Celtic make a dig at Rangers fans’ George Square chaos

Celtic make a dig at rivals Rangers and their rivals fans’ George Square chaos when marking the anniversary of the UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

Today is 18 years to the day that an astonishing 80,000 Hoops supporters packed out the Spanish city for the showdown clash with Porto.

It was Jose Mourinho who ended up winning his first European trophy with the Portuguese giants as Brazilian striker Derlei hit home with a 115th minute goal to win the game 3-2.

It was the first game to use what was the silver goal rule, though that was not required with the goal coming in the second period of extra time.

UEFA described the Celtic fans as the “largest travelling support to have assembled for a single game.”

FIFA and UEFA praised the support for their conduct and awarded the club the Fair Play Award.

As seen above, the Parkhead club’s Twitter paid homage to that support this morning, tweeting: “You can take us anywhere, we won’t let you down.

“80,000 CelticFC supporters travelled to Seville for the UEFA Cup Final 18 years ago today!

“FIFA Fair Play Award for our supporters.”

This comes days after Scottish football continues to recover from the events in Glasgow at the weekend when Rangers’ supporters celebrated the Premiership title lift.

Gers hit out at their own ‘so-called fans’ who ‘besmirched’ the club’s name with the shocking scenes in the city centre where thousands celebrated.

Fighting and violence broke out while police officers were attacked and hit by missiles.

Condemning the scenes that went viral on social media, a statement from the club read: “The achievement by Steven Gerrard and his team has received plaudits from across the football family, including recognition by sports writers, opposition players and managers.

“We are grateful to Scottish Government officials, Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland for the constructive engagement in the lead up to the weekend’s game. We worked closely with the authorities for two weeks before Saturday’s match to ensure a consistency of message.

“Sadly, a small minority of people behaved inappropriately and in a manner not reflective of our support. Some of the scenes were unacceptable and have besmirched the good name of Rangers Football Club. These so called “fans” should reflect upon the values and ethos of our club, and consider the damage this does to the reputation of the club.

“We will continue to engage with authorities as required.”

Meanwhile, Police Scotland say ‘no criminality has been established’ after investigating the video posted on social media.

A Rangers ‘sectarian’ video was probed as police investigate clip of footballers singing after going the full Scottish Premiership season unbeaten.

Gers players were probed by cops over a video apparently showing them using “sectarian language” during their league title win party.

Police confirmed an investigation had been launched into the clip which with some Twitter users saying that it shows squad members chant “f**k the Pope” while singing Sweet Caroline. It seems they haven’t found any issue with it.

Rangers said earlier this week: “It is evident that this video was shared with an adjoining narrative which attempts to discredit our players and the reputation of Rangers Football Club.

“This highlights the dangers of ‘trial by social media’.

“It is deeply concerning that this video has been taken as genuine and has been shared widely, including by some political representatives who should be mindful of their influence and legal processes.

“Our squad is richly diverse. Sectarianism is unacceptable and has no place in our club, which is underlined by our Everyone Anyone campaign.

“We are confident that no criminality took place, we have sought legal advice and look forward to cooperating with Police Scotland.”

Video footage has gone viral on social media

Police Scotland released a statement on Friday which read: “In relation to a video circulating on social media showing Rangers players allegedly using sectarian language on Saturday 15 May, extensive enquiries have been carried out and no criminality has been established.”
