After securing a loan agreement with Championship leaders Burnley, the 22nd year finally made his long-awaited move from Swansea. The deal gives him the option of making the move permanent in the future.

Obafemi made it clear that he wanted to leave the Welsh side over the last few months, which has clearly strained his relationship.

Burnley’s social media team has made a name for itself with their entertaining and clever signing reveals, as well also know. Obafemi was also given a Gavin & Stacey-inspired video and this also blew up online…

Irish forward becomes fourth signing of January transfer window

Burnley Football Club are delighted to announce the arrival of striker Michael Obafemi on a loan deal until the end of the season with the option to make the move permanent in the summer from Swansea City.

The 22-year-old has spent the last 18 months in South Wales scoring 15 goals across 52 appearances for the Swans.

Dublin-born Obafemi spent time as a youngster at Arsenal, Watford and Leyton Orient before joining Southampton in 2016.

After progressing through the academy with the Saints, the attacker made his first team debut in 2018 and became the Club’s youngest goal scorer at 18-years-old in the Premier League with his strike against Huddersfield Town.

Later that year, Obafemi was called up to the Ireland senior squad after representing the Boys in Green from U19-U23 level and made his debut against Denmark as a substitute in a UEFA Nations League clash. The striker now has seven caps to his name, with two goals for the senior set-up.

Obafemi then made the switch to Swansea in the summer of 2021 after five seasons at Southampton and now becomes Vincent Kompany’s fourth signing of the January transfer window.

After joining on loan, Obafemi said: “I’m glad to be here. It’s been a busy few days, but I am just glad that it’s finally done now.

“When I first heard of Burnley’s interest in the summer I was adamant to come here, obviously it didn’t happen then but now I’m here and I just can’t wait to play in the Claret and Blue.”

This is what social media users said as Burnley announce signing with a brilliant Gavin & Stacey video announcement…

@JPreeceSCFC: Burnley announcement videos have been perfect this month!

They took inspiration via Shrek, using the scene of Lord Farquaad asking the Magic Mirror to suggest three princesses to him to marry.

Burnley’s social media genius team dubbed it up, so Farquaad asks for ‘January signings instead’, with Farquaad told that he should choose between Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lyle Foster.

Farquaad nervously dithers as his henchmen shout out suggestions, leading to Foster being picked, it’s simply superb viewing.

“And last but not least, a super South African from the Belgium Pro League – and at only 22 years old, he has already represented and scored for his national side at both Youth and Senior levels,” the Magic Mirror says. “Yours for the signing… Lyle Foster!”

After choosing Foster over Messi and Ronaldo, the scene ends with Lord Farquaad replying: “He’s perfect”.
