Bukayo Saka and Thomas Tuchel fume as Arsenal and Bayern are controversially denied penalties

Bukayo Saka and Thomas Tuchel fume as Arsenal and Bayern Munich are controversially denied penalties in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw.

In the dying moments of Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Emirates Stadium, Bukayo Saka was brought down by Manuel Neuer inside the penalty area, prompting loud appeals from the home fans.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, who had fought back from 2-1 down to level through substitute Leandro Trossard deep in stoppage time, referee Glenn Nyberg dismissed their pleas and then blew the final whistle, leading to boos from the disappointed home crowd.

“It looked like a penalty to me, it looked like clear contact,” Trossard said on TNT Sports.

Meanwhile, ex-Tottenham player Harry Kane netted a penalty in the first half to put Bayern ahead, but manager Thomas Tuchel revealed after the game that he felt his side should have been awarded a second spot-kick, relating to a bizarre incident in which he felt Gabriel handled the ball after an Arsenal goal-kick had been taken.

“The referee did not have the courage today to give us a deserved penalty, in a bit of a crazy and awkward situation,” Tuchel said.

“What makes us really angry is the explanation on the field. He told our players that it’s a kid’s mistake and he will not give a penalty like this in a quarter-final.”

Arsenal goalscorer Leandro Trossard, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “It looked like a penalty to me, it looked like clear contact. We’re not pleased but when you are 2-1 down at half-time you will take point at the end.

“We started so well. We could have scored two or three goals after taking the lead. You can see what kind of quality Bayern Munich have to hurt us.

“Luckily I helped the team with a goal so I am pleased with that. I always try to do whatever I can on the pitch. Hopefully I can help in the next few weeks. We have such a great team and we know it will be hard over there. If we play at our best level we can beat anyone.”

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “Tough work, tough game against a very strong opponent with a fantastic crowd today. The atmosphere was amazing for the home team.

“We stepped up after 1-0 down, very good reaction. In general a very good team effort. We hit the post.

“I think the referee did not have the courage to give a deserved penalty today in a bit of a crazy and awkward situation. He admitted on the pitch that he saw the situation and that quarter-final is not enough for him to give a penalty. He admitted he saw the mistake the player made.”

What incident are you referring to?Β “It was a goal kick off, the goalkeeper passed to a central defender and one touched the ball with the hand because he thought it was not in game but it was in game and the referee admitted it was in game and was handball. Very frustrating.

“We were relentless and kept on believing and kept fighting. Everything is open now.”

He added: “I think there was a huge mistake in not giving the handball penalty. It’s a crazy situation, but they put the ball down, he whistles, [Raya] gives the ball free and the defender takes it in his hand.

“What makes us really angry is the explanation on the pitch. He told our players it was a kid’s mistake, and he will not give a penalty like this in a Champions League quarter-final.

“It is a horrible, horrible explanation. It means he is judging handballs. Whether it’s a kid’s mistake or an adult’s mistake, we feel angry because it’s a huge decision against us.

“But it’s 2-2, totally even, we have the second leg to play and we hope we can create the same atmosphere, play with the same intensity and passion like today to create the same atmosphere in our stadium and push things in our direction.”

Β

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “Manuel Neuer leaves his leg out. It has to be a penalty. They [VAR] had to send him [referee] to look at it. It’s such a big decision in a game like this. There is so much riding on it.”

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “I find it quite alarming he has not given that penalty.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “The game had different moments. We started really well, we were dominant, didn’t concede anything. We scored a really good goal and after that is the moment of the game when Ben [White] is in front of [Manuel] Neuer and if it was 2-0 it would have been a very different game.

“They scored and it created some uncertainty, the second goal was unusual for us to concede but it is the Champions League, you make a mistake and get punished.

“We allowed them the spaces to run and they were very dangerous but even at 2-1 we tried to make a rhythm, we were composed and didn’t try to rush things and the changes had an impact on the game.

