Carlos Corberan sent off 6 minutes into West Brom’s defeat to Southampton in front of new owners

Carlos Corberan managed to get sent off just 6 minutes into West Brom’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton in front of new owners.

The Baggies boss had a moment to forget when he received a red card for interfering with play, stepping outside his technical area, and prevented a loose ball from going out of play.

Corberan, 40, thought that Sekou Mara’s pass to Adam Armstrong had already gone out of play, and in an attempt to give the ball to Darnell Furlong, he put out his left leg, prompting referee Sam Allison to immediately show him the red card.

Despite Corberan’s protests of innocence to the referee, he was ultimately sent off to the stands. Take a look at what happened in the video below…

Southampton manager Russell Martin labeled the rule that saw Carlos Corberan sent off as “nonsense” and believes Corberan should have been allowed to carry on his duties as normal.

“It must be the rule that if you touch the ball you get sent off. If that’s the rule, it’s a crazy one,” Martin said in the post-match press conference, per BirminghamWorld. “I didn’t know he was going to get sent off. I have nothing but respect for Carlos, I didn’t want to see him sent off. It’s nonsense,” Martin continued, passionately.

Goals from Ryan Fraser and David Brooks helped the Saints march past the Baggies and up to second ahead of other Championship fixtures taking place over the weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the match, Corberan said he was ‘fully focused’ with Shilen Patel edging closer to a complete takeover.

He said: “It is a positive thing for the club. We are very pleased and looking forward to starting a new moment for the club.

“But in a very demanding period, I am fully focused to prepare for the game because we are playing many games in a row.”

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to the game, Corberan emphasised his complete concentration on the game, as Shilen Patel moves closer to taking over the club.

He said: “It is a positive thing for the club. We are very pleased and looking forward to starting a new moment for the club.

“But in a very demanding period, I am fully focused to prepare for the game because we are playing many games in a row.”

Patel’s acquisition is estimated to be valued at £60 million and will mark the end of Guochuan Lai’s turbulent ownership in the West Midlands.

Lai, who acquired the club for more than £200 million in 2016, had been facing pressure to sell the club due to difficulties in repaying loans.

West Brom had been in search of a new buyer due to escalating financial losses, reportedly borrowing over £20 million from MSD Holdings Limited.

Twitter users reacted at seeing Carlos Corberan sent off 6 minutes into West Brom’s defeat to Southampton in front of new owners…

@andrew17taylor: Bit harsh to send him off

@MFC_Steve: Stinks of a referee trying to make a name for himself like on sky

@alinalmeria: Honestly a booking would have done. It’s not like he was gaining an advantage. All the players thought it was out too and had stopped

@davetrevaskus: You can say it’s harsh all you want, it’s not referees’ job to teach you all the laws of the game you play/watch! You either want them to do the job right, or ignore the laws of the game. You can’t have both.

@thelocalreferee: Mad to see the comments on here blaming the ref. Look up the Laws of the Game. Blame the laws, not the person that enforces them.

@bwoods1989: Rightly so. Laws are laws. Referees don’t write them, they just enforce them. Why did the manager feel the need to even get that close?

@WWFC_SD:
1. The ball went out
2. Even if it didn’t and he knew it didn’t, I respect that lmao

@ped1980: Surely common sense has to prevail here?? I’ve seen coaches do far worse on touchline and just had a talking too, just don’t get it, it’s not like he ran onto the pitch and tackled someone is it….. ridiculous

@GeorgeMorey93: Russell Martin appealing as if he’s two footed someone the tosser.

@JackLUFC1919: Refs need to be able to adapt rules to different contexts. There’s no reason that should be a red, he’s not preventing a dangerous attack or anything, and the balls probably gone out anyway

@SloperBlues: What a shocking decision that is. Yellow card at most 😂😂

@davYidc89: Need this to happen to Arteta then he might stop running up and down the touchline every game like the absolute helmet he is

@riobeare: Another knob who’s been given power

@SimonSteer11: 😂😂 make you laugh! Yellow at best! Not like an opponent was near the ball. You see worse when opponent team keep hold of the ball to slow down play!!!

@leepwolf: I can’t help but just despise Russell Martin, I don’t even have that much of a reason

@NathanRef96: Mad to see how many people blaming the referee saying it’s harsh … That’s the Laws of the game 😂

@leogowing23: How is the ref getting slagged off for doing his job!?

@brfc_reece: I really don’t see what West Brom’s fans Problem about this is. It’s a red good refereeing tbf

@1siharrison: Another example of how people, who do not know the laws of the game, are quick to target people for knowing and correctly applying the laws of the game. Superb

@EwanRCD: It truly is one of the shittest rules. The ref looked embarrassed about it. You do wish that some common sense would come into it
