However the Chronicle has now reported that Wigan have declined Sunderland’s request to speak to Cook, leaving Latics fans relieved.
Cook has been in charge at his current club since May 2017 who at the time were in a league below the Championship.
His appointment, one a three year deal, came in the same month he had promoted Portsmouth from League Two.
He led Wigan to the League One title during first season in charge and also had an impressive FA Cup run that saw three shocks against top flight clubs West Ham United, Bournemouth and Manchester City.
His side have won two of the last four games as they battle with clubs at the bottom of the Championship table.
They sit 19th and could move six points clear of the relegation zone if they cause a surprise in being Sabri Lamouchi’s Nottingham Forest who sit second.
