Chester condemns shocking incident as fan sparks altercation in dressing room

Chester condemns a shocking incident at Worksop Town as a fan sparks an altercation in the away dressing room on Saturday afternoon.

Worksop produced a 2-1 home win over Chester, dominating early, creating multiple chances through Aaron Martin, Lewis Whitham, and Joe Leesley, but Chester held firm despite a few counters.

Chester went ahead in the second half through Connell Rawlinson’s strike from a corner. But Worksop levelled six minutes later with Martin’s volley off a Leesley throw-in, then took the lead on 70 minutes as Martin’s cross was headed in by Luke Waterfall. Chester struck the woodwork, in their comeback bid. Worksop held firm.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Chester Football Club condemns the behaviour of an individual who instigated a serious confrontation at the end of today’s match at Worksop Town.

This individual was verbally abusive before being able to gain access to the tunnel area, where he entered the away changing room, initiating a physical altercation where he had to be restrained by players and staff.

Club officials have been able to identify the individual involved and he will be banned from attending future Chester fixtures.

We acknowledge it has been a disappointing start to the season and as a fan-owned club, we will always defend and respect supporters right to ask questions and criticise.

However, as a club we do not believe vile abuse, personal attacks, and physical threats are warranted under any circumstances, and have a zero-tolerance policy for such behaviour.

Chester boss Calum McIntyre expressed frustration, highlighted poor defending due to personnel issues, including the sale of a key centre half without adequate replacement and a challenging goalkeeper situation.

He adds that the team handled physical challenges well initially but conceded sloppy goals, especially from set pieces, and lacked ruthlessness in attack despite hitting the bar twice.

Calum also noted noted a failure to assert their style, quick concessions after taking the lead, and a deflating post-game incident that compounded difficulties.

Reflecting on the season’s start (Chester sit 15th in the National League North with 7 points from 6 games), he felt frustrated, accountable as manager, but hampered by external factors like a tough fixture list and a playoff hangover, insisting the team isn’t far off and vowing to work hard to improve.

Worksop, in their first season at this level, are up to 8th with 10 points form 6 games played.

Twitter users gave their reaction after Chester condemns the shocking incident at Worksop as a fan sparks an altercation in the dressing room…

@billyboxing2: Not bothering to investigate the issue that drove the fan to go down the tunnel? Allegedly there was verbals and the manager then offered a fan out for a fight, the fan has obliged and gone down the tunnel after him.

@MikeLad671506: Should be arrested never mind a ban

@FCBuxton: Not like your lot to take a defeat badly.

@SDWCFC1: Who ever it is will probably be glad of the ban he’ll now get. It’s not acceptable no, but neither is this level of effort/performance/start to the season. Its completely unacceptable that we have started like this. It’s probably time he has to decide what’s best for himself.

@Russ030695: Ban them for life, no one who goes to work for the club should have to put up with this.

@ShanePinnington: Whatever the result or performance, no manager or player deserves to be subjected to this kind of attack. Good to see the club react quickly to the incident by banning the individual concerned. It’s only a game of football 🤷‍♂️

@DarrenBurling: Shocked by the replies to this incident. Yes today was disappointing. Players coming back into the team after injury. Another new keeper. And still a poor defeat, but whoever the idiot who went to our dressing room was deserves a ban. Feckin idiot.

@ImJustDaveJ: Chester fans are fucking mental. 6 games in and one is charging the changies

@degsyl: Hang on there should be NO other comments on here other than condemnation of the disgraceful actions of this bellend!! End of. By the way Don’t just Ban this tosser get him charged with threatening behaviour FFS!! W ⚓️

@noahp_18: Need some new owners who don’t post shite like this to be used as a scapegoat for a poor performance and the money that goes missing

@Tigertito: Wow we have all been frustrated after losing but this is something else. Suspect it stems not just expecting to win, but a sense of entitlement and grandeur.

@LiamKHFC: Some headloss that 🫣

@NathanALinley: This is completely unacceptable. We’re all frustrated right now but there’s a line in the sand that can’t be crossed. A strong statement by the club and dealt with well. #UTS
