Charlton Athletic confirm the appointment of a new manager in Nigel Adkins it has been revealed after Lee Bowyer left for Birmingham.
In a flash Nigel Adkins went from a 25/1 outsider to the hot 1/3 favourite for the job at the League One club, which opened on Monday.
The experienced boss has been without a job as manager since parting company with Hull City at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.
He steadied the ship with the Tigers and they finished 13th in the Championship table during his full season at the KCOM.
Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce Nigel Adkins as the club’s Manager.

CLUB STATEMENT:
Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the appointment of Nigel Adkins as the club’s Manager.
Adkins has signed a two-and-half-year contract with the Addicks and is set to take his first training session with his new team on Thursday morning.
Owner Thomas Sandgaard was very pleased to make Adkins his first managerial appointment of the first team after taking over the club in September. He said: “I believe Nigel is the perfect personality, with the perfect background and the perfect experience to get us to where we want to be. Both Nigel and I want us to playing football in the Premier League and I can’t wait to see us there.”
Adkins took Southampton from League One to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions in between 2010 and 2012. Sandgaard explained that Adkins’ track record was important but that he was also impressed by the fact his sides play attractive football and that he has a proven ability to develop young talent.
Adkins explained he is looking forward to getting started at The Valley: “It’s a really exciting opportunity for me – something that has happened very quickly. I’m really pleased to be here and am looking forward to meeting the players and getting started.
“I had a conversation with Thomas and he highlighted where he wants this club to go. It’s an exciting and long-term vision. Getting to the Premier League is something that we all want and something that I have done before. I want to achieve that again.
“The team got a great result on Tuesday night and now we need to keep driving on together, because we have got a chance of winning promotion this season.”
As well as the promotions with Southampton, the 56-year-old was also twice promoted from League One with Scunthorpe United and most recently had a successful spell at Hull City, saving them from relegation in 2018 and then helping them to a mid-table Championship position in 2018/19.
Sandgaard added: “What I am doing with all the building blocks I am putting in place is slowly increasing the probability that we will win games. The rest of what happens is decided when the whistle is blown and the game starts. Everything I do on the inside, the infrastructure of the club and now with the new manager is to increase the probability that we’ll end up in the Premier League.”
Sandgaard and Adkins will speak to the press at 3pm on Thursday afternoon in the latter’s first press conference in charge at the club. The press conference will be available to watch shortly afterwards on Charlton TV’s Valley Pass.

Fans reacted as Charlton Athletic confirm the appointment of their new manager…
@harrypierpoint5: Nice one nige
@Maccn5: No No No No… awful appointment, complete lack of ambition. Roddy out! So disappointed in Thomas for this mess.
@cassidyai2: Welcome @TheNigelAdkins work your magic!
@WhyTwoJamie: May not be people’s first choice, but I’m happy with it. Adkins has had a successful career at this level, he has a positive attitude which is completely different to Bows, he likes his sides to play attacking football, and gives youth players a chance. Sounds good to me.
@ValleyFloydFred: Welcome Nigel. Do what you did with Southampton please
@MichaelNourse2: Gonna fully back him but still won’t forget how disrespectful he has been to us in the past. Going to take a lot for me to like the geezer. Main thing for me is that Jacko is staying. #cafc
@GEWP_er: Speaks really well, good luck to him!
@AllHailTheHen: Fuck me some of our fans are hilarious. Not sure who some of you realistically expected to get. Maybe Pep gets bored at City eh? Guy knows he way around and out of this division, is known to be positive and bring through youth. Get behind him FFS!
@PGaiska: 4 promotions on his CV and did an impressive job at Hull. Not a bad appointment at all especially considering Jacko continues as assistant
@Jackosaysrelax: How wildly underwhelming that is. But at least its external and ill back him for sure do what you did with Southampton.
@DylanFowler2003: A lot of you Charlton fans seem to be having the same feelings as what Hull fans had when we had first appointed him, I think you’ll be surprised. What a man!
@powelldavid9: Good Luck Nigel, do what u did at Southampton and we will love ya
@Dan_Crawford: Initially underwhelmed with this appointment, and he’s not been in the game since Hull.. however, the guy made Southampton an unplayable team with attacking football. Hopefully he can bring this to The Valley and we have some exciting times ahead! Plus we’ve kept Jacko #cafc
@ash_rob1: Get behind the man knows his way around league one
@Saintmick66: Congratulations @TheNigelAdkins on your appointment. @CAFCofficial you’ve got yourself a great manager and top bloke. Good luck.
@4ndytucker: God, give the guy a chance. He is not my first choice, but putting things in perspective, a few year sago we would have been happy to have him in charge. Let’s all not forget the crap managers we had under Roland.
@MartCAFC45: Can’t be disappointed with that . Excellent record at this level and a great surname #cafc
@kylegoldsmith13: Cannot understand how people are unhappy with this
@rorybennett_: Welcome Nigel! Let’s get behind the man, he’s got the experience we need #cafc
@VizzardConnor: Get behind him, jacko and sandgaard. Good things are coming! You reds
@chrislepkowski: A good appointment. All the best to Nigel – hope it works out for him
@HylandConall: Look lets just see what he does, ofc you have to back your manager espically a new on no matter what
@Reading106: Good luck @TheNigelAdkins. Hope you get the chance you deserve at Charlton.
@BradKemsley: Welcome Nigel. Don’t listen to the negativity from some! They’re never happy.
@zechmix: Love to see it! Welcome to the club 🥳
Give it a rest. Jesus Christ
