Cheltenham issue statement after racist post shared on club’s own social media

Cheltenham Town issue a statement after a racist post had been shared on the club’s own social media account on Monday night.

The League Two side has claimed that their account was hacked, and also sparked an investigation into how such content ended up on the club’s official channels.

This situation has drawn significant attention on social media, getting over a million views in less than 24 hours of being posted, with users expressing disbelief and demanding accountability.

The club’s response and the ongoing investigation aim to address how this breach came about and say they are to mitigate the impact of the offensive content shared.

The Twitter post referred to a man who had been charged over an alleged attempted murder of a nurse at Royal Oldham Hospital, Manchester.

Rumon Haque, 37, was charged with attempted murder and with possession of a bladed article after the incident in the hospital’s acute medical unit, with a female nurse in her 50s being seriously injured.

Cheltenham retweeted a post from Kevin McKenna, who wrote: “Well knock me down with a feather what a surprise one of the usual suspects.”

Cheltenham have since said after being made aware of the retweet on their Twitter account: “We’re currently investigating a post that was reposted on the Club’s X account earlier this evening.

“Once notified the post was deleted immediately. This did not come from any official source at the Club. We believe our account had been hacked and we’ve since taken the necessary security measures.

“We apologise for any offence caused.”

Twitter users gave their reaction after Cheltenham issue a statement after a racist post was shared on the club’s own social media…

@GiblinTez: Hacked…… you need to take a closer look to who has access. Hackers don’t just post 1 tweet surely 🤔

@CTFC_Fans: This is still mad to me, why say they were hacked? Could have just apologised for a silly mistake and will eb reviewing and handling internally, why make it farcical and pretend everyone is stupid?

@MikeDingDong: How I see it is one of the staff with access to the club’s Twitter account on their phone was scrolling through the timeline and retweeted that post thinking it was their personal account. Club panicked and put out that statement while they figure out what to do

@KLGibbo: The old account was hacked trick… all what happened was someone didn’t switch their accounts. Not a massive deal

@Jampa9:
Hackers 2025 to do list (no particular order):
1. International governments
2. Financial institutions
3. Tech corporations
4. Cheltenham Town FC
5. Crypto providers

@niallmooneyyy: Who’s hacking Cheltenham’s Twitter 😂😂😂

@krisfoster: Had a great first day working as the new Cheltenham Town social media admin, think it’s gone really well

@mason_tweet: You’ll have the alert then, in the email account registered with the twitter address. A login from a new location or device. There isn’t though, is there? Be honest. The chap is lying. 👍 Stuff happens of a brand new device logs in, or a password reset happens. Just FYI

@Hull1904: Don’t really need to investigate it do you, Admin forgot to change accounts, retweeted something and now he’s played the hacked card…..cos all hackers like to take over football clubs accounts just to repost one thing and then dip.

@_kiebolton18_:
“We believe we were hacked.”
If only you could go to
> Settings
> Security and Account Access
> Apps and Sessions
> Your Account Access History
Would be totally helpful if that was possible. Shame it definitely isn’t possible to prove(!)

@Dan_Crawford: Sacked in the morning, admins getting sacked in the morning..

@keelan_____:
AGAHAHA “hacked”
Aka the admins forgot to switch accounts.
Someone’s getting sacked in the morning 👀

@MattBadweather: It’s happened, we haven’t been hacked at all. Whoever is in charge of it needs a a serious talking to but losing their job and witch hunt isn’t necessary. Someone’s fucked up…and we’ve all done that before #ctfc

@Ben_Coldrick: As much as it’s obvious the account hasn’t been hacked, does calls for the admins job really need to happen? Whether you agree with them or not, everyone is allowed your own personal views. Granted it’s happened on the clubs account so internal disciplinary is all that’s needed.
