Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn raging at handing ‘way too easy’ goals to Swindon in 3-2 defeat

Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn was left raging at handing ‘way too easy’ goals to Swindon Town in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The Robins were 3-0 up by the 47th minute, George Cox (30′), Will Wright (34′) and Joel McGregor (47′) all getting on the scoresheet.

Cheltenham sparked an attempt as a comeback, George Miller (63′) and Ethon Archer (78′) netting to make it 3-2, however Swindon held on to pick up all three points.

The result means that Swindon climb to 18th in the League Two table with 11 points from 11 games played while Cheltenham are 21st with 10 points from the same amount of games played.

On 30 minutes, a lovely worked goal saw Swindon ahead, getting the ball down the right-hand side and the delivery was perfect for George who just needed to get a touch on it, to guide it home.

Four minutes alter, a beautiful delivery from George Cox was on a plate for Will Wright to slot home, then after the break, wasting no time from the restart, Danny Butterworth with some technical work down the left and his ball was played into the path of George Cox and after a scramble in the area, Joel McGregor smashed home to put the away side three up.

With under 30 minutes remaining, Cheltenham got one back, a great ball to the back post. It evaded everyone and there was Miller.

After Swindon came close to grabbing a fourth, Payne fizzed cross into the box from the right, went into a crowd of players and rebounded past Barden.

Cheltenham however couldn’t find a leveller.

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Cheltenham’s Michael Flynn said (as transcribed by Swindon Advertiser): “Don’t worry about what has been said in the changing rooms after the game, I am more concerned about our defending as a team because it is nowhere near the required level for professional football.

“[Are you angry with the goals given away?] Angry? You’ve watched it, I am absolutely fuming because we have worked on stopping crosses and dealing with balls into the box for weeks because we have conceded I think ten goals from crosses. You shouldn’t concede that throughout the season and we have conceded it in 11 games.

“I thought we were the better team at first but as soon as the first goal went in, which Swindon didn’t have to do anything for, the heads dropped and a few players went into their shells.

“The second goal, again they didn’t have to do anything for it, was just a ball into the box when players switched off and he gets a free attempt at the back post.

“I know what I do is not what was shown for those goals, it was way too easy and even after the third we tried our best to give them a fourth.

“We gave a Swindon team, who are struggling by the way, a 3-0 advantage away from home, it wasn’t good enough.”

On Joel McGregor: “I thought Joel McGregor was excellent for them, he’s 18 years of age and scores the winner and I think he must have won about 15 headers today.

“That is an 18-year-old with fire in his belly and he is going to go on to have a bright future.”

Swindon boss Mark Kennedy said, per Swindon Advertiser: “That was amazing and I said that it was quite touching for me and all of the players [at the end].

“That was a real moment and I am so pleased for everybody: the players, the staff, and particularly the fans.

“As a head coach, we are in the background saying that we have taken points in seven of our 11 games, that is a magnificent achievement, but unfortunately only two of those have been wins.

“People want to see wins and I was so pleased today that our fans got a win and the players got to share it with them and connect.

“Because it is such a small ground, I thought it was quite an emotional and intimate connection there.
