Colchester’s Samson Tovide sent off after nearly taking Cardiff player’s head off with challenge

Colchester’s Samson Tovide ended up getting sent off after nearly taking a Cardiff player’s head off with a challenge in the Carabao Cup tie.

The 19 year old’s red – which thankfully didn’t cause an injury for Collins – ruined his side’s chances of grabbing a late winner before losing on penalties.

Colchester – who saw their first game of the season at home to Swindon called off due to a waterlogged pitch – travel to Wales on Tuesday night for their Carabao Cup first round tie.

Ben Garner’s men found themselves 2-0 down inside 35 minutes, however got back on level terms nine minutes later thanks to goals from John Akinde and Joe Taylor.

The League Two outfit were giving it all they got until Tovide got sent off for a the head-high challenge on Jamilu Collins, recklessly lifting his foot in the air to try and get on the end of a long ball.

The referee quickly gave Tovide his marching orders, issuing him a straight red card, as players and a medic rushed over.

Colchester held off the strong Cardiff pressure to take the game to penalties, only to llose the shootout as Jayden Fevrier, Junior Tchamadeu and Tom Hopper all missed their spot kicks.

Tovide, who had just signed a new contract at the club, will now be unavailable for the upcoming games against Bradford, AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons.

“The game today was quite good in terms of ball position and creating chances, but we did only score two goals, and we could have had four or five,” Cardiff boss Erol Bulut said. “On the other hand, we gave away two soft goals, and those were down to two individual mistakes.

“For this, we have to work a little bit individually to make sure the opponent does not get past us. We have to work on and correct these individual mistakes.

“Generally, the young guys did quite good. Ollie Tanner was good, Kieron Evans was good, there were debuts for Joel Colwill and Cian Ashford.

“Romaine Sawyers played good minutes after his injury. I was satisfied with how we kept the ball and created passing options, but we have to continue to work on it and get better.”

Colchester head coach Garner said, as per Gazette News: “It’s never nice to lose on penalties.

“That’s on me – we didn’t practise the penalties yesterday (Tuesday) – we were focused on the open play and preparation for the game.

“At this stage of the season, I thought that that was more important for us to focus on those areas, so there’s no blame at all on the players.

“It’s 100 per cent on my shoulders and I’m really proud of them.

“To go toe-to-toe here with a Championship side, to come back from 2-0 down, to see the game out with ten men in the last eight or nine minutes, I’m really, really proud.

“We can take a lot of confidence from that, moving forward.”
