Chester to part company with manager – causes divided reaction with fans

Chester say they are to part company with manager Steve Watson and this causes quite the divided reaction with fans on social media.

He came into the club on the 23rd of December on an initial deal until the end of the season, however there have been no talks on him staying on.

Watson will now leave the Deva Stadium after the three remaining games are played out with the season ending on the 7th of May.

Chester currently sit 17th in the National League North having fallen to a 1-0 defeat at home to York on Tuesday night.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Chester FC can confirm Steve Watson will be leaving his role as manager at the end of the season by mutual agreement.

Following amicable discussions over recent days and after careful consideration, Steve and the Club have agreed this is in the best interest of both parties.

Steve will continue to lead the team until the end of his contract, which expires following our trip to Brackley Town on the final afternoon of the season.

We thank Steve for his contribution, professionalism and the progress he has made over the past five months, and wish him every success in his future career.

The Club can assure supporters we will be seeking to identify and appoint a new manager as swiftly as possible.

According to early rumours on potential replacements, Callum McIntre (who is Runcorn Linnets boss and Chester Academy Head Coach) and Andy Morrison (who was most recently manager of Cymru Premier champions Connah’s Quay Nomads) are being mentioned.

As mentioned, Chester to part company with manager and it causes a divided reaction with fans…

@Robbieclegcfc: Personally, find this statement very, in fact extremely disappointing to hear while on holiday. I thought the appointment along with Steve Mcnulty was a statement of where we want to go with the football club,to lose this calibre of professional people,something is clearly wrong.

@UtkintonBlueCFC: 100% agree Cleggy. I for one am sick to the back teeth of getting an element of encouragement from the club and just like that we are back to square one 😔. This will possibly drive out a few of our decent players now too.

@Matt_ChesterFan: Didn’t do enough tbh. Same record and B&J. Had funds available. Fresh start next season! Just sign up Stephenson 🇯🇲

@BakeCFC: Not surprised and not really bothered to be honest, we have probably dodged a bullet. Could only see his appointment ending in tears and another managerial pay off during next season anyway. We have to move away from the short term thinking and plan properly for the future. The club needs to define what it wants to achieve and how it aims to achieve it. Put a structure in place and build a team that fits with the structure, currently we have been dictated to by a series of managers rather than finding the fit that will work within our limitations.

@Rio_Doherty: Absolutely gutted. Honestly felt that Steve deserved the chance to build his own side, and given he’s shipped out a lot of the deadwood and brought in some great young players he’s done alright. Once again we’re back to square one. Next appointment is absolutely critical for us.

@Pauline04023347: Yes very disappointing news but did we ever feel he really loved our club? Maybe it will be for the best in the long run and those comments coming from York fans have always niggled in the background. Onwards and upwards. We pick ourselves up! #UTS

@PhilSpencerCFC: We don’t have the money to enable him to put a team together that he feels could challenge so I am not surprised he is going, if I am honest I’m not too fussed. I think it’s time we focus on local talent & start building the club up to where we all think we should be so Cal Mac 👍

@_D_Tilla: I’m quite happy with this. Don’t think he had the desire for it, and I can’t get past the five defeats on the bounce. Managers have been sacked for less.

@JSilloth: I liked the guy, and am a bit surprised by this, but he’s hardly pulled up trees since he’s been at the Deva.

@tibbott99: Buxton Bound

@Stephne83: Why does it constantly feel like this club is going backwards. I think he and McNulty would have built a strong team for next season. I feel like we never take any risks and unfortunately will be playing at this level, or worse, forever unless something changes 🙁

@smokyblacon1: What a crap outcome. Just starting to get things together now we are back to square one. Doesn’t bode well for the budget if he wanted out

@lewis_birkett: He’s won about 6 games, guy doesn’t deserve a new deal

@5th_fret: Really gutted to read this. Thought he showed good promise in recent months and the team seemed to be getting stronger. Had hoped that with a good pre-season and good recruitment we’d have high hopes come August. Real test now is in who we appoint

@NathanALinley: Club is going absolutely nowhere with this current model. Huge changes needed if we want to be a league club in the next 10 years.

@nicksonmatt: Disgusting. I know we’re knowhere near anymore but the lack of ambition kills me.

@JayKhfc: Blimey what’s the craic here then

@Alan_Hitchin: Time for Cal and Col

@trickyricky75: Give Calum a go, if we don’t someone else will.

@shaneedge34: Give it Ruscoe as Interim. Kept Prestatyn up 👍

@LewysThelwell: Wants full time football clearly

@lewis_birkett: Keith Curle will do 👍🏻

@AccountioArn: Not that fussed to be honest. Felt he did a 6/10 job at push but hardly worth the fallout this seems to be having. Couldn’t fix the mentality which is the real problem for me. Score-concede immediately, winning-concede in the last minute etc. Time for Calum.

@trickyricky75: Here we go with the long drawn out application process which I’m not a huge fan of. Identify a target and go and get him. Calum for me, surely must be under consideration.

@Anthony_Ankers9: Actually said I thought this would happen to my lad after recent interview he did,seems a shame but obviously not to be,whoever we bring in let’s hope it’s done quickly would be a shame to lose our best players

@tommorrey1: Why can’t we have nice things

@icecream_bob: One thing that’s never changed at #chesterfc / #chestercityfc is the shambles of a board that run it. Always been the same

@TomWilkins2: Probably cause there’s no money an there’s fuck all he can do with what’s there. Grim news that

@Dave91774940: No ambition Chester fc you gave the last management 3 years scared Watson will get us promoted

@cleanjoeCFC: You are taking the fucking piss right

@CorinCFC2: Oh fuck off
