Casemiro ended up getting sent off after strangling Will Hughes in a big melee during Man Utd v Crystal Palace on Saturday.
A melee with half the players on the pitch involved not long into the second half with plenty of decisions for Andre Marriner to make.
The BBC Sport live blog claimed the melee began with Jeffrey Schlupp barging Antony off the pitch and it all kicked off from there.
Schlupp was booked along with Antony, VAR checked whether anybody else should be penalised there. There were a lot of hands in faces among other things.
It found Casemiro had his arms around Will Hughes’ neck, with Andre Marriner going to the screen.
Andre Marriner ran back and called over Casemiro. And he showed him the red card. Casemiro is sent off for choking Will Hughes.
Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 Live: “The level of the refereeing today has been shambolic. For me Casemiro’s not hurt Will Hughes he just kept hold of him to stop him getting involved in my eyes. That is absolutely one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen. That is shocking.”

Manchester United broke the deadlock seven minutes in with Bruno Fernandes converting the penalty with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. That man Marcus Rashford with a right footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal. Assisted by Luke Shaw with a cross.
Crystal Palace got one back shortly after, Jeffrey Schlupp with left footed shot from the centre of the box. Assisted by Cheick Oumar Doucouré following a corner.
James McFadden on Final Score: “Casemiro throttles Will Hughes. You can’t be putting your hands around his neck. Crazy decision from Casemiro, not only in this game but in future games. Violent conduct, he’ll be missing for a number of games. He’s been unbelievable for Man Utd but he is no good to them from the stands.”
OptaJoe: “1 – Casemiro’s dismissal was the first straight red card he’s been shown while playing for a club within the big five European leagues (336 apps for Real Madrid and 30 for Manchester United across all competitions). Orders.”
Ashley Williams (Former Wales captain on Final Score): “It’s a red, Casemiro has two hands around Hughes’ neck. You can’t really argue with it. He wants to back up his mate Antony. It’s a little bit silly from Casemiro. There was a lot going on and he just got carried away. Palace have gone down the other end and scored and now Man United have 15 minutes to play with ten men.”
Man Utd held on for the 2-1 Premier League win despite Palace trying to fight back for an equaliser.
Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 Live: “United have been the better side, Palace lacking in confidence and didn’t make a contest of it. The sending off, which was a very poor decision, changed the game. But United dug in and with the backing of the fans they’ve done it.”
Sky Sports’ Ron Walker at Old Trafford: “That’s as stupid a red, and as clear a dismissal, as you’ll ever see. Casemiro accepted his fate with fairly good grace – he could’ve done with some of that in the initial altercation.”
This is what fans said with Casemiro sent off after strangling Will Hughes in a big melee during Man Utd v Crystal Palace…
@Liam_Aspo: Reckon Casemiro’s ban will be made bigger cos he’s literally strangled Will Hughes 😂
@_Johnny_Ctrl: Casemiro has no business choking will hughes like that 😂😂
@JoshisButler90: Why is Casemiro putting his hands around Will Hughes’ neck, there? Really stupid decision.
@Hambo1980: It’ll make fuck all difference to the score but that had to be a red – otherwise you’re giving the message that players can just strangle each other and take a yellow 😂 #cpfc
@Chrisscore0: Whys he just strangling someone when his teams 2-0 up 💀💀
@Gibbo8: We’ve all wanted to do it @Casemiro mate, fair play
@robbieswain14: Poor Will Hughes nearly died there
@FutballNews_: A clear red card, what was he thinking??
@simplyunitedZA: Will Hughes absolutely shitting himself 😂😂😂
@JoeSillett: Can’t see how Casemiro gets a red card when at least 2 Palace players raised the arms in the same melee. VAR yet again punishing United. Casemiro didn’t strike Hughes. No hit on the player. Not a red card. Andre Marriner then looking for every opportunity to get Palace equaliser.
@Tariq_Razi: @markgoldbridge that’s a Red Card every time. He had both hands around his neck and the rules are very clear about it. It wasn’t meant to hurt but in the heat of the moment he might not have realized the impact especially when caught so clearly on camera.
