Colchester United go viral with incredible gesture to Ukraine for upcoming match

Colchester United go viral with an incredible gesture to raise money for the citizens of Ukraine at the upcoming match against Forest Green.

In what they are calling ‘A Game For Ukraine’, all tickets will be priced at ยฃ10 with gate receipts donated to helping refugees.

Not only that but the U’s will adorn a special yellow and blue kit for the League Two clash as locals continue to find their nearest donation point to send basic items to aid more than a million Ukrainians who have fleed to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Colchester United’s game against Forest Green Rovers will be used to raise much needed funds to help the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians.

U’s owner and Chairman Robbie Cowling has said: “Iโ€™m sure many of you are feeling devastated by the events in the Ukraine.

The generations in my family that came before me, including my parents, grandparents and great grandparents, fought for the freedom and the peace that I have been fortunate enough to enjoy during my lifetime. The same is likely to be true in many of the families that attend Colchester United games.

I appreciate that there will be some of you who have not been so fortunate and may have come to Colchester to escape regimes where such privileges could not be taken for granted in the way that I have been able to.

All I have been able to do so far is watch the news and marvel at the kindness being shown by those people in the countries that neighbour the Ukraine such as Poland and wonder what can be done to help those refugees that have been forced out of their homes and their normal lives and into a foreign country and an uncertain future.

So to raise funds that can go towards humanitarian aid, Colchester United have decided to do the following:

All tickets for the televised game against Forest Green Rovers on March 21st will be priced at ยฃ10.00 regardless of location or concession, and ALL gate receipts, without any deductions, will be donated towards helping the refugees.

  • Where a ticket has already been purchased, such as a season ticket:
    • If any ticket works out to have cost less than ยฃ10.00, the club will make up the difference.
    • If that tickets works out to have cost more than ยฃ10.00, the club will refund the difference to the ticket holders `Privilege` card.

No one will get a free ticket. For example, both teams are normally provided with a number of complimentary tickets, but for this game I will ask them to pay for any they wish to receive. Where the club is obliged to give a complimentary ticket and canโ€™t persuade the recipient to pay for it, then I will pay for it.

Assuming we can get permission from the EFL, Colchester United will wear a unique yellow and blue kit for this fixture, and these shirts will be auctioned sometime after the game with the money raised going to the same cause.

I hope you can get behind this event, and any other ideas for how the club can do more on that evening will be gratefully received.

Up the U’s

Robbie
