Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring on 9 minutes following a slow start from Villa, before Marco Asensio levelled the scoreline and swept home the winner late on, Marcus Rashford providing both assists.
The result means that Villa are now one point behind Chelsea in sixth.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery had to say aboutĀ Marcus Rashford’s start since his loan move,Ā speaking to Sky Sports:Ā “[We want to] Support him. Help him. Try to help him to feel comfortable here. Try to help him get confidence with us. Try to use the skill in our tactical idea, try to be demanding with him. He is in this process.
“Of course he played a fantastic 45 minutes. We now want to be consistent.
“Hopefully he is going to be important, like today, but then more and more and more.
“The most important for him is to try to be here with us and be confident and comfortable in a good atmosphere and this is my objective.”
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports:Ā “Of course if we had lost we would be worse [in the table]. Today we started very bad and conceded a goal, second in the duels, were late and slow on the press, not getting the players on the field as we planned.
“Then we progressively got better. Better in the duels, better in the second half overall. In the dressing room before we spoke about being ready for 90 minutes, how we wanted it to go, we wanted the sub players to be ready.
“We played on Wednesday and maybe we were getting tired. Morgan Rogers maybe has a little injury, Tyrone Mings went off, and we needed the subs to have a good impact and they did.
“The last two games we had chances at the end of the match and did not score. Today we had chances at the end and we scored.”
On the January signings making an impact:Ā “We had the neccessity to improve the squad and to have more players to help with our objectives: trying to be in the top seven or eight and trying to compete in the FA Cup and the Champions League. Of course we brought the players in thinking about improving it. Then we have to try and adapt quick, a lot of meetings and getting information on the field.”
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day:Ā “In the last match at home [against Liverpool], we were playing more or less good but it wasn’t enough. We can get points by playing well but also by trying to avoid mistakes.
“Playing Chelsea today was a very good test. We started very badly – conceding the goal and not winning duels. But we were improving and in the second half, I was thinking we could be tired. But we were confident and dominated the match more or less. The players did a fantastic job. That was our plan. We played 90 minutes very consistent and focussed on our game plan. We had chances against Liverpool and Ipswich Town but we didn’t score.
“Chelsea had a very good chance with [Cole] Palmer but then we were getting offensively better and were getting two or three chances to score and we scored in the end. Getting this victory today is very important.
“Energy is very important. We were speaking in the dressing room at half-time we needed to recover energy. On the field, they had to transmit energy and in the second half, they did it. They did everything. The impact players were fantastic.”
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking aboutĀ his new signings:Ā “This was the objective when we signed those players in the window – trying to improve our squad with the quality and skill these players have and how they can adapt with us quick.
“I think today and in the last matches as well, they are getting to the level we want. They have the experiences at the highest level. Be it Marcus [Rashford], Donyell [Malen] who played in the Champions League final and [Marco] Asensio. Lamare Bogarde was very good today and Andres Garcia also played 20 minute and was feeling very comfortable.”
On Asensio:Ā “He is a number 10. He can get the tempo we need. He can get assists and also score goals as he did today. I need that.”
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to Sky Sports:Ā “I think the performance and the reaction from the last game was vry good. Today was a tough one because we did not deserve [to lose]. Even after the 1-1 we had chances to score.
“We had some great chances and in this league you have to be clinical otherwise until the end anything can happen.”
On the attack without Nicolas Jackson:Ā “I think in the last two games we struggled to get in behind, so we tried Pedro [Neto] there in the nine and I think it worked quite well.
“I think the team was good, they gave everything, the performance was good but unfortunately we lost and we are not happy. If we continue in the same way that we have been today then we can play an important part [in the table] until the end.”
On losing control of the game:Ā “I think it is the dynamic of the game. There are moments you are more in control and you create chances, and then there are moments they do the same. You have to manage both. This is why we have said many times that the difference is inside both boxes.”
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to Sky Sports aboutĀ Filip Jorgensen’s mistake:Ā “The keeper position is very difficult. When you make a mistake is is clear for everyone. Today Filip did a mistake but in this moment he is our keeper and we need to stick together. [A problem position?] No, because in some games both have been brilliant, but as I said when you make a mistake it is clear to everybody.”
On Cole Palmer:Ā “Cole is a top player. Top players always want to win and play an important part but today he could not. He has some great chances that he missed but nothing changes. We are very happy with him.
“We expect exactly what he can give us but I said many times we cannot rely on him for every game, We need all the team. Today was good but unfortunately we lost. We hate to lose but this is a bad moment.”
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Match of the Day:Ā “It is a tough one. Because compared to the game against Brighton, the performance and reaction were good. At the moment, we are in a bad run. But we need to stick together and try to win games. I have a feeling we will go again if we win a game. Until that, we need to work hard and try to get the win as soon as possible.
“We created many chances. Last two games, we struggled with that and lacked a threat. Today, Pedro [Neto] played really well and we tried with him during the week. It works well with him. But we did not win and we have to be upset.”
On where they lost the game:Ā “If you are not clinical, this league is always open – if you make a mistake, like we did in the second goal unfortunately. When we have the chance, we have to take that.”
“Once again today, we showed we can be good for long parts of the game. But that’s not enough. The performance has to be complete. We need to score goals when we have the chance and defend well, but I thought we defended well today. It is a moment were we were also a bit unlucky.”
On the goalkeeping situation:Ā “I am always concerned, even when we were winning games, I was concerned. Now for sure. The problem with that with goalkeepers, it is a delicate position and when they make a mistake, everyone can see. Unfortunately today, our goalkeeper [Filip Jorgensen] made a mistake. This is a moment we need to support each other and try to stay strong.”
Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans speaking to BBC Match of the Day:Ā “You could see in the end the atmosphere was amazing. Us coming back into the game made it more special. We fought really well until the end and it was really important to get that win.
“We had a bit of a slow start. But we grew into the game. We had a few chances in the second half. We didn’t threaten enough in the first, but were much, much better in the second. We nullified their threat. They had a few chances but we were there to win the balls and win the game.”
On Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford:Ā “You could tell tonight that they have a lot of quality. They are very hungry and they want to help the team. That is what we want from them.”