“In the Champions League you give something they will take it. You get punished. That is part of football as well.

“The things we can control is do the simple things better.”

On late penalty shout:Β “They said they checked it and decided it was not a penalty.”

Can you get job done in Munich?Β “I have a lot of belief we can go there and beat them. We have to prepare really well.”

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane, speaking to TNT Sports:Β “It was a tough game. Of course we are never happy when we don’t win. You’ve seen it over the past couple of years, Arsenal have had a good go at trying to win the league and they are top of the league for a reason.”

On his goal from the penalty spot:Β “It was one of them when I have done a bit of research of his games against Porto. it was nice to see him go early and make it easier for me.”

Twitter users gave their reaction with Bukayo Saka and Thomas Tuchel taking to fume as Arsenal and Bayern Munich are controversially denied penalties…

ON SAKA-NEUER INCIDENT:

@geoffwalker80: Never a penalty in a million years. Throws his leg into the keeper. He’s lucky he hasn’t suffered a serious knee injury to himself or the keeper. Well done officials.

@BlainOliver: Should’ve just played the ball tbh had an open net

@markwillow80: That’s a yellow card for Saka all day long. Not sure why he chose that option when he could’ve scored instead.

@Tunni90: No way! Love Saka for England but Arsenal mentality of cheating when for them. He kicks out and leaves his leg out on the keeper. Our shitty Premier league refs would give us but fair play to the Ref πŸ‘

@Maltby29x: Trying to con the ref instead of trying to score is why he will Always be a bitch boy. Just score the goal ya divvy

@rhystakes: Bruv look at how wide his leg is he can easily round him with no contact

@TweetChelseaUK: Saka just kicks him then dives, never a pen

@Jimmy__MUFC: Ref got it spot on

@WiktorSZN: Shameless dive lets be real

@craig_c83: Saka kicks the keeper. Should be a foul the other way if you ignore the horrific dive.

@MrRyanLeister: Excellent officiating, Saka making the contact & not the other way round.

@ThatAnfieldBuzz: No pen, Saka throws his leg up. Same old arsenal, always cheating!

@StevenEB93: Saka left his leg in making g sure there would be contact and wanting a pen when he could have just scored anyways hahahaha he fucked it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ #arsenal #ChampionsLeague

ON HANDBALL INCIDENT:

@GingerPirlo_: Clearest penalty you’ll ever see. There is no interpretation. Clear fact that should be a penalty. Can’t believe VAR hasn’t brought this back. Beggars belief. #ARSBAY

@THFCComps: Factually, Bayern Munich we’re denied the clearest penalty in the history of football tonight yet we are supposed to believe Arsenal were robbed due to one of the most disgusting dives of all time

@Zonal_Marking: Obviously it’s daft from Gabriel, but this is a (fairly rare) example of a situation where a referee can – and did – reasonably apply the β€œcommon sense” that people are usually so desperate for.

@GeezyPeas: Stuff like this happens all the time at free kicks, it’s a minor. Tuchel needs to grow up, along with anyone else who genuinely thinks it should’ve been a penalty. The threshold for a penalty should be high because it’s an almost certain goal.

@TheKopHQ: I never got onto this during the game. But that’s a shocking none decision by the referee. Clearly a Penalty. What was Gabriel thinking, absolutely brain dead. He’s got away with one there, massively.

@BigBearKentlaar: Not to put the idea in people heads – but do we think this is why Saka’s wasn’t given? Referee wanted to even things out? Because it’s certainly a penalty for Bayern Munich.

@innes_neil: Another example of why refs should be interviewed after the game just like the players and managers are…

@bwfc_elliot: It’s a penalty. This is something we see Bolton do regularly, and they scoop the ball up with their hand and throw it to their teammate. Once you kick it from a stationary position it’s in play

@Micks2B: Arsenal absolutely got away with it.. moaning about the Saka dive this is the real bad decision.
