obviously it doesn’t help when he shoots and it deflects and goes into the opposite corner when it would be a routine save or he ends up being a Harlem Globetrotter in our box and the referee doesn’t spot it.

“At the same time, we didn’t track his run or get close enough to block the shot entirely. So yeah, we were our own worst enemy but also on the end of a fairly hefty dose of bad refereeing and bad luck.”

On the fans: “I appreciate it’s not the furthest away trip, but to take 1,300, 1,400 on a Thursday night when it’s thrown on you a few weeks away.

“It’s tremendous. It was tremendous at Fleetwood Town. We’ve got to get an away win for them more than anything because they deserve it.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted to the controversial decisions from officials as Notts County win 4-1 against Grimsby…

@2FPLGurus: VAR isn’t always so bad when you see goals like this!

@cj11tt: your commentators are embarrassing, just talking about how ‘difficult’ it is for the officials – there’s no excuse for allowing two goals which shouldn’t have stood and your pundits should be confident enough to call them out for their incompetence

@MikeyMcMahon: What questions? Seriously? It’s offside and Crowley caught it…. 😂

@x_clarky_x: No. But this is no worse than the standards of officiating week in week out for all L2 teams. It’s dire.

@iandack: As a Notts fan that’s a couple of really dodgy decisions. We see them all the time but they went in our favour this time for once. Refereeing standards are very poor in this league.

@PeterDNaylor: First one was clearly offside on the replay.

@lpatz80: Hope the officials are stood down for the weekend and made to watch their errors on repeat.

@Jackcoupland29: Fuming with the officiating on both, but it’s also crap defending by us on both.

@warbybck7: No way he got away with that 😭😭 what are the referees doing in that league

@cj11tt: yeah they got lucky in the first half via some dreadful officiating but that second half performance was absolutely woeful – midfield completely bypassed, no plan b and the players looked like they couldn’t be bothered. 1400 away fans deserve better than that

@memumwicket: absolutely horrible, no luck with officials but we also didnt do ourselves any favours

@ledwidgejack1: #gtfc How is anyone blaming Artell? When The ref and Lino are allowing the notts players to run a few yards offside, two handed pluck the ball out of the sky and then commit common assault in the penalty area what can he do if the ref does his job and we score the pen it’s 2-2.

@ArtellCartel: Slept on it.. Played two teams down from L1 and a promotion favoured NC. Only one poor performance heavily impacted by injury and officiating. Current squad at full fitness, playing this style, we’ll be too good for 40% of this league. Any additional arrivals are bonus #gtfc

@jdgsport: Grimsby getting stiffed live on Sky. This extra EFL coverage may expose a few issues this season.

@TomDearlove1:
Whoever were the officials yesterday
You can come back to Meadow Lane at any time 😁

@Ladden19: Cracking decisions them

@archiebunkerUK: Just the sort of officials and decisions L2 fans have to put up with every week. Whoever writes apologies for the PGMOL will be getting writers cramp

@RikStennett10: Give me a 3pm kick off on a Saturday…. I’d of been there, along with an extra 1000 or so. Instead I’m sat listening to ‘pundits’ that clearly know nothing about Grimsby and the team.
EFL refs… can’t even say I’m surprised they’ve been shocking, happens every week. #gtfc #EFL

@LiamTasker3: Great advert for league 2 refs this is

@x_clarky_x:
And now a penalty for @officialgtfc turned away.
Where on earth did they get this referee?
Division 8 on a Sunday morning!
#UTM #GTFC

@CaseyAdamsLOFC: The standard of officials in the EFL is awful. You go to a handful of games where you come away thinking the ref had a good game. It’s not even about being bias to your team, the standard is just awful

@owen_catley: Standard of refereeing is awful

@gtfcmatt: Only good thing about this sky deal…Officials are dreadful in league 2, hopefully showing it on tele might embarrass the FA/EFL into actually sorting it out. Its literally every week ! #gtfc

@joeleggett_: This happens every week. Only good thing about this Sky Deal is the horrific refereeing taking centre stage

@c21attridge95: If VAR was in play then the answer would be no for both goals, Jatta just ahead so is offside for the first goal & because in the VAR age there’s no clear definition of the handball rule, the ref would’ve been told to disallow Crowley’s goal if we were using the technology…

@HarryAslett1: We wasn’t very good and genuinely thought notts were far superior however the officiating at this level is so frustrating #GTFC
