Ched Evans gives update after developing serious life-changing medical condition

Ched Evans gives an update after he previously revealing that he had been developing a serious life-changing medical condition.

The 34-year-old forward told the Championship outfit two months ago that he would need surgery to fix the problem, saying it was due to “repeated high forces contact” throughout his career.

The club has said that they will monitor him and help him every step of his way, for as long as needed.

The ex-Wales international missed the last two matches with a neck problem and his last appearance for the club was when he scored against Rotherham in a 2-1 win on the 14th of March.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Ched Evans has provided an update on his recovery following his surgery in April 2023.

As was confirmed earlier this year, the striker developed a serious medical condition which faced potentially life-changing consequences, but the 2022/23 Players’ Player of the Year has undergone a successful surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

Ched said: “I’m five weeks post-surgery and the surgery went really well.

“It took three hours. They went in through my throat, they removed some bone and some plates which were compressing my spinal cord, but the surgery went really well.

“I met with the surgeon last week and he was really pleased with how I’m recovering.

“He said once the bone has fused to the cages that my neck will be as strong as ever, which was the best news we could have wished for.

“It also means that I’ll be back next season doing what I love to do: scoring goals and winning games with Preston.

“The early bird season ticket finishes soon so please get yourself down to Deepdale, support the lads and support the team.

“It’s going to be a big season ahead and I hope to see you all there soon. Have a good summer.”

More common in American football and rugby players, the condition requires surgery to address his current symptoms and to prevent any further damage from occurring in the future.

Over the course of the past week, the club have consulted with the country’s leading specialists and are currently working together to finalise arrangements for the surgery.

Pending a successful surgery, the striker – who has scored nine goals this season – will spend an extended period of time doing rehabilitation work.

Specific time frames for a potential return will not be disclosed until the outcome of the surgery is known, but all parties remain hopeful that Ched will be back playing and scoring goals in a PNE shirt in the future.

Manager Ryan Lowe said at the time: “We’ll be there for him every single day, whatever he needs we’ll be there for him and the family.

“It’s been tough for me, the staff and the players because it’s a bit sickening when you get that news in the blink of an eye.

“He’s got a strong family behind him who will make sure he’s right. Once he’s had the surgery we’ll hopefully see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel because having the surgery doesn’t mean that’s him done.

“He’ll have to decide what he wants to do with his future and whatever he chooses to do we’ll back 100%.”
