Chester part company with co-managers as pressure gets intense

Chester part company with co-managers and former Salford City bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley as pressure gets intense.

The club fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to lowly Guiseley, leaving Chester in 16th place when it comes to the National League North table.

The co-managers leave having picked up 16 points from 15 games played, 6 points behind those in the playoffs and those above them have many more games in hand making the job tougher.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Chester Football Club can confirm that the club has parted company with co-managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

Having been appointed in May 2018, Anthony and Bernard depart the Deva Stadium after three-and-a-half-years in charge and with our very best wishes.

We want to place on record our appreciation for their significant contribution on and off the field in that time, and for immersing themselves in our unique football club.

The pair arrived following relegation from the National League in 2017/18 and worked tirelessly to rebuild the team while also helping to re-energise our fan base.

They guided the Blues to a 9th place finish in their first campaign, just three points off the National League North play-off places.

In 2019/20 the Blues finished 6th on points-per-game after the season was curtailed and were edged out in a play-off eliminator at Altrincham, and last season sat third in the table before the season was declared null and void in January.

Unfortunately results and performances this season have not met expectations and we feel now is the right time to make a change to give us the best possible chance of improving our league position.

Danny Livesey, who is a UEFA B licenced coach, will take charge of the team for our upcoming fixtures and our collective focus now is on preparing for Saturday’s FA Trophy tie at Curzon Ashton.

The club will provide a further update to supporters in due course.

Fans reacted as Chester part company with their co-managers as the pressure gets intense…

@Dudsey_: Bit rough on Bern and Jonno. Admittedly the club isn’t flying high, but given what the nation is coming off the back of, clubs still experiencing the aftermath and Jonno having had such a rough ride with Covid, it certainly leaves a bad twang in the mouth for me. #goodlucklads

@melissagrundy: Devastated to hear this news. I’ve never been more engaged in 30 plus years than I have with these two guys. @amjonno @BernMorley84 I wish you all the luck in the world going forward. We’re going to miss you. 😢

@Mattwilb_: Gutted its not worked out this season, all the best fellas

@Alex_Jackson58: Top fellas. All the best @BernMorley84 @amjonno

@tommorrey1: Two great blokes off the pitch but ultimately the correct decision

@mattbutlerpsych: Best of luck in future Bern and Jonno, thanks for all you did for the club.

@Daniel_CFC16: Did not expect this, very rash decision. All managers go through bad patches, we’ll live to regret this. All the best @amjonno @BernMorley84

@tonyhenderson73: He’s too busy on Twitter.

@thatmonokid: Well overdue.

@DanWrexham: Now Anthony Johnson can focus on tweeting about Wrexham, twerking for likes from Chester fans

@thomaslees3: Massive massive game Saturday now

@ITKNonLeague: Correct decision. Watching Chester this season has been utterly miserable and depressing. I love them but they have made the team significantly worse. Best decision for all concerned.

@AFCFC87: Gutted it’s gone this way. Two good blokes who got the club and what it’s about and always open with the fans. Best of luck to them @amjonno @BernMorley84

@blacon_blue: God this is sad, but sadly inevitable. Real breath of fresh air at the club over the last few years, so very likeable as people and unnervingly honest. Wish them all the very best of luck.

@RobJeffries: Incredibly wonderful fellas away from football and completely bought in to knowing what the club is about from day 1. I’m sure it was a difficult decision for all involved but I’m sure they will remember their time at Chester for the real positives they had. 👏👏👏

@RyanMcGinty02: Correct decision, going nowhere nut backwards, must have been an expensive one

@morgan_5556: Thanks @amjonno and @BernMorley84. Over the past few seasons you’ve made Chester a lot more enjoyable to watch and brought the players a lot closer to the fans. Best of luck for the future 💙🦭

@PhillippeDuLait: Such a shame that this season has turned out so different to the last two. Enjoyed having them as managers and will remember the positives. I wish them well.
