Chelmsford v Dagenham match briefly stopped after troubling scenes in the stands

The Chelmsford v Dagenham match had to be briefly stopped after troubling scenes took place in the stands on Monday night.

Chelmsford City chairman Spencer Gore said to BBC Essex Sport: “Bit unpleasant at one point tonight with some trouble from the Dagenham fans.

“We apologise for that, there’s nothing we could have done really ah but it’s not nice to see so I hope that doesn’t put any of the fans off.

“I hope the result doesn’t put any of the fans off. We are trying to do things right, we’re trying to build a long-term sustainable future for the club and it won’t happen overnight.

“There’s going to be some ups and downs. Tonight was definitely a down but hopefully there’ll be a lot more ups to come.”

The Daggers went ahead on 17 minutes thanks to Stan Leech before Jason Adigun got one against his former side to level on the verge of half time.

Harvey Broad puts the visitors back in front on 64 minutes, with Dylan Stephenson grabbing a late goal, then the Clarets conceded their second goal in stoppage time.

Ahead of all the other games on the 30th, Dagenham sit 11th in the National League South table with 33 points from 24 games played, 3 points from the playoffs places, while Chelmsford are 13th with 33 points from 23 games played.

Dagenham boss Lee Bradbury said: “Really pleased because obviously made quite a lot of changes to freshen things up. They didn’t understandably because they won their last game 4-0, but I just felt that we should have the physical edge in the game.

“It was a tight game. At half time, we said stay in the game, I think the subs made a really good impact for us coming off the bench.

“The pleasing thing was that I’ve been saying to lads, the whole squad’s going to be needed throughout the season and and that just goes to show tonight.

“You know, four or five changes in the starting lineup, we come here and get a result. Lads come off the bench make a big difference and everyone played their part tonight.

“Really proud of lads tonight and I think that’s the overriding feeling is is pride really.”

Here’s how fans reacted with the Chelmsford v Dagenham match briefly stopped after troubling scenes in the stands…

@rkpdagger: @SJGore @BBCEssexSport hmmm looks to me like the @Dag_RedFC fans are still in their area and it’s Chelmsford fans that have walked around to instigate the trouble. Will the bbc be submitting a redaction to the interview released last night as it is a blatant lie?

@BDellerrr: That’s exactly what happened, Chelmsford from what I saw got through their barriers, it wasn’t actually Daggers that sparked it. Was completely unaware about that interview

@daggersforlife: Only went over there to film and almost got hit by a bin and a metal rod

@JDeany02: Dagenham fans sing ‘chelmsfords a shithole’, we sing ‘you’d rather live here’, daggers fans kick down the barrier and try to kill people with bins

@ianmckee58: Honestly this was crazy, flares, bins, bottles, beer cups, prob some vapes, going back and forth over minimum wage security lads who along with some unsecured security fencing actually managed to hold both sets of fans apart before the police finally arrived

@tompearmantalks: the stewards were A) clearly not well staffed and prepared for the amount of fans and B) underestimating that a local game could spark trouble. fans from both teams let sides down massively and you gotta feel for those stewards man. made for good viewing and fired the game up tho

@WelshCanary94: Whatever happened, I’m sure the stewards only inflamed the situation and are partly to blame.

@Hwilson00000: The regency security a fucking disgrace couldn’t stop a thing. Sort it out.

@BUCKIEWHU: put them all in the army simple. don’t see them fighting for what’s going on in England.

@gfarr92: This could genuinely cost the club the increase in official capacity. Very poor organisation from the FC and lack of stewarding in that area by @RegencySecurity who are only interested in looking for people vaping & swearing rather than actual disorder which this clearly was.

@CHLMNotEnglish: Regency pathetic again

@hfc_felix: Why wasn’t there police at a big NLS derby game against an ex-EFL side with a known youth reputation in the holiday period?

@WillLaird4: So no police when a club with a reputation for kicking off come to town. We persist with the clowns @RegencySecurity who are more interested in shouting at home fans for walking through the disabled turnstile than doing their jobs. Another great advertisement for the club! 👏👏

@BigDaveWHUFC: El Trashico

@Lockwood13Wayne: First ever visit to your ground came here to watch stan leech play for Dagenham you need to look at the stewarding just under 3 thousand there and u had very little stewards at the away end it was a farce to be honested and I thought with all money Chelmsford have paid awful

@Clarets1938: Yeah terrible stewarding companies have always been hired by us. Hopefully today is the reason that all changes, not remotely for for purpose were they

lukelicence18: I was there very quickly when it broke out between the Chelmsford/ Dagenham End. I was trying to calm our fans down while two Regancy staff were trying to calm the situation and they failed miserably. I even took it upon myself to pick up a metal fence to stop them however Regancy were then more interested in removing it from me then actually trying to help. My nephews behind goal were scared and I stepped in to help but the security staff were absolutely clueless with dealing with the situation so took matters upon myself including a few others (including idiots who I had to tell to move away) I am seeing that this was between various individuals but should not be taken out towards all our fans and I hope they are punished for their behaviour. I am sorry you had to get involved Spencer.

Supercity: I was impressed how Spencer took immediate action and walked over to help calm down and break up the perpetrators, who were throwing bins etc at each other. It’s clear he doesn’t muck about when he needs to take action, which is most likely one of the reasons why he’s been so successful in business. Let’s hope he takes the necessary action to turn the performances around sooner rather than later…

ClaretAdam14: A disastrous evening. Not sure what was more embarrassing, the defending in that second half or the awful stewarding throughout yet again from regency. Dagenham youth moving the segregation barrier, no stewards to pick up the flare up, no police presence and objects thrown between the two sets of supporters. I would say that home fans that stand on the terracing on the athletics centre side in the corner should really be moved. Give the away supporters the whole side. Disaster on and off the pitch this evening. Harrop hasn’t just lost the fan base but he’s also lost the dressing room. Spencer may say he’s committed but it doesn’t mean he’s the right man for the job.
